The statement seemed to take him wholly by surprise, and he looked over at the typically silent Lord of House Beneviento. But it wasn’t joy or sorrow that flooded in- it was relief. 

Of all people, he knew she had no reason to lie. And even if he wasn’t sure he could believe it himself, it was a comfort to know someone thought differently. In a quiet voice, almost a sigh, he had only one response.

                    HEAD  CANTS  IN  BEWILDERED  RESPONSE  to  the  reaction  her  words  have  evoked  ,  as  invective  as  it  seems  impassioned  .  while  unexpected  ,  it  is  hardly  surprising  —-  but heartbreaking  just  the  same  .  she  knows  donna  , and  there  is  no  movement  of  hers  that  does  not  betray  her  ,  that  does  not  speak  to  the  self  -  hatred  she  holds  so  deeply  and  dearly  .  a  glance  from  beneath  blackened  veil  ,  a  turn  of  her  head  away  from  conversation  ,  the  flash  of  her  throat  as  her  breath  hitches  ,  and  even  now  as  the  trembling  from  her  shoulders  flows  down  the  rest  of  her  spine  ...  they  are  all  dimitrescu’s  spies  —-  an  invitation  deeper  into  the  dollmaker’s  troubled  mind  .  a  strange  pang  ,  like  the  ache  of  a  phantom  limb  ,  sets  up  beneath  her  ribs  at  the  sight  of  it  .

                    “  I  DO  .  ”  the  words  are  spoken  plainly  ,  her  voice  firm  as  she  finds  it  ,  and  seem  to  leave  no  room  for  refutation  .  “  —-  though  ‘  WRETCHED  ’  and  ‘  broken  ’  seem  quite  the  stretch  .  ”  beyond  that  ,  she  offers  nothing  else  ,  no  honeyed  words  or  grand  gestures  .  she  is  a  proud  woman  ,  but  even  she  is  not  so  foolish  to  think  that  the  words  or  actions  of  a  single  moment  could  change  anything  more  than  the  direction  of  donna’s  thoughts  .
