OEDA (William Ashton Tait) Archives

In 1968 Nancy Tait lost her husband William to mesothelioma, a cancer associated with asbestos exposure. Available information on the disease and how it was contracted did not convince her. Nancy Tait embarked on an extended fact-finding mission that would occupy her for four decades. Along the way she founded the world’s first asbestos action group, the Society for the Prevention of Asbestosis and Industrial Diseases (SPAID). It was later renamed Occupational and Environmental Diseases Association (OEDA).

OEDA’s sprawling archives occupy well over 100 shelf metres. They document how the charity pursued its objectives over thirty years: fairer compensation for victims of industrial injury, improved legislation, better protection for workers, an asbestos-free environment, and a shoulder to lean on for all those afflicted by industrial disease.

But rather than being just an advocacy group or a victims support group, OEDA also aimed to conduct and promote research. That part of its mission centred on how mineral fibres act on the human organism over time. OEDA monitored mesothelioma mortality and death certification procedures and ran its own electron microscope facility, the EMU, which was equipped with the latest technology to detect asbestos fibres. With data from the EMU Nancy Tait advised special medical boards on respiratory diseases, and coroners on the interpretation of asbestos fibres in lung tissue. The instrument was, she stated in 1999, “the only bulwark against [certain medical experts’] efforts to secure verdicts of natural causes or open verdicts”.

The bulk of the archive is OEDA’s memory bank from myriad interactions with medical, environmental and legal experts on occupational and environmental health and safety, with industry representatives, with journalists, politicians, health & safety professionals and campaigners, and with those immediately affected by occupational and environmental disease. The latter alone account for over 50 shelf metres of case files.

When OEDA closed in 2008, it could look back on an astonishing legacy: Nancy Tait and her charity had contributed to the banning of asbestos in 1999, to substantial revisions of the Control of asbestos at work regulations in 2002, and to significant reviews of benefit entitlements for asbestos-related industrial injuries in 2005. And this was only the tip of the iceberg.
