jake walks out of his class—coffee and books in hand—just the same as he always does. he makes his way to the small table in the corner of the courtyard, where he usually sits during his breaks. just as he's about to cross onto the grass, he watches as someone takes his seat. great, now i have to ask if i can sit there. he continues over, phone in hand, just in case i change my mind and decide to run away from confrontation. when he gets there he clears his throat and waits for whoever this seat thief is to look up. when they finally do his eyes widen.
"y/n?"
your eyes mimic his and you begin to consider closing your computer and running from an awkward situation. but before you can make a decision, jake speaks again.
"what are you doing back?"
"well, i was only supposed to be gone for a year."
"right," jake sighs before looking around. "is it okay if i sit with you? it's just that i usually sit here—it's kind of my spot, you know?"
you laugh at his comment, "yeah, you seem to be fond of sharing special spots with people." you thought your mumble was quiet enough to not be heard, but that thought is quickly swept away.
"what do you mean?" jake raised an eyebrow as he put his bag on the seat next to him.
you clear your throat hoping he lets it go, but when you look up and find him looking at you like he's waiting for an answer, you give in. "when i got back," you started, looking at your computer in hope that it would make it seem like you didn't care as much as you really did. "i went for a walk in the park, and i was kind of surprised to see you at our spot with someone else. i guess i shouldn't call it ours anymore, right?"
jake racks his brain trying to figure out when that day could've been. he had gone to that spot almost everyday since you left. just to feel something, is what he would always tell jay and heeseung when they asked why he continued going.
"i don't think i—" he starts but immediately cuts himself off when he remembers. "oh! oh my god, no, wait. i was there because—well, i was there because i always go. i just like to visit it sometimes. and there was this girl who was walking, and she like saw me sitting there just kind of staring at the lake, so i guess she thought i was going through it. which, in all honestly, i was—" he stopped to take a breath, he looked up to see your reaction so far only to find you still looking at your computer. "sorry, i started rambling... anyways, she like sat down with me and just kinda started talking. said her name was.. uh yunjin? something like that. i swear i would never take someone else there. i promised you that. it was a pinky promise too, you know i never break those."
he keeps his eyes on yours, waiting, hoping that you'd look up and meet his gaze. but when you did, he wished he hadn't. your eyes held back tears which you immediately went to wipe away.
"shit, sorry. just didn't really expect that." you laugh trying to lighten up the mood that you'd brought down.
"i missed your laugh." you look up at jake's words and his face turns a dark shade of pink.
"i did not mean to say that out loud, fuck." he hides his face in his hands, pulling another laugh from you. this one, he notices, isn't forced and it makes a smile tug at his face. he looks down at his phone to check the time and sees his next class starts in less than ten minutes. "my class is about to start, i'll see you around, probably?"
"yeah, probably."
it felt as if the two of you became the only people in the world, the chatter of students around you dimming as a silence takes over the space.
"is your number still the same?" jake asks after he gets up and swings his bag onto his shoulder.
"yeah, it is."
"i'll text you then." he smiles and turns to walk away, leaving you with your face feeling fifty times hotter.
a/n: *looks around* turns out senioritis is real.. i thought we were just being silly but no i've never been this stressed in my life 😭 i was finally able to sit down and breathe for a bit today so i decided to write. this au is all planned out, i just haven't had the time to write anything down 😞 hopefully spring break will be my time!!

"i think it's best for us to end things here, for both our sakes." you spoke, holding onto jakes hand.
"so you're not even going to try at least?" silenced followed, and he let go of your hand, picking up his backpack as he stood. "i'll take that as a no." you didn't move as you watched his figure diminish, the back of his blonde hair turning dark as shadow overtook it.
you tugged your tote bag back onto your shoulder as you walked down the sidewalk, shaking your head at the memory that came to you. the park looked the same as the last time you saw it a whole year ago. as you continued down the path you knew like the back of your hand, you looked to watch the golden leaves scatter across the pavement. one year can truly feel like a lifetime, especially when you leave behind so much.
continuing your way you thought of the many moments you shared with the nature around you. picnics with your friends, morning walks, small dates with jake.
jake. at first it felt like a hallucination, maybe thinking about him made you hear his distinguishable laugh in the midst of the trees. you stopped walking and listened once more, and there it was again. you felt your heart drop as you followed the laughter to the same spot jake had proclaimed was going to be for the both of you.
when you finally got close enough to see where the sounds were coming from, you saw jake sitting on the same bench he asked you out on, just with a different girl.
