Archeological dig reveals Abenaki fortress in Quebec
An Abenaki fortress built in 1704 — long buried at the Odanak reserve in Quebec — was recently unearthed.
Since then, thousands of artifacts have been found at the Abenaki reserve, and now the public is invited to help with the archeological search.
It’s part of a month of activities planned by Archéo-Québec to celebrate Archeology Month (August). The digging at Odanak is open to the public until Aug. 15.
Odanak, on the St-François river near Pierreville, Que., is believed to have been built under Louis XIV, King of France from 1643 to 1715 .
It was the only fortress in New France built by French military officers and Abenaki, but totally inhabited by an indigenous population.
Its location was completely unknown until recently. It appeared on a map from 1704 but had not yet been found. Read more.
Leaving the reserve sometimes this morning. I wish I could stay forever.

I FOUND WIFI
Woooo
Its been a long and draining week. I'm glad its Friday tomorrow and then one more week till I go to my family's reserve for powwow with my bestie. I love long car rides and I love Odanak because its so peaceful there!
For some reason every year when the weather gets nice again, I start to crave the atmosphere and community of Odanak (the reserve that my family is from) I've gone to Powwow for at least 6 summers now and it's the thing I look forward to the most every year. I love being around my family and listening to my uncle (Chief of the reserve) tell me stories and legends and I live listening to my aunt teach me about life and how to be a happy healthy person. This year I get to bring my best friend with me and I'm so excited to show her one of my favorite places on earth.
