This sounds wild how did we reach such discourse
it’s essentially all the news that’s coming out of the set photos and cast interviews of series 11 of doctor who. a while back set photos emerged showing a replica of one of the montgomery buses from the montgomery bus boycotts, and obviously people got outraged because HOW could anyone even think it could be a good idea to do an episode of doctor who about rosa parks - people jumping to the assumption that either the plot would be ‘aliens cause racism’ or ‘the doctor solves racism’ which would both be. extremely poor taste. and now it’s just come out that there’s going to be an episode set during the reign of king james i (with james i played by alan cumming!!) and people, literally just hearing that, assumed that it would be about witch trials, and from that assumed that the witches would be aliens, and are now getting upset about the fact that the show could, in theory, be shitting on the legacy of these historical women who were killed during the witch trials
so for one thing, the outrage is ridiculous because in Both situations there’s no way of knowing any exact details, so right now there is no reason for outrage (especially in the second case, because there is absolutely no way of knowing the episode will have ANYTHING to do with witches at all, it’s literally people just hypothesising and getting angry at their own hypotheses). secondly, i feel like there’s a fundamental difference between the idea of ‘doctor who solves racism’/‘aliens cause racism’ and ‘what if aliens caused the witch trials’, mostly because the montgomery bus boycotts happened within living memory and racism isn’t a thing of the past, whereas the witch trials happened hundreds of years ago and have been made light of in many things including HARRY POTTER. thirdly, no one made a fuss when, in this show, aliens caused the GREAT FIRE OF LONDON which caused to the deaths of 6 people directly and harmed many many more due to loss of housing and livelihood. comparing the two things is nonsensical, in my opinion
