Hi there, I'm going to university next year, and because of my family situation, all of my unis are far from home and everything I know. I have OCD and intense paranoias that go along with it - like people being in my house when I'm alone, people breaking in while I'm sleeping etc. Obviously, when I go to uni, my routines are going to be disturbed and I'll have to live alone at some point, both of which freak me out no end. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you, please tag OCDfreak xx
Hey OCDfreak, thank you so much for reaching out to us, I know it can be scary asking for help!
I'm so happy that you're doing something as amazing as going to university! I understand that it's a big thing, and can definitely be scary especially when you're far from home. I moved away from home for an apprenticeship last year, and I was awfully homesick for the first few months, but it gets less scary I promise!
I want you to remember that just because you're far away from your home and family, that doesn't mean you're alone. You'll meet people in classes, and get to know the people that are living in your dorm (assuming you are). You'll also stay in contact with everyone back home, and you'll go home for holidays etc. You can also keep in contact with your friends, and I'm sure they're scared too if they're going to uni.
If you're not staying in a dorm, and instead are renting a room near your university you'll probably have multiple room mates, so please try not to worry about living alone. If you're getting your own place, make sure to talk to the neighbors and get to know them or consider a roommate.
If you're not already, I urge you to seek help before you go. You can see your GP, or anyone that you trust. Getting into some sort of therapy before you make a big life change can be very helpful, as they can give you help and advice on things you can do to make the change easier. You could also talk to them about starting medication if you aren't on any already. I feel that it will help you greatly and make the transition easier.
I also suggest that once you've settled into uni a little bit, seek some help there too. Universities have councillors just like schools do, but if you don't feel like they're suited for your needs you can contact your old GP and get in contact with a local mental health service.
Is there anything that you could take with you that could make you feel better? Something from home to maybe keep you comfort or watch over you when you're sleeping. If it were me I'd take a stuffed toy etc.
I hope this helps, please message me again if you need anymore advice or have any more questions.
Good luck when you go to Uni, I believe you'll do fantastically.
