So I have a question about gender in Tatooine slave culture: do they assign genders? Because Anakin and Padme have their "you name it if it's a girl, I'll name it if it's a boy" thing, but that assumes that they think that they'll know the child's gender from when it's born, and that they didn't consider that it could be anything other that one of those two options. Is this a product of Anakin being raised in the Jedi temple and absorbing their ideas about gender, (pt 1/2)
(pt 2/2) or do parents assign gender on Tatooine as well? You've talked a bit about how people may functionally have two genders, one that's their actual gender and one assigned to them by the depuran, but do parents assign their kids a gender. If they do, is it assigned differently than it would be in the republic (I can't even think of what that might be, but I also would not have called genitals so idk) (but now I am amused at the concept of gender being assigned via eye color at birth)?
(pt 3/2)(sorry) If kids aren't assigned a gender, then how does it work with them asking to be called a different set of pronouns? Is there a ceremony? Are one set of pronouns used for all children, and if so which set? Do parents even just... assign their kids as male in Standard, regardless of their parts because that's a much easier life if you're a slave? If they do assign gender, how would a kid go about changing that. Okay, that was way more than one question. So tell us a story : )Â
I think they do assign gender at birth, yeah. But it’s a much looser kind of assignment than in, say, US culture. It’s more like: we know the Masters are going to gender this child, and that’s going to have a major impact on their life, but we also know the child may choose a different gender when they’re old enough to do so, and if that happens, the community will acknowledge them accordingly.
Gender assigned at birth on Tatooine is considered more of a starting point than something that will determine the person’s life. It’s something that can be changed practically at any time. Names also can be changed - actually self-naming is a major thing in Tatooine slave culture even apart from issues of gender.
And a lot of Amatakka names are gender-neutral to begin with. Anakin is a gender neutral name, as is Lukka (but this is a name that often gets semi-translated into Basic, where it picks up a gender, becoming either Luke or Lucy). Leia is gendered female, though, as is Shmi.
There is a ceremony for self-naming, and a variant ceremony for choosing / announcing your gender to the community.
I do think Anakin has absorbed a somewhat more strident view of gender from his time as a Jedi, but only somewhat. Besides, the Jedi are more than aware of the fact that many other species have more than two genders, so why do they seem to think humans only have two?
