Loving Community- A Blog Post
Hello you guys! Today I am going to go outside of the movie reviews and dive into my television interests. My first TV review will be of a show I am sad I didn't get into earlier, Community. Which is, by far, the best show on television, but possibly not for long.
To preface, I am a fan of innovative and well-crafted comedies. It's what I would like to write in my future and it makes me happy knowing that someone is successful in doing so.
Community is a show about seven people going to a Community College who end up in a study group together. You have Jeff (Joel McHale), who is a recently deferred lawyer who needs a quick and easy degree to get back into the game. Jeff starts this study group to try and hook up with Britta (Gillian Jacobs), a high school drop-out/ social activist who doesn't take crap. Abed (Danny Pudi) a Muslim boy who is in love with film (remind you of anyone?) and is extremely socially awkward. Annie (Alison Brie, or as I call her, "My future wife") is a girl with loads of wherewithal and a go-get-em attitude, but was expelled from her high school for having a Aderol-enduced breakdown. Shirley (Yvette Nicole Brown) is a recently divorced Christian mom who longs for youth, education, and a medium to sell her baked goods. Troy (Donald Glover) is a former high school star quarter back who lost his scholarship for getting injured during a "keg-flip." Lastly, there is Pierce (Chevy Chase), an aged man who has earned a fortune from his family's moist towelette business. He is also perverted and not as wise as he thinks he is.
The show, quite obviously, chronicles the everyday mischief this rag-tag group of misfits gets into. On several occasions, mainly in the pilot, the group is compared to The Breakfast Club (The Pilot was dedicated to John Hughes in fact) which is an appropriate analogy.
As mentioned before, this show is the very best example of great comedy writing, but it also has the willingness to be flexible. Quite often, sometime recognizable, the actors in this show will improvise something that adds a whole new layer to the scene (The creator has mentioned that Chevy Chase and Donald Glover are the two best at this). Once I found that out, I found a whole new layer of respect for this show, thus transcending the possible spectrum of respect available to any broadcast. Meaning that my respect for this show has had to dip into several other spectrums I have available for other types of media (mainly books).
Having a set of unique character and a lucrative and easily-satirized setting, Community had good chances from the beginning, but in no way did I think it would be this great. Community uses a base of meta-humor, trope-usage, and knowing how to pick on the cast combined with great art design, cinematography, theme episodes, and great guest stars to create the most unique program currently on television.
However, I may not be able to say that forever....
Recently, NBC shelved Community half-way through its third season run. This was a huge stab in the face to the many die-hard fans of the show. In fact, a few of them gathered around 30 Rockefeller during the Holidays to sing "Oh Christmas Troy" (a song made by characters in the show) to demonstrate their support of Community. NBC has announced that they will air all of the remaining Season 3 episodes at a later air-date. The big concern to fans now is whether or not the show will be renewed. Well, here's hoping.
