hey gal (it's mads from occasionallyorganised)- I'm exchanging next semester & I need some help! I'm finishing my housing application and because the culture surrounding living and studying at uni is so different in Australia compared to the USA, I have no idea what living on campus will be like?? What are the benefits of living in a suite vs. living in an on campus apartment, & what do you (or anyone else) think about meal plans? And I'm going to do a fair bit of traveling too. Please help! xx
hey there! so living on campus in america (from what i experienced) has its ups and downs. depending on the dorm, you’re either going to have a comfortable amount of space, or you’re living in a box with another human and attempting to make it work. it’s okay, though, because you really only need your dorm to sleep in. you can always study and work at other places on campus. the community bathrooms are a little blehhh but once you settle into the system it’s bearable.
so by suite do you mean a place off-campus? i enjoyed that SO much better than dorm life. for one, you get your own bathroom. two, you get your own washer and dryer, most likely. if you get a decent apartment, you’ll get a full kitchen (fridge, oven, stove, microwave), washer/dryer, and bathroom. you’ll also get the options of living by yourself, or with 1-4 people. the more people you live with, the less expensive (but you obviously get less privacy and deal with more people.)Â
for meal plans, they are always convenient because you either spend a consistent amount each meal (limiting your spending) or you get “dining dollars” which will allow you to buy stuff at the campus convenience stores. make sure to talk to someone about which plan to get, though, because a lot of people get a plan with way too much money and end up having to waste it all at the end of the semester.Â
will you have a car? if not, research all the ways of transportation you’re going to have. you might need to buy passes like metro cards. bus routes are consistent so just see which ones you’ll need to take wherever you need to go.
feel free to add to this post!
