Part of Phoenix's power is that she is immune to fire and cannot get damaged by smoke. Aurora's gravity-based powers are very unique, but at the time of The Incident, she hadn't fully refined her use of them. (Hence not being promoted to captain just yet)

here it is: The Incident

Phoenix and part of her team were investigating an abandoned warehouse that had been reported to supposedly be part of a drug operation. Phoenix finds a fully furnished office inside of a locked room, with the hero organization's logo on the computer.

On a whim, Phoenix is able to unlock the computer using the company slogan as the password and finds that the organization she works for has been funding a terrorist group that targets and kills people with "destructive" or dangerous powers, with Pheonix herself having those kind of powers.

She brings this to Aurora. Aurora is then instructed through her ear-piece by their boss that if she kills Pheonix to keep their company's secret, she will be promoted to captain of her own team, that her family will be taken care of for the rest of their lives. If she doesn't kill her, Aurora will die with her.

Aurora breaks. She forces her to the floor with her power, weeping as Pheonix's lungs are crushed under the weight of her own gravity. She leaves her there to die as the warehouse goes up in flames. The rest of the team leave with only minor injuries.

They tell them it was an accident. That the warehouse was a trap and was set to blow.

Zel knew that was a lie when they saw Phoenix's body as it was recovered. They knew what Aurora's powers were capable of.

He confronted her, nearly killed her in the fight that followed, but was arrested by the other heroes. He was released, and told that he was blinded by his grief. Phoenix was crushed by rebar in the explosion, and Aurora had nothing to do with it.

Zel knew the others were wrong.

🏳️‍🌈: I take pride (haha) in making most of my characters lgbtqia+ in some way shape or form. It's just more fun. This is gonna be copy pasted from another post I made lol.

Zel: Enby (He/They), pansexual, demiromantic

Phoenix: omnisexual

Luke: transmasc, demisexual, demiromantic, abrosexual

Plague: Sapphic, aspec

Marlin: bisexual (woman/nonbinary preference), greysexual

Aurora: aroace

And they're all polyamourous because I said so :]

Zel knew they weren't a man or woman from a pretty young age, but they felt more masculine-leaning. they couldn't say where it started. Phoenix, their wife, grew up thinking that liking all genders was the norm, Luke realized he was a guy in his early to mid teens, and demiromantic when he had his first crush on someone around the same time. Aurora doesn't actually have a label for how she feels yet, she just knows she isn't interested in sex or romance. Plague was Marlin's bisexual awakening, and Plague never found men attractive.

🏳️‍⚧️: Since the world of Eyes Of Justice takes place in is filled with mutants and superpowers, gender and sexuality isn't really a big deal to most normal people. Of course, there are exceptions to this. Luke, for example, comes from a matriarchal hierarchy in his family/clan system (they're spider mutants i feel like i should clarify this), so his transitioning was perceived as weakness. So his experience with his family was. Bad.

A lot of the heteronormativity that's pushed is based in passing down powers, but its not really in a "only men and women should be together" and more of a "make sure you continue your bloodline" which is.... still bad. Some groups take it wayy too far and delve into eugenics, but thats a conversation for another time. Of course, some people are still seriously homophobic and transphobic, but they receive more public backlash for it.

Marlin and Plague receive the least amount of homophobia because they literally own a bar and are surrounded by other queer people, same with Phoenix because she had a very loving family. Zel was already bullied for looking like a "monster" and identifying as enby just caused it to get worse. Their adult life is much better in that regard. Aurora's mother, while she was still alive, hated that she didn't want to be in a relationship, but her dad and step-mom supported her.

Plague is very physical, punching people's shoulders, she often rests her head on top of Marlowe's when she's at her desk or kissing her hand (or kissing her in general. Marlowe thinks she'd crawl into her skin if she could)

Marlin does little acts of service, like bringing water to Plague when she drinks too much, makes people food, etc. She's actually fond of Luke, so she brings him sandwiches sometimes when he forgets to eat (she always packs extra because Jemma is bad about eating too)

A special Marlin/Plague thing- they have necklaces with each other's blood inside it in lieu of rings :) freaks /pos

Luke also likes physical affection, but he is much more subdued about it. He's more gentle nudges and arm squeezes than being over the top. He also really enjoys long talks about anything.

Phoenix gives small gifts, like a book someone was eyeing or sets up nice dates for her and Zel. She and Aurora started a "book club" (its just the two of them) back in their training days, but what Aurora doesn't know is that Phoenix just wanted to be closer friends lol

Zel is reaaaally really bad at expressing affection. They become more animated when talking to someone they care about and sometimes they wrap their tail around Phoenix and Luke. He tries his best to make sure his loved ones know they're loved.

Aurora likes spending time with people she loves. She'll do outings with them, or she's perfectly content just sitting in the same room doing separate things.

🐦‍🔥: I think ive spoken enough about Phoenix's death enough (ironically) so I'll talk about Zel's mom. Zel's mom died when they were two or three, and their father was never in the picture, so they grew up in foster care. Due to multiple awful experiences in foster homes and group homes, mostly discrimination against them for being devilkin, they became a hero. They know next to nothing about themselves and their powers, because they've never met anyone like them before.

🐉: More than anything, Zel will protect the people he loves, friends, family, and partners. They never had people that loved them, so they will die for those that do.
