Oh of course! Give me an excuse to blab a little about my writing and I’ll blab, lol:

So, I’m doing less of a rewrite of the Snow Queen and more of an expansion I guess? One of the things that has always bothered me about the story is that some of the events and characters don’t feel very connected to the themes—the biggest thing example being the fact that the two antagonistic forces, the Fairy Mirror and the Snow Queen, don’t have anything to do with each other. There is a reason for this, of course, but I thought for this retelling it would be fun to make all the events and characters a bit more interconnected. I’m following all of the same story beats (except for maybe the part where Gerda gets kidnapped by robbers), but expanding on them here and there—The Crow is a shapeshifter, the Prince is Kay’s long-lost brother who left their village a long time ago (hence why Gerda mistakes him for Kay; Kay may also have a little bit of a complex about this), The Witch in the cottage, the Snow Queen, and Gerda’s grandmother all turn out to be sisters, etc.

Instead of a shard of the glass in his eye and heart, Kay is afflicted by the Snow Queen’s curse (I may end up calling in a Blight, as it affects the land as well) that curses a random person every 50-or-so years to become her thrall and become her instrument of vengeance (although on whom or for what I won’t say) until the Blight freezes them from the inside out. They do get freaky ice powers, though.

I’m changing up the setting a little bit as well, I’m going to have Gerda and Kay be from a very isolated island community (which makes Kay’s disappearance even more concerning), and the further Gerda travels and the closer she gets to the Snow Queen’s palace, the colder the climate gets. I don’t know if I want to necessarily equate cold with evil, but I at least want to emphasize that Gerda and Kay were not made for this sort of climate, lol.

I am aging-up Gerda and Kay and making their relationship explicitly romantic, but not in the YA fantasy romance sort of way—they start out as childhood best friends a la the original story, and I want to make it seem as if Kay might be about to propose (or something like that) right before he’s suddenly struck by the Blight and starts acting distant/like a jerk, so that for her entire journey Gerda is questioning what he was about to say and is left in doubt what their relationship means to him, but chases after him anyway.

Of course! Let me give you a little background on who they are real quick:

Gerda is my main character from my Snow Queen retelling, and is based off of the original Gerda from Anderson’s fairy tale. Her name is not actually going to be Gerda (probably, unless I change my mind), I just haven’t found a name I like to suit her yet.

Kyelle is a character from a fantasy series I’ve been working on for a really long time—I won’t give too many details on that, because there are a lot, but the short version is that it’s about the people of a sky kingdom (I don’t know if you’re familiar with the Zelda game Skyward Sword, but if you are, think Skyloft, but on a much larger scale) being exiled to earth and trying to find a way to reclaim what they’ve lost. Kyelle is a knight-in-training (or at least, she wishes she was), and is a close friend of my main character, the future queen.

4. Do they enjoy baking?

Gerda absolutely does! She lives alone with her grandmother, so often they do their cooking and baking together, and she values what her grandmother teaches her very highly. (Also as Kay is usually hanging around, it’s always a good idea to make more than they can make themselves.)

Baking was never a skill that Kyelle specifically cultivated, but she’s not completely unfamiliar with it, as her mother is a pretty renowned baker. She’s always ready to lend help in the kitchen if someone requires it, but it’s never been something she’s particularly enjoyed.

6. If they were badly injured, and for whatever reason couldn’t go to a hospital, who would they go to for help?

Gerda would definitely go to her grandmother—she is a renowned healer, and her skills border on the (suspiciously) miraculous.

I’m so glad you asked this question for Kyelle, because the answer is hilarious—she would probably go to her childhood friend Miles, but absolutely hate every second of it. The two grew up together, but were always a little at odds, as Kyelle was always very driven and serious, while Miles was a bit more of the carefree prankster, and definitely got on her nerves on purpose. Now that they’re older, the fact that Miles was once training to join the knights but then quit is a major point of contention for the two of them. Kyelle thinks it was out of laziness, when actually he decided his skills were better served in training under his mother to take over her job as apothecary. Realizing that Miles is actually a very competent healer would be a slap-in-the-face wake-up call for her (and is absolutely happening at some point).

12. Do they have a sense of style? Regardless of the answer do they believe they have a sense of style?

I don’t know if Gerda believes she has a sense of style, but regardless she does love looking pretty in what is available to her. She lives in a tiny, fairly closed-off island community, and resources are somewhat limited, so wearing hand-me-downs is just a fact of life there, but no one really bats an eye about it.

Kyelle tends to care more about functionality when it comes to everyday clothing, but if the occasion requires it, has no qualms about fancy dresses and heels. Though untrained, she has a surprisingly good eye for putting outfits together.

16. Do they want or have kids?

Gerda definitely wants kids, as her upbringing has always been a little lonely, and thinks a bustling, full house would be absolutely wonderful.

I genuinely don’t think that Kyelle has ever actually thought about it, or avoids thinking about it if she can. She doesn’t hate kids, per se, but has never been super comfortable around them either. (Which is hilarious given that she’s going to have NINE in the future. Mwahahahahahahaa.)

17. How easily would they be convinced to do something that goes against their morals?

It would take a lot for Gerda—a lot. Her sense of morality and general goodness is one of her strongest traits, and causing that to waver would probably crush her sense of identity. The only time I could see it happening is if Kay’s life were on the line—but honestly, even then, her sense of right and wrong is so strong, I’m not sure.

Kyelle’s sense of morality is also pretty strong, but I could see that breaking if she felt she needed to do something in the name of duty. Her sense of duty to both her country and her position are very strong, so if she felt she had to do something that went against her morals for the sake of it, she would grit her teeth and do it, however much she disliked it.

I can't find a good gif of it, but Gerda's is definitely Iroh's "I was never angry with you. I was sad because I was afraid you'd had lost your way.

For Kay: again, can't find a gif of it, but it's the bit where Zuko and Aang get trapped in a tar pit, Aang is yelling for help and Zuko tells him not to bother because no one has lived there for centuries, and Aang says "Well, what do you think we should do?" and Zuko says "...think about our place in the universe?"

19. Which Austen heroine/hero are they most like?

I think Gerda is probably the most like Elinor Dashwood or Anne Eliot--quiet and dependable, somewhat unwilling to voice her feelings, but has a very strong moral sense.

Kay's a little harder to nail down, as none of Austen's heroes really have their head so completely full of plans and ideas like he does--probably a combination of Charles Bingley, for his enthusiasm, and Henry Tilney, for his charm and wit but slight tendency towards cynicism.

31. If they were a tea, what tea would they be?

Originally I was going to say earth for Gerda, but actually I think it makes the most sense for her to be a non-bender. She’s very attached to her mundanity. I could still see her being from the Earth Kingdom, though.

Joker would 100% be an Airbender—she’s very cheerful and free-spirited—although I can’t imagine she’d jive well with the strict asceticism of being a monk 😂

⭐️ What do you think their job would be in a Star Wars AU?

I could see Gerda working behind the bar of a cantina, actually—a very reputable cantina, of course. She would enjoy how connected to the community she’d be in that position.

Joker would probably be a Jedi, although a Jedi somewhat in the vein of Qui-Gon Jinn where her methods are very odd and unconventional and the Council doesn’t know what to do with her.

Gerda would probably be in Demeter’s cabin—or if Hestia’s, if she had one. She’s very down to earth and loves making her home a cozy one.

I could see Hermes for Joker, because of the whole traveling thing, but I could also see Aphrodite. She’s kind of ✨glamorous✨
