yeah. :( but how would ruining terezi’s self-esteem over the course of a year(?)-long black relationship further aranea’s goals? it doesn’t seem to make much sense for her character, more as just another fandom gamzee-blame-absolving tactic.

I think the people that wanted to argue that Gamzee is a sweet babbu who got a little cranky that one time when he murdered two people jumped ship after he dragged his bleeding carcass all the way over to Caliborn's side (I'm still hoping that he decided to hork those keys up at his messiah's feet on his own..but his behavior seems to indicate that Aranea was controlling him at the time)

The theory I linked to argued that Aranea's long term goal was to remake herself as Mindfang (or better than mindfang). In order to be better than Mindfang she would need to beat Red Glare. Looking at it in less poetic terms, Terezi as a confident Seer of Mind may have been able to figure out Aranea's plot much earlier, instead she renounced her powers and descended into a haze of self loathing.

i mean…yes, he is being mind controlled right now, probably, robbing the situation of pretty much all catharsis for terezi. which is terrible. but he’s also responsible for being a complete asshole to terezi. those aren’t mutually exclusive.

It might be Aranea that was responsible for their relationship, or it might be Gamzee (like I said in that huge, long reply to your ask). Terezi may have been having a black relationship with a goal oriented Aranea in a Gamzee suit all along.

I'd actually prefer if it had been all him. If his choices had led him to be a complete asshole to Terezi it would be a million times better than 'oh snap some bad guy made him be an asshole as part of a plan to destroy Terezi's self confidence'. 

It could be that Aranea just used Gamzee to get the ring and that's it. It could be that she's been controlling his actions for the entirety of Act 6. Or it could be somewhere in between those two extremes. I was also inclined to say that she only controlled him to get the ring until I read Apolojia's rather sinster but detailed theory which I've taken to heart because, shit, it makes a huge amount of sense. It could also be that he's only been mind controlled since he started wearing the cod-tier outfit (his smiley-benign behavior in the face of massive physical damage seems to have its origins with Aranea).
