Astrophelâs feet made little noise as he padded down the torchlit tunnels, wings gently brushing the tapestries hung over the walls. The Beast Paladins followed him, along with Sepehrâs companion Priam. âWouldnât it be safer to have our briefing away from the caves, if you think Korst suspects us?â
âFor fear of valley spirits,â said Sepehr. The blind Wildclawâs talons tapped the floor in front of him, searching for any unevenness or stray rocks, and Priam walked at his side. âJorell tells the matriarch everything, âtis not safe to be discussing secret plans under the open sky.â
âIndeed he does,â rumbled a voice behind them, like rocks sliding together, and Nyrasis and Iseult whirled, talons out, as Korst appeared in the tunnel, her gilded horns glittering in the light. Astrophel hissed and pressed himself back against the rocky cave wall.
Tybal and Aslesa filled the tunnel in front of them, golden and brown eyes shining fiercely. âLooks like we found our traitor,â growled Tybal, scraping his claws along the rock.
âGently, Tybal,â warned his sister with a ruffle of her shining feathers. She turned her attention to Astrophel, tilting her head. âWe knew about the activities of the shapeshifters, stealing from other clans and assassinating their leaders, but... I never thought it would be you who was giving them their instructions.â
Astrophel protested, âItâs- itâs not like that! We need the money, itâs expensive to outfit an army, and you make so many enemies- you arenât the most tactful-â
A flick of Korstâs tail silenced him, and the ridgeback drew herself to her full height, eyes gleaming red in the dim and flickering light. âEnough,â she boomed. âYou could have left the clan, many times over, if you disagreed with me. But instead, you went behind my back, made us more enemies than I ever have.â A long, forked tongue darted between her teeth.
âThe three of you I give two days to leave the valley,â she growled. âAstrophel will remain under close supervision until such time as we can arrange him a trial. Tybal, escort him to his quarters.â
Tybal moved forwards and shouldered the smaller imperial roughly, forcing him down the hallway, and the shapeshifters scattered. Aslesaâs head drooped, and she sighed. Sympathetic, Korst draped a wing over the slender skydancer.
âWhat happened to us?â asked Aslesa, her deep brown eyes searching. Korst only sighed, her eyes on the orange flames of the torches.

âA job well done, Iâd say,â Sepehr said brightly, tossing a bottle of glowing blue venom from claw to claw. The blind assassinâs ears twitched, following the sound of the bottle whistling through the air. âYou get what you wanted?â he asked his partner. Priam nodded, his arms piled high with ancient scrolls.
Nyrasis sniffed. âYou could have picked a better target,â she said to Iseult. âNo treasure to be found anywhere, and his spellbooks were practically archaic.â
With a quiet bleating noise, Priam retorted, âAncient wisdom is far more valuable than a paltry few coins, and that charlatan was wasting it.â He cowered back behind Sepehrâs legs as Nyrasis twisted her head around, feathers bristling.
Sighing, Iseult spread her wings. âI told you before, the targets have nothing to do with the treasure you two pick up. Three dragons of our... abilities... have the power to change the course of the world.â
âAnd get treasure,â said Nyrasis, flicking an unimpressed antenna. Sepehr shrugged.
âNyra, âtis important that we focus on the greater mission. As Iseult says, three dragons in the right places can topple an empire, shatter the underground of Sornieth. Besides, the slaver we targeted last moon had all the treasure you could desire- just a stroke of luck that this target had the scrolls that Priam wanted.â
Iseult nodded. âStow the scrolls,â she said. âIâll give Astrophel our mission report.â
With a sharp click, the Stonewatch prince Kaerio shook his head. He took off from Nyrasisâ shoulder in a flurry of brown feathers and looped above Iseultâs head. âBetter not,â he said. âI saw Korst going into the scrivenerâs cave.â
âItâs not Korst Iâm worried about, itâs Aslesa,â said Sepehr, still tossing the vial from claw to claw. In a single swift movement, he snatched it out of the air and tucked it into his satchel. âKorst has done a bit of killing herself, Iâll wager.â
âI can take my chances with Korst- I must deliver the report quickly,â said Iseult. âScouts say the Pastwalker caravan is coming through the valley tonight, and I will be needed as a translator.â And with that, she shifted into a sandy-haired centaur and galloped away.
I finally got the third member of the Beast Paladins! Three shapeshifters on a mission to eradicate the Shade from Sornieth, they do not use the label âpaladinâ themselves but have come to be known by it. Bios for Nyrasis and Sepehr are coming soon!

Sepehr, reconnaissance specialist and assassin, companion of scholar PriamÂ
Iseult, warrior, linguist, and companion of the centaur Tristram
