So many branches, like words in a heavy book, dense and overwhelming. But soon they’ll be swallowed in humid green that blocks the sky and overwhelms everything in sight, and then it’ll be too late. So precarious is the whole exercise that the paint seems to be clinging on for dear life. How did it even get there? And what an incoherent mess. Today a woman and her child walked along the path on the opposite hillside. She saw me, stopped short and told her child to look at the painter! I met her gaze and held it for a moment, then she began to wave hello, her hand rocking side to side wildly. As I waved back her face melted into a huge grin and so did mine. It was a small distraction and soon I was back to blobbing paint on clumps of color.
