Happy spring, everyone! At 11:33am EST, we officially hit our vernal equinox — the moment in which the plane of Earth's equator passes through the center of the Sun. Did you miss it? Well, you're in luck. It occurs twice each year, around March 20th and again around September 22nd. This 2011 image from Geosync shows us at the point of equinox, as well as solstice. During an equinox, day and night are of approximately equal duration all over the planet. They are not perfectly equal, however, due to the angular size of the sun and atmospheric refraction. To avoid this ambiguity, the word equilux is sometimes used to mean a day in which the durations of light and darkness are equal.
