Burn-off Extra Calories by Following the Food Label Instructions
A recent study says that food labels should be redesigned for the betterment of consumers’ overall health. The study further revealed that instead of mentioning the calorie count of any ingredient, food labels should provide details on how long it takes to burn off consumed calories. For example, a chicken & bacon sandwich adds 450 calories and a can of coke supplements another 15.6. Such a high calorie count probably may not stop you from eating up, however if you see that it will take 1 hour 22-minute walk or 42 minutes running to burn off those calories, then you may not eat the whole of it.
According to British doctors out of the Royal Society for Public Health, “current nutrition food labels that list fat, calories, and salt aren’t helping consumers. They suggested that companies should add exercise or activity equivalence on the food package”.
The aim of this research is to increase the awareness among people to be more alert of the calories or energy they are consuming and how much time is required to shed off these extra consumed calories. It will then encourage them to do more physical activities and lead an active lifestyle.
As per market survey, around 45% of consumers are finding the food packaging information confusing. Fifty-five percent said they’d prefer the suggested changes as it would positively affect their health and help them in choosing healthier options.
