Forgot to start this a couple of days ago but the days this year align with my Not The Nine O'Clock News 1982 page-a-day Rip Off Annual so I thought I'd share it every day. #NTNOCN #1982
Not the Nine O’Clock News - The Two Ninnies There’s an interesting backstory to this sketch as Ronnie Barker criticised Not the Nine O'Clock news for being too vulgar, which disheartened some of the NTNOCN team who idolised him, but lit a fire under other staffers to subvert those claims by offering an on-screen riposte with their own Two Ronnies-style sketch, underlining the hypocrisy of Barker's (and partner Ronnie Corbett's) frequent use of pre-watershed sexual innuendo. If I remember, producer John Lloyd thought the whole thing was hilarious, but Mel Smith didn't care for it since he was firmly in the camp of Barker admiration, and thought the Two Ronnies were far too soft a target to aim for when they already had so many politicians to lampoon, but was the only member of the troupe who bore any physical resemblance to the great man, and thus got talked into performing it. The Two Ronnies never offered a counterpiece, although Corbett, who was never a critic of the show to begin with, privately admitted to enjoying the accurately sharpened parody. --- On an unrelated note, my favourite Ronnie Corbett story is the one where he got into a lift with a hungover Craig Charles, who accidentally let one go right in the diminutive Corbett’s face, prompting Corbett to abandon ship on the second floor. Charles later discovered that Corbett was actually filming on the fifth floor, and had found the stench to be so appallingly rotten that he had preferred to take the stairs for the rest of the journey.
Brilliant new wave/new romantic pastiche by Not the Nine O’Clock News.

This actually happened to me in Ireland in 1993 when I found a lucky Irish penny on the floor.
This sketch is from 1980 and is probably truer today than ever

Yet another reason I love Not the Nine O'Clock News
