Takeshi Kovacs had added a lot of blood to his ledger that day. He thought about all the blood on his hands -- blood he’d only recently scrubbed away, while the doctors were seeing to his queen -- as he lowered Elsa into the tub, seating her on his thigh, her back resting against his chest. “It’s not too hot, is it, love?” he whispered, her sounds of pain slicing his heart like ice shards being driven into him. Every wound on her small body -- from the abrasions on her wrists to the small cuts on her face -- was a reminder of his carelessness, his failure. So far, he’d skated by on pure adrenaline and rage... but he knew from the slight shaking in his hands that the energy and focus that had driven him to find Elsa in the clutches of her uncle’s cronies was fading fast.
He’d used a bath soak of milk and lavender flowers, substances that the doctors had verified would be safe for the queen’s injured body. “I’m so sorry, m’lady,” he murmured, holding her as tenderly as he could, feeling the first trickle of a tear carve its way down his cheek. “The doctors left a stronger pain medication to help you sleep. I’ll remind you right before bed.” The raw, hoarse sound of her voice shredded his heart even more raggedly. Perhaps more soup or honey-sweetened tea before bed would also be advisable.
He felt her fingers seeking his beneath the water, and he closed his hand around hers, their fingers intertwining. Pressing his lips to the crown of her head, he nodded, another set of tears escaping his eyes and mixing into her hair. “I won’t leave you. I’ll never leave you again, Elsa. I’m so sorry...” His voice cracked, nearly as raw as hers.
