Late night talking
It was movie night, the usual trio was sitting on the couch sorta watching. Friskâs attention span was fighting between the phone and the tv, Clover was deep in thought about something and Chara was just sitting there with their red eyes glued to their screen as they ate their chocolate bar slowly. The cowboy always found it funny how something as simple as a phone or a television can absorb all of their attention that fast but they could tell the first fallen was tired as he watched their eyes start to drop slowly at the same time trying to stay awake.Â
Clover just found it silly watching this tired catastrophe which is how they would put it. A small laugh was let out.
âTryna stay awake huh?â. She asked in a joking manner.
âShut up cowboy,â. They yawned slowly showing it was a losing battle trying to stay up.Â
âIt's alright to sleep ya knowâ. They spoke.
âYou know I donât want to sleepâ. Eyes darted away for a moment, Cloverâs expression softened as they slowly scooched over close to Chara trying to give them some comfort.Â
âI know but⌠nothing's gonna happen to ya, me and Frisk are hereâ. The reason was vague as to why the first fallen hated going to sleep, why there were sleepless nights and how itâs obvious that they were tired constantly.
âWhile thatâs true, I just donât want to sleep⌠it's⌠dumbâ. They huffed.Â
âCanât be that dumb,â.
âIt's just⌠Iâm scared that if I close my eyes⌠I wonât ever wake up like last time. Being awake constantly gives me some solace that nothing bad will happenâ. They looked at the cowpoke, red eyes boring into his yellow eyes. âI donât want to sleep permanently again⌠Cloverâ.Â
âAnd you wonât, Iâll be here when you fall asleep and Iâll be here when you wake up,â. Their arm moved pushing Charaâs ahead against their shoulder so the revived human can rest and the fears can be washed away, yellow eyes looking back at the television to see whatâs playing. The first fallen let out a soft sigh feeling the comfort as their eyes slowly shut, falling into the deep slumber that awaits them.Â

âHey I think⌠I like ya partnerâ.
âDonât say stupid stuff like thatâ. Were the last words running through as they watched Cloverâs now lifeless body drop to the floor as Floweyâs vine retracted, flicking the blood off. They were in disbelief to see⌠the cowboy laying there as the yellow soul of [JUSTICE] manifested out of their body forming into Cloverâs ghost. Both of them with eyes wide staring into each other slowly reaching out, now ghostly hands making contact with one another. Holding. Theyâve held hands before when the cowboy was living but this time it felt⌠real. For a short moment⌠Just feeling them intertwined made this feel alright and was comforting though it was short lived as Flowey took everyoneâs souls absorbing them⌠even Clover as they started to be pulled away, Chara grabbed on to the cowboy as hard as they could, tears forming. They didnât want the cowboy to go at all. Their grip was holding on to her sleeves as tight as possible, fingers digging into the fabric trying to pull them back. The first fallen didnât want him gone! They didnât want the clover gone, there was so much to say to them⌠and time was running short.Â
Frisk watched from the sidelines, still taking into the shock that Flowey, their best friend, would do this and kill someone as close as Clover. As much as Chara tried to pull forward away from the weed their grip was slipping away inch by inch as the pull was strong.
âCLOVER!â. They shoutedÂ
âWell⌠partnerâŚâ.
âNO! Donât you dare!â.
âGuess⌠Iâll see ya on the other sideâ.
âClover! I love you!â. Was the last thing Chara shouted as the cowboy was pulled away, the small flower becoming Asriel Dreemurr. Tears were flowing down their cheeks, filled with distraught and shock⌠on one hand Asriel is here! Heâs living but on the other Clover⌠is somewhere. They were too late to realize how much they loved Clover. To finally admit it and they felt like it was scummy to admit that when the soul of justice was being absorbed. Frisk put a hand on the fallenâs shoulder
*â Hey! Weâll get Clover back! Donât worryâŚâ. The human spoke in comfort
âIâll hold you to thatâ.
The Mural
Safety Village, a dumb name but it's peaceful. Just seeing how the others work in harmony either on farm work or talking. Frisk and Clover were helping out just trying to enjoy their time here and until the eventual departure to continue the journey. On a big wall there was a mural, hand drawn by the people living there. It was a tree with various people plastered on it sorta as a remembrance, like they died, currently grieving them. There were potted flowers or non potted flowers. Few of the villagers were kneeling down doing prayers, probably assuring their lost ones that everything is ok and want them a safe passage to whatever afterlife they believe in.
Chara stood in front of it staring at it, as the drawn image of them and⌠Asriel. Still taking in that people still care even if Asgore did everything in his power to defame them. It made them feel happy even if they couldnât fully feel it. Their red eyes sometimes flicker to the praying villagers, glaring at them then back at the painting.Â
Clover who was carrying items looked over to see them, she looked over a few times before probably thinking Chara is having a headache again or day dreaming. Do ghosts day dream? They brushed it off but it was like a nagging feeling biting them. Putting the box down and finally walking over, standing next to the apparition, looking at the mural with them.
âHey are you ok?â. They asked and Chara snapped out of it and looked over at the cowboy.
âUh yea⌠Iâm fine,â.
âAre you sure? Youâve been staring at that painting for a while ya knowâ.Â
â...â.
âYou know I donât mind a conversation,â. They smiled offering some comfort. Silence for a moment.
âDo you think⌠the people on this mural served a purpose?â.
âWhat kind of question is that? Yea of course they do!â. Clover looked at them for once.
âSo then, do I serve a purpose?â. Before Clover was about to answer, a monster walked over looking at the mural with them. There was a cat-like monster being mixed with another animal, who went by the name âAvarkâ. He was sorta like the guy in charge of Safety Village.Â
* âInterested in this huh?â. They asked.Â
âYea,â.
* âIts to mourn those weâve lost over our time here, my granddad made it to honor them, and my dad added more as they succumbed to illness or⌠deathâ. Avark explained, seemingly proud of it, you could see it in the way their eyes stare at the painting.Â
âWhoâs your granddad?â.Â
* âOh heâsâŚâ. That part was garbled when the name was heard. Chara looked at the two in shock with confusion. It felt familiar but it didnât register fully. Mind trying to register to it to a royal family. Looking back at the monster they chalked it up to familiarity too on the appearance and species. Their memory felt⌠fuzzy, rubbing hands through their hair, noticing that some parts of memory have been missing. Looking back at them slowly trying to listen to the conversation and gain some sense of normalcy so Clover doesnât have to worry about hell and back⌠which they donât mind his worrying itâs honestly they found it sweet and nice⌠that someone like him cares, but hard to comprehend at some points. Being a ghost is hard.
âYour grandad must really⌠hate Asgore.. Huh?â.Â
* âListen, these past few years have been chaotic and⌠the people that were lost⌠were the people we cherished⌠family and friendsâŚâ. They spoke. âWouldnât you want to honor those lost?â. Clover turned to look at Chara, some parts of the earlier conversation lingering in her mind, constantly thinking of it. There was no lying that everyone had a purpose, even them and wanted nothing to do but confirm that the first fallen had a purpose with their entire heart and looked back at Avark.Â
âIâve seen a lot of people being taken away from their families, what Iâm doing right now is⌠[Justice]â. They spoke trying to seem happy or trying to cheer this already sorta sat topic.Â
* âWell, youâre doing the best you can right now⌠here is all we need to grieve and keep moving on. We are all [DETERMINED]â. A chuckle was let out. * âChara was seen as the hope of all monsters⌠I hope you and the other humans can fulfill that and be the hopeâ. A grin on Cloverâs face grew wide, watching him walk away to one of the farms to help out another monster calling them for help. It was just nice seeing how this village works, honestly reminding the cowboy of the surface, just nice and peaceful.Â
Looking back at the apparition again walking over to them inching closer, seeming like they want to finish talking to them again. It was quiet between the two, both hesitant on saying something, looking away from each other, the air was just subtle awkwardness. The small conversation earlier was odd and a heavy topic. But it is currently eating away at them both. Clover holding back outright blurting it out and Chara feeling like they regret asking the question. At this point they just wanted the awkward silence to die alongside the history they have with monsterkind.
A small scoff was let out and the first fallen looked at Clover with a small offended look. âWhatâs funny?â.Â
âNothing nothing! I swearâ. Raising their arms up in defense. âJust thinkingâ.
âWas the thought funny?â.
âI guess,â. Â
âAlright, spill itâ. There was a small moment of hesitation before letting out a deep breath.
âI was just thinking back to the conversation before Avark interrupted, just about purposeâ. At that moment Chara wanted to curl up into a ball and disappear.Â
âOhâŚâ.Â
âWell, I was thinking about the mural and purpose⌠and I can say with my entire being that you do have one. Past or not!â. They spoke confidently. âYou have one alongside Frisk and me and I refuse to let you forget itâ. Staring at Chara intently, filled with sincereness. You could tell they cared a lot.Â
âYou really are the first person to talk to me,Clover⌠I donât mind that you want to be the one to help me and give me support butâŚâ. Chara stopped for a moment, taking a deep breath. âI donât want to burden you every time Iâm⌠troubled⌠wanting you to spend hours like this so be reassuring⌠I feel⌠ashamedâ. Slightly looking away.
âChar⌠you arenât a burden but I understand worrying about taking all of my time. I want to help you! Alright? But if you want to be left alone, Iâll give you space the best way I canâŚâ. Clover spoke, giving them a small reassuring smile.  Â
âItâs not really space, I just donât want to make you feel like you have to⌠be there,â.
âI want to help you, and again, Iâll try to give ya space and not seem overbearing as long as you donât go on your genocide tangents,â. They joked and the first fallen glared, punching their shoulder lightly letting out a small laugh.Â
âJerk,â.
âWorth it,â. A snicker was let out, the two leaned against the tree just relaxing until Frisk yelled at the two for slacking off and the cowboy was off helping out again leaving Chara alone again, their eyes watching them go off somewhere then back to the mural, letting out a soft sigh as their eyes going to the art of Asriel thinking about fixing the mess made Â
