Death polluted the ventilation from the scattered remains littering the stone tiles. Runoff licked violently at the grates below mixing in with the smell. Dim flickering fire sat within lanterns upon the mortared stone walls, giving off an sickly green glow. One could feel the large engraving of what appeared to be an eye staring deep into their soul when passing by. Some of the columns were simple debris while the rest stood strong or had been renovated. A soft crunch of a ribcage shattering under his foot caught Lexer off guard, he nearly latched himself onto the roofing.
7? was that how many flights of stairs he’d descended? He’d all but lost count by this point trying to ignore the burning sensation within his flexor muscles. Not even the rotting stench of the decaying bodies behind bars phased him. Curiosity constantly prickled his mind, evoking him to peak into each steel bared cell door, corpses or barely breathing creatures (hardly human or otherwise) were a recurring theme. I feel quite at home and completely out of place at the same time he thought. Someone so deathlike would have no issues fitting in with a blighted vault.
Lexer only found himself so deep underground after discovering a latched hatch beneath a lone rock. It’d been out of place only a few miles off from the place the patchwork now called home. Dragging his claws along the walls he left marks looking in all directions trying to decide which direction to go. The spook already knew he wasn’t alone... but he pondered if anyone was wondering the dungeon as freely as him.

An avatar to the dark spirit, Nox Caniculus, is created when someone so much as possesses the eye Lexer ripped from his skull an eternity ago. Nox was a cruel feral spirit that fed upon the flesh of his enemies indiscriminately of species. He believes that in the end, all things must return to the same void that birthed him. Only contains a fraction of his power.
Long before he had a name or self-awareness, Lexer was one of 5 created to serve a single function; contain a dark divinity. The patchwork was the last in the chain of experiments and possibly the most successful. Using runic magic and technology the creator was able to use the coat of arms of the demon to ensnare it within his puppet. The rune of Nox easily lured the spirit out of hiding, threatening to devour the mortal who dared steal from him.
With a great flash the rune, combined with runic technology, devoured the spirit and concealing it inside the rabbit like doll. This was when Lexer awoke for the first time. Overly curious the creature was slow and like a new born child had to adjust in increments to the world around him. He learned to walk first; he was not so stitched together back then, making it easy. When he came to an audible stage he was tutored in language and social interaction. Lexer was never told it’s true primary directive until a few years later when He had asked enough questions. ‘What am I?’ triggered the beginning.
“you are a culmination of my experiments” he was told, “ you are my greatest achievement, you are the key to ridding this world of demons and false gods, who would see us as pawns in their great plans.”
Not once did he come to the conclusion that he was intended for weaponization. Too lost in his chant of Narcissism was the creator to take notice of his blunders, he’d let his doll grow too aware. Lexer had begun questioning the creator’s words and sought out his own reason for existence. Being quite educated he took to reading until he came upon a certain book, a specific page with the rune of Nox, His right eye glowed a bright purple and he screamed in agony as the fourth pentacle of Venus burned into the iris and pulsated.
Whispers began to invade his mind driving him to the edge of his sanity. The symbol brought forth the rune to appear before the patchwork’s face blinding him as his body was torn asunder to reveal a swirling vortex that began to swallow everything in sight. The books, the walls, the fixtures, everything was swallowed except the creator, who had been away, and his lab.
Upon return the creator saw the devastation and was forced to use forbidden runology he’d learned eons ago to seal away the dark magic. As the magic faded the rag-doll ripped out the right eye that caused so much grief, allowing it to be swallowed with everything else. When the dark tremors of magic began to fade the creator found that his physical form was forfeit, now trapped in the book he once learned from. Lexer lay on the ground battered and torn. With his last amount of energy the creator used some of his power to weave his doll back together uttering an apology before he, himself, faded into dormancy along with what remained of the spirit concealed inside the patchwork.

((I'd really appreciate notes or even some help developing this character further!))
Several nights he laid there barren with that pusillanimous expression. A doll, simple as that, Patched together from varying in fabric and pigment. A single amber eye as his only window into the world surrounding him, the slime filled world were so many tragedies take place. How many times had he been used? How many times had he felt the painful bite of a reality that wasn't there? So many taken from him, so many failed attempts, all of it drove him to the brink of insanity. How absurd to think a doll could feel emotions as no one had equipped him with a heart.
Memories evanesced and he swore they were his. One moment he was Lexer, the animated ragdoll and elusive shadow, the next he was… someone completely different. Someone he couldn’t put a name or face to, all he could understand was the impression this person was absolutely him. As often as he fancied this he woke to a reality with no past. Each recollection a fabrication stemming from the monster doll’s yearning for the truth, a truth no one had for him. In retrospection there was something inside him horrifying; black enchantments of the arcane he refused to affirm. Many moons back a flair of force nearly destroyed Lexer. The patchworks stomach burst open with a blast of purple light rending open his stomach and nearly his chest cavity, decimating all in the path, ingesting it into a roaring vortex. Before his face a rune the same purple pigment glowed.
Upon waking he found his stomach stitched tightly shut. He’d blacked out and recalled nothing of the events prior to his torso tearing open. Puzzling more was how his laceration had sutured him shut to contain the atrocious sorcery. With new found knowledge the patchwork knew that however he was made or by whom, his conception was set to be a force of destruction. Loathing his new found ‘purpose’ he buried the memory in the hope no one would use him as he was intended. Deep down Lexer no longer valued his existence, as he was an abomination, yet part of him wished to exist.
