location: the white wyvern’s battle of the bands
participants: ian borgin & open ( @startertms )
"i think that was one of my best performances,” ian smirked as he stepped off of the stage, having already handed his guitar off to one of the stage crew. “but i suppose we’ll have to wait for the judges finally opinion,” this time he added a sigh to the end of his statement. he didn’t really care if he won or lost, he just enjoyed the attention that he gained from performing. "can i buy you a drink?” he asked as he turned towards his fan. “or several,” he added, this time with a wink.

oriana was, admittedly, a little tipsy. they were there to work, to try and capture some of the scandal that was bound to unfold. of course, they could always lie—which is what led to oriana, cup in hand and channeling their inner sybill. “five bucks or a drink and i’ll tell you how your nights gonna go.” they said. “whatever works best for you.”

She’s only meant to get a drink, straying from the company of one Justin Finch-Fletchley to find something to calm her nerves. The pub is quite full of people of all varieties, and while this generally helps in her feeling less like a stand-out and more like a face in the crowd, there’s still a bit of concern gnawing at the back of her mind. Solution? Some firewhiskey. Or honestly whatever the bartender will hand her first. And Justin’s company, of course, as he’s been a great friend for coming with her in the first place when he’s equally if not more uncomfortable being here. It’s as she’s stepping up the the bar that she knocks into someone, shoulders colliding, and apologies spill profusely from her lips as she rights herself. “Shit, Merlin, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean t--Oh.” It’s not that running into Greg here should be such a shocking thing. Hell, he’s more likely to frequent the place than she is in the first place. But it’s been quite a while since she saw him last and it’s not exactly been an absence that went unnoticed. Her cheeks immediately flush a bit and she looks down at her hands. “Hi.”
❝ TUNE UP YOUR INSTRUMENTS AND GET OUT YOUR FINERY - this week, the wix world positively hums with musical mirth ! if you’ve managed to score tickets to mozart’s greatest work, then one djamila shafiq would love to know how you got them, considering they’ve been going like hot cakes. a night at the opera with one lena nova is bound to tantalise even the most tone deaf ! on the other side of town, knockturn alley is playing host to the white wyvern’s first ever battle of the bands ! rumor has it that it’s come together at the last minute, but that shouldn’t stop you from getting out and supporting the local talent - just don’t leave your drink alone too long, and if you find more than your fair share of dubious stains in the bathroom, don’t bother reporting them to the staff. instead, toss a galleon to your local five - piece rock band, and do your best not to incense the bouncer. hit your high notes and gather up your guitars, you don’t want to miss out ! ❞
WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE :
MERLIN’S MUSIC HALL, DIAGON ALLEY : the magic flute was wolfgang amadeus mozart’s last major work to a german libretto by emanuel schikaneder, premiering just two months before his untimely death in 1791. tickets for what has come to be regarded as one of the greatest operas in history ( with world renowned opera diva LENA NOVA playing the demanding role of the queen of the night ) sold out several months ago and have been reselling at almost triple the price in the run up to its opening night, and for very good reason. merlin’s music hall hasn’t been booked for quite so significant an event since the passing of celestina warbeck ( an understandable downside to the on stage murder of the nation’s diamond ), and organisers have been promising a night that operagoers everywhere will never forget since managing to secure their week long run ! every available surface is gilded gold or swathed in the richest red velvet that you’ve ever seen, while costumed servers weave their way through a crowd expected to adhere strongly to the BLACK TIE dress code holding champagne bottles high. guests are encouraged to make their way to the private bar ( newly renovated with wall to wall mirrors and brand new and still as spindly as ever tables & chairs ) and avail of the complimentary drinks and delicious canapés arranged for the evening during the break between acts, though an intercom will announce when everyone best get back as quick and orderly as they can to their plush red chairs - there isn’t an empty seat in the house, and even the minister of magic and his beautiful wife have been tempted out for a night at the opera with private access to the hall’s largest balcony ( though flavia scrimgeour can be seen in her own, less impressive booth ).
THE WHITE WYVERN, KNOCKTURN ALLEY : the organisers of knockturn alley’s first annual battle of the bands weren’t actually aiming for it to be on knockturn, nor were they were expecting to be setting up their stage in the corner of the seediest pub that the offshoot of diagon alley had to offer them - but that’s just what happens when you leave booking your venue to the last possible minute ! ( rumor has it that a week ago, the leaky cauldron very politely declined hosting duties in favour of their WEEKLY bingo night, and the three broomsticks just couldn’t justify upsetting their elderly neighbours’ blissful sleep schedules when only a fraction of presale tickets actually sold ) with 70% of the evening’s profits going towards fees and the other 30% going towards ... less fortunate means, the event has been cobbled together out of thin air, but that shouldn’t dissaude any eager participants. the winners are promised a glittering trophy, a contract with the white wyvern for a regular gig schedule, and there’s even been a whisper of a HANDSOME sack of galleons up for grabs. grab a couple of friends, don your grungiest gear, and head out to the dodgy part of a town for a night that promises to be utterly unforgettable !
OUT OF CHARACTER :
this event officially starts sunday the 17th at 6pm gmt. click this link to see what that equates to for your timezone ! it’ll end on the 1st of may !
no character is required to attend either event, especially if you don’t consider any of them to be up their alley, but you’re encouraged to involve yourself as much as possible both to earn galleons and to ... enjoy the event, really !
i’ll make a category on the side discord for you guys to be able to rp there if you’d like to ( and outfit sections for anyone who might want to work on those ), but this was also envisioned as a dash event ! you aren’t required to pause any threads, as long as you make sure to tag appropriately.
event related starters ( including private ones ) can be tagged with nox.event025 if posted on the dash, with the added tags of nox.botb and nox.opera depending on which event your characters are attending ! the opera is on diagon alley, battle of the bands is on knockturn ( for people who tag location ) !
if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to send them to the main ! please like this post once you’ve read it !

"oi, scoot over-” first, she slides the drinks that she’s returned with onto the permanently sticky table that she and nellie had commandeered earlier that evening, making sure not to spill a single drop ( though she’s not sure that would be such a loss ; they look like two close estimations of the same fruity cocktail she asked for, but ginny’s not ENTIRELY sure the bartender of the wyvern had understood the assignment ). then, she uses her elbow to jostle the other along the unsteady bench until there’s just enough room for her fall down at their side. she makes sure to sit with her whole body twisted in their direction from the outset, all the better to talk shit in hushed tones about the grimy old man she’d encountered at the bar. “don’t look now-” she starts, knowing full well they’re going to take the first opportunity to glance over her shoulder no matter what she says to stop them, “but the guy in the middle - the one with the toupee - has asked me to ask you how we feel about heading back to his place and having ‘a bit of fun’. honestly, i thought he was JOKING...- but he told me to pass on that he’s more than happy to wear the maid costume, if neither of us want to.”

if niko has given anyone the impression of being an overtired father trying desperately to regain control of a long since spiralled situation, at any point tonight, then it’s only because that’s EXACTLY how he’s felt since leaving the opera with susan bones in tow. he had figured ( incorrectly ) that she would be easy to ditch upon arrival at the wyvern and what was more, had somewhat banked on it - his idea of a good night hadn’t included the dawning horror of watching the five foot two junior assistant to the minister of magic downing the line of shots he had kindly provided like they were water, but that was kind of hard to come back from. it was HIS fault they had ended up in this situation, and usually he would be fine cutting his liabilities and disappearing into the night, but he had a funny feeling that anton wouldn’t be best pleased if the last of the bones family turned up dead in a ditch. ergo : “susan,” he says, sternly, grabbing her by the elbow none too gently in an effort to keep her fully upright, flicking the remaining half of his cigarette away into the shadows of the wyverns back alley, “put your shoes on.”

“I’m afraid I’ve never been to the opera,” she admits, kicking the conversation off with an equal parts unsurprising and unhelpful bit of information. “So I suppose I’m not particularly sure what to expect. Other than that time--I’ve heard operas are quite lengthy, is that true?” This part was a bit of a lie, of course, or perhaps more of a lie of omission. Odessa had done her due diligence and looked into operas as a whole the same day her mother had mentioned this one in the first place; there was really no reason to be caught unaware at an event such as this one. Not when she could just do a bit of digging, ask around the right circles, and find out most of what she needed to know. Such as the fact that operas are, by nature of their very core, unbearably long. She’s not particularly looking forward to that bit, nor is she fully convinced she’ll stay the whole time. Perhaps slipping out at intermission to return home to her cat is the best option for everyone involved. Head turns to look at her companion curiously, awaiting a response.

to make a number of things very clear, from the get go : she wasn’t following him. yes, she had caught herself glancing across to his corner of the wyvern more than ONCE over the course of the evening ( which was very big of her to admit, she felt, when she could have said she was just admiring the scope of the event ) but no, she didn’t care about whatever was going on between him & pansy parkinson. who even cared that she was meant to be engaged ? not her. in fact, ginny would go so far as to say that she didn’t care at all that their few ( now much regrettable ) lapses in judgement had seemingly been forgotten weeks ago, and that she was far better off without having to waste her precious time wondering what EXACTLY had been going on between them, back when something sort of had been. it was obvious, now, that it was nothing. that was fine, and she was really happy to just ignore that he was even present, until ( through no fault of her own ), they actually came face to face.
she didn’t love it, but the truth was that while she really hadn’t been following him, there really wasn’t all that much truth to everything else. and - call it dutch courage running in her veins or, plain & simple, a really bad decision - when the door to the toilet she’d only idly been waiting on opened up to reveal him, ginny didn’t think half as deeply on the choice to jostle him back inside again just as quicly as she absolutely should have. it only takes a matter of seconds to make it in & lock the door again, behind them, but it’s clear how illthought out the whole thing is from the deep breath she takes and impressive buildup she gives only to manage, “hi.”
