Hi I just want you to know that this fanart is what made me decide to read the book, Iāve been hearing about it but something about the vibes in this one stuck with me and i went out and got it and iām halfway through its INTENSE

notpuckconnolly replied to your post āskatzaa replied to your post āskatzaa: EDANA DIDNāT DESERVE WHAT...ā
Honestly Malvern is kinda heartless about Mutt??? I never really think he was very fond of him- I doubt he'd be upset about his death. Like. He seemed perfectly functioning the day after the races when Puck goes to his house, he's not even mourning or anything.
Part of me was likeĀ āoh he would care exactly 0% in this situationā and theāre also part of me thatās like, if he had someone to blame in easy reach, would he have done... something? Just because he could?
(This was partly because my first thought for this AU would wasĀ āMalvern insisted that Edana be killed anyway, not so much because he lost his son, but more because he was offended by the concept of a horse eating his heir-apparent (well. Kind of heir-apparent? Something like that?).ā Entirely so we could have Sean somehow sneaking an entire horse out of Malvernās yard, because it appeals to me from a comic standpoint. So he returns having stashed an entire horse (um somewhere, I donāt know) likeĀ āokay yep done and done, I definitely killed the horse, thatās what I do, obey all orders,ā *cut scene to Puck awkwardly tossing a piece of meat to Edana in an undisclosed location* āDonāt think this means I like you or anything,ā she tells the horse. But she does, a little.)
(My first thought was, of course, the comical one. I just do that sometimes.)
Okay I have more AU musings, but theyāll be under the cut because... I am incapable of being concise.Ā
The point where I actually fall down for this whole AU is... in this AU, Sean would most likely win the race? Unhindered by the whole attack by Mutt, Corr isĀ faster than Dove, if heās really going all out. They make their move, most likely resulting in Sean and Corr finishing first and Puck and Dove a close second.Ā
Corr is uninjured, Sean has won the right to buy him (and has enough money, with at least part of the winnings from the race). Thereās a bit of money for second, but not enough to save the house. Which is... narratively unsatisfying for Puckās character arc? We donāt get her triumphant tea party with Malvern when she walks into his house and tells him exactly what heās going to do. She doesnāt get to slay her on monster there? Also, quite possibly she loses the house and Dove.Ā
(I mean, Malvern is... also Seanās monster but Mutt is his more immediate problem/antagonist right there at the end. In this AU, rather than Sean having an active role in Muttās final scene, itās Edana. Less a conflict between two people and more of a conflict of theĀ āyou screw with the ocean monster, it will screw with you right back, and itāll do it worseā variety. Which, by extension is basically āif you screw with the island and/or ocean, you lose.ā Which... works okay for me, honestly.)
Like, the closest I can come up with is that the money for second is enough for at least a... down payment? Of sorts? And Puck then tells Malvern sheāll work for him until the debt is paid off. But. I donāt like how much that still leaves her decisions in his power because I do like that both Puck and Seanās arcs conclude with them managing to claw some independence from Malvern.Ā
Also weād kind of be left with a lot of water horses in this AU. Corrās uninjured and Edanaās alive (and unmoved and whatnot, if we ignore my initial first idea, which, letās face it, was rife with holes), Skataās still on land too. Which, an advantage to that, I guess, is that Malvern will still needĀ Sean around to manage the water horses, because basically nobody else can? Given that, as far as we see, thereās nobody who has ever operated as Seanās second. The only person willing to hold Corr, and to do so competently, after he kills David Prince is Puck, and she has literally just come onto the scene. Heās still technically invaluable that one month of the year, even if, having won his independence, heās no longer racing for Malvern. Making do without Sean would be infinitely less profitable than keeping him on, if that were an option, especially with all those water horses around. (And nobody to ride them. Skataās malevolent and most people canonically wonāt touch her once Sean said it was a bad call, and in this AU Edana is a man-eater). So maybe something could be done with that, but I donāt know what.Ā
Basically what Iām struggling with is finding a way to let Puck have her story without winning the race and... Iām coming up blank. I suppose she could offer to ride Edana for Malvern in the next year if he takes her on as a groom/rider/etc? But. Again, not really narratively satisfying.Ā
What a web Maggie Steifvater has woven that I genuinely cannot see a way for things to end with both our main characters earning independence, besides the way it does in canon. (That or Iām just dully canon-adherent and therefore incapable of creative AU solutions.)
notpuckconnolly replied to your post āhi how do I find a riding instructor?ā ātry different ones and see...ā
Riding instructors tend to come out around dusk. Depending on the type you need, you may need to do a bit of travelling- western trainers prefer the more northern climates, in woods near civilization. Hunter trainers, however, can be found scavenging the rubbish bins around the local malls.
I've been thinking about this for a while now-what do you think Thisby is like this time of year? Does Palsson's have special summer treats? Does the humidity in the air feel thick like a layer of honey in a November cake, stretched across the island? Is everyone lazier than usual from the heat? Or does it just rain all the damn time so people can't wait for summer to end, even if that means it's murder horse time? I'd like to know your mind on this š-Suri
OH A HUNDRED TIMES YES! I think about it so much, but nothing I could come up with would come close toĀ @notpuckconnollyās ICONIC Thisby Summers post, which you absolutely MUST READ and can find HERE! :)

OH LORD I CANāT WITH PEG!!! (See all that here.)
All the people I ship romantically with this character: HER OWN DAMN HUSBAND WHO IS POSITIVELY DECENT FROM WHAT I CAN TELL ANDNOTGABE.
My non-romantic OTP for this character: See, I want her to be a good mother figure to Puck, but most of the time sheās not so good at it? I ship Peg and her butcher knife. I ship Peg and Father Mooneyham and his fancy red car, because I wonder what they have to talk about and, also, he seems pretty cool with this terrifying woman just driving him around the countryside for all to see when most men of his age and position probably wouldnāt have been back then. And, finally, I ship Peg and her bird costume (RIP), which, like all things on Thisby, met with a bittersweet end (the feathered cloak bit redeems Peg to me, if Iām honest).
My unpopular opinion about this character:Ā I really want to love her because she is such a strong and intriguing woman who seems pretty empowered despite living in a patriarchal society, but I find myself liking her less and less. I guess she has a good arc, in that she finally seems to understand what Puck is doing at the end, but Iām wary of her and her advice (and thatās not even getting into the affair, which is probably also an unpopular opinion: I believe that it did happen off-pageā¦I couldnāt unsee it if I triedā¦and Iāve tried). Ā
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: That she would have been more supportive of Puck, although I suppose it is more realistic the way it is. And even though itās not technically canon, that PEG HAD NEVER SEDUCED GABE.
3. do you prefer truth or dare or would you rather?A āwould you ratherā question where āwould you ratherā is one of the options⦠interesting. My sister and I developed this fun game calledĀ ātruthā which is just truth or dare except youāre both too lazy to do the dares, so that, I guess? (My preferred method of acquiring dares is for someone, in any part of my daily life, to in anyway imply in any way that I canāt do something. Then next thing you know, Iām clambering up the hardest rock-climbing wall at camp with a vengeance. Or enrolled in seven classes instead of five.)
5. whatās the last text you sent? This answer is a bit boring. I texted one of my housemates about cleaning.
13. do you have any phobias?Iām still edgy around spiders, which vexes me terribly because I live in CANADA, our spiders could not hurt me if they tried.Ā
2. have you ever found a writer who thinks just like you? if so, who?Hmm⦠in a way no, in a way several? There are lines from Maggie Stiefvaterās various works that resonate to an actually distressing degree⦠but some of those are characters where I think Iām resonating more with the character than with the author specifically? Iāve had similar experiences with characters written by Mackenzi Lee, Holly Black, and Jane Austen (of all people).Ā
7. do you care about your ethnicity?Hmm⦠Iām a Canadian citizen descended from European immigrants who arrived quite a few generations ago so⦠insofar as I do my best to be aware of colonial legacies and the harm inflicted by Europeās big colonialism kick back in the day, yes? But not much beyond that. Iāve never been to any of the countries my ancestors are from, I donāt think⦠oh. Wait. I have been to England and I think at least one of my ancestors is English? (Iām not a huge fan of British cuisine, if that makes a difference. I canāt even eat most of it because of the gravy and lard and thingsā¦)
11.Ā describe your ideal day.I could make a Miss CongenialityĀ joke but Iām going to be serious. But I want you to know I resisted the temptation because I want credit for that. Hmm. I havenāt been to a stable in⦠a year so probably that? Even just doing chores, I have weirdly fond memories of scrubbing algae out of a water trough, because Iām that kind of a person. And then probably just reading. Fantasy or sci-fi or natural history, probably. Make dinner, something with tomato and cheese because I am a simple creature that basically lives off of tomato-and-cheese-based foods. (Lately Iāve been wanting to travel again partly because I want to go back to the Natural History Museum in London but⦠thatās more than a day, and at the moment I think Iād take the stables over that.)
