Part 3
You fall easily into a routine over the next couple days. You had work of course but after you would go straight back to the Hargreeveās house to be with Klaus. Ā You offered to let him stay at your place but he brushed you off and made a poor excuse about needing to be near his family right now. You secretly thought that he just liked having a place to call his own and being able to take care of you instead of the other way around. You were happy to oblige him.
You had also gotten to know his siblings a little since you were around so much. You basically tried to avoid Luther after your first meeting. But Diego and Allison were nice and would make polite conversation at meals. They both seemed surprised that Klaus had a more long-term friend, which you couldnāt decide if you were insulted by or not. Five was strange. Klaus tried to explain his situation, but you just couldnāt wrap your head around it. Vanya wasnāt around much, but she seemed sweet.
Out of all of them Diego seemed to be the most to your liking. It seemed like he actually gave a shit about his brother, unlike some of the others. He always tried to include you in conversations and in general wasnāt a dick, though you noticed some underlying anger issues, but he seemed to have them under control. Despite his vigilante knife throwing he seemed to have his life together, which you appreciated.
Finally you had a day off. Your first in 6 days and you planned to spend it with Klaus, in bed, all day. So thatās what you did. You two were lying in bed. Your head was in his lap and he was flopped back against the wall. Your fingers were intertwined with his and he was telling you about all the crazy stuff that had been going on recently; Fiveās reappearance, Reginaldās possible murder at the hands of one of his siblings, going to look for the owner of a prosthetic eye and most crazy the apocalypse! You were listening, of course, but it was a lot to process and you started to space out, focusing instead on the cadences of Klausās voice, how animated it was. His normal talking range was much larger than most peoples. He would start a sentence in a low tone then half-way through heād put emphasis on a random word by making it higher than the others. You loved listening to it. It was like music. And you loved the way he used his hands to communicate as much as his voice, waving them about to gesture dramatically. Because your hands were connected, your hand got pulled into the current frantic gesturing, but neither of you wanted to let go. You didnāt mind, in fact you kind of liked it. You could feel Klausā energy through your connection like a wire.
ā-how could he think that? I mean, yeah, we all hated him, but still?ā You tuned back into Klausā actual words and realized you had missed a bunch cause you had no idea what he was asking. He seemed upset though. He let both your hands fall back on to the mattress with a hefty thump and exhaled loudly. You didnāt know what to say, but Klaus didnāt stay quiet long enough to notice you had missed what he was saying.
āDiego gets it, Luther can be such a dunce sometimes!ā
āSecondedā you chime in, finally following the conversation. Klaus chuckles, remembering your incident with his brother a few days ago.
āYou know they got into a fight at Dadās funeral? I endorsed it, but stillā
āOh? Who won?ā you ask, a grin spreading across your face.
āDiego!ā He answered, mildly shocked.
āWell he does have the shik shiksā you make a throwing motion with your hands.
A loud burst of laughter erupts from Klaus āYeah, yeah exactly!ā Ā
You smile at his reaction, happy you could make him laugh with your mediocre jokes. Before Klaus can continue a buzzing comes from the side table, where your phone was. You groan, the only people who call you are work and your mom, and you didnāt want to talk to either of them. You pick up your phone, with one hand. Klaus wouldnāt let go of the other.
āWho is it?ā he asks, peeking over at your phone screen.
āWork.ā You groan again and then answer. āHello?ā
Klaus canāt hear the person on the phone, but he knows you seem upset.
āNo, Jamie, I canāt todayā You stand up and start pacing around the room. Klaus doesnāt let go of your hand and trails behind you like a sad puppy. He was looking forward to spending the day with you. He didnāt know what he would do if you had to go; probably get high.
āYes reallyā You sounded exasperated. Klaus knew work was important to you but he was glad that you were fighting to stay with him. No one else ever did that.
You sighed and tilted your head back to the ceiling, closing your eyes. Klaus squeezed your hand in support and you squeezed back in acknowledgement.
āFine! Just a couple hours, and you owe meā You practically yelled into the phone. Klausā face fell and he dropped your hand. You hung up the phone and looked over at him, noticing the sudden lack of connection. He looked like a kicked puppy. His eyes were wide and sad. His shoulders slumped and his face was tilted downward. As soon as you saw it you wished you could go back and tell your boss to fuck off. āKlaus⦠Iām sorry, I have toā
The second you try to address the situation, the vulnerability in his eyes and body language vanish replaced by a poorly constructed mask of humor.
āI know, you gotta bring home the bacon, make that bread, get that cheddaā His words were funny but his tone was dejected. Ā
āKlausā¦ā the apology in your voice was subtle but still very much there. You reach out to touch his arm, but he turns away and waves you off.
āItās fine, itās not like Iām not used to itā He flashes a fake smile at you. The casual way he says this breaks your heart. Heās so used to being left behind and over looked that he doesnāt notice when he does it to himself. He sits back on the bed and picks up his head phones. He looks them over before he places them on his head, like he canāt decide whether he wants to or not. You give him another apologetic look and gather your things. You shut the door quietly behind you as you leave the room.
This sucks. You know why Klaus was upset, and it upset you too. You wanted to be there for him, and youāve already worked so much this week. You deserve some time off and you wanted to spend it with Klaus. But you couldnāt just leave your boss hanging when they have two no-shows, not if you wanted to keep your job. You were so lost in thought you werenāt really paying attention to where you were walking until you hit something or someone turns out. Diego was standing in the hallway and you had just run into him.
āHey watch o-ā he started to say, but then he noticed your slumped shoulders, the strange look in your eye and the bag you were carrying his tone softened. It was strange to see you around the manor without Klaus. āY/N? Are you ok?ā
You shook your head in frustration and pushed past him to continue down the hallway. He followed you, not saying anything, but not willing to leave you alone like this. āDiego, please just go away, its nothingā
āItās not nothingā He was right and it pissed you off. You stop dead in your tracks and turn to face him.
āNo, your right itās not nothing, but I donāt have time for this, cause I have to work on my day off!ā Ā Before Diego can answer you walk through the front door and slam it behind you.
Ā Klaus leans back against the wall and closes his eyes. He doesnāt know why heās surprised. Everyone always has something better to do. And he is left alone with the ghosts. Ā He thought you were different, thought you would fight for him, but apparently not. Music blares through his headphones, but it doesnāt completely drown out the distance screams and calls of his name. He shakes his head trying to clear his thoughts and banish the wails of the dead. But of course he canāt. He never can. They are always there. Always screaming. He just wants some damn peace and quiet. He hits the bed in frustration. Y/N made it quiet. No one had ever done that before. With you around, he didnāt hear the ghosts as much. Your laugh drowned them out. But now Y/N was gone, just like everyone else. No one wanted him around, his siblings especially, even though he tried his best to be funny and charming, the life of the party. But when the party of was over everyone went their own way and he was left with no one. Except the ghosts. Heād rather have no one.
Ben appeared in front of him, breaking his train of thought. āYou should go after themā
āand do what? Make a scene at the bar? Then theyāll never come backā
āWell you canāt just sit here and wallowā Ben was frustrated. He wanted to help Klaus, he wanted to go explain to Y/N what was the problem and that Klaus needed them, but he couldnāt. He was stuck here with Klaus and he could do nothing. āyou have to do something!ā
āI think Iām gonna take a bathā Klaus said, a hint of snark in his voice.
Ā Ā You were frustrated all through your shift; So much so that you almost yelled at a customer. When you were finally done it was so late it was early. You were tired and hungry and hoped that Klaus would forgive you. You hoped he knew that you werenāt ever going to abandon him. You hoped he knew that you loved him.
You practically ran back to the Hargreeveās house. Finally the large building came into view around the corner. As you approached the door, you became very nervous. What if he didnāt want to see you? What if he wasnāt there?
Usually you just walked right in, but with what happened with Klaus, and Diego, you thought it would be better if you knocked. Pogo answered the door.
āAh, Y/N, now it not the best time, there has been an incidentā He seemed hesitant to tell you what had happened, but he didnāt need too. As you looked past him you saw the chandelier laying on the floor of the foyer. You push past Pogo and gape at the sight.
āWhat happened?ā you ask, as you stare up at where the metal had been attached to the ceiling. Diego enters the foyer from the side. His presence manages to tear your gaze away from the metal husk lying in the middle of the floor.
āThere was an attack.ā He says plainly
āWhat?!ā your dumbfounded. Who would be attacking the Umbrella Academy? For what purpose?
Diego seemed to anticipate your questions āSome people in creepy masks came in with guns and more skill than we could handle. Who knows what they wanted, but theyāre gone nowā
āThatās insaneā Your mouth seemed to speak for you. Finally your brain processed what he was saying and your thoughts shot forward, making up for lost time. āHow did this happen? Is everyone alright? Klaus? Where is Klaus?ā the words flowed out of you like an avalanche and you needed the answers desperately. Ā
āEveryoneās good. I havenāt seen Klaus, but he wasnāt in the fight, so Iām sure heās fineā Diego somehow managed to answer your bombastic panic with calm assurance, which you were grateful for. It didnāt subdue the swell of panic rising in your chest though. You did your best to remain civil.
āWell, Iām gonna go look for himā You pat Diego on the arm as you walk by. You take the stairs two at a time. It took all of your restraint not to sprint full speed to Klausā room.
You tried to push the panic down as you reached the top of the stairs and turned the corner into the hallway. You could feel it coursing through your veins. Is this what being high feels like? Klaus. Klaus is dead. No. Heās fine. Thereās going to be so much blood. Klaus is fine. You fidget with the strap of your bag as you walk down the hallway. Klaus is dead. NO! Your feet move quicker, picking up the pace. Thatās why no one knows where he is. He goes off on his own a lot. Itās not unusual for people to not know where he is. Thatās a big coincidence. Heās dead. Blood. Dead. Gone. Youāll never see him again. Klaus is DEAD! Panic takes over you and you break into a sprint. Running down the hallway, your heart pounds in your throat. You skid past his door, but manage to throw it open.
āKLAUS!ā You really do expect to see Klausā body slumped on the floor, bullet holes riddling his thin frame, blood covering the walls, but the room is empty. The same as you left it; no blood, no body, but no Klaus either. You grasp the door frame as your body is flooded with relief. You almost fall to your knees but manage to stay standing. You still didnāt know where Klaus was or if he was ok. You pant heavily as you try to focus on your surroundings. Klausās room looks normal. It has writing coving the walls and Klausā wardrobe covers the furniture and the floor. Ā Nothing seems more disheveled than when you left, so it seems unlikely that there was a struggle here. That was good. You do notice however that there is a scrap of paper on the nightstand that looked newly placed. You pick it up. Itās a note from Klaus. You sigh in relief as you recognize his hand writing.
Y/N,
Iām sorry about earlier. Come join me in the tub ;)
Klaus
As you read the note you let the news of the attack and your panic fade away. Klaus forgave you. Your heart fluttered in your chest and suddenly you were nervous to see him. You needed to tell him how you felt; needed him to know, even if it wasnāt reciprocated. He deserved to know someone cared for him.
You would have lived in that world of young love and butterflies forever, but reality came crashing down hard as you reached the bathroom to find the tub empty, of Klaus and of water. All of your panic came surging back. He said he would be here, but heās not. Something must have happened. But thereās no blood. He must have gone somewhere else, but where and why wouldnāt he get rid of the note if it wasnāt relevant any more. In your panicked state you took in a the details, the missing towel, the water and suds on the floor, the discarded headphones, but your brain couldnāt process them, couldnāt make out what it all meant. Ā
You were shaking as you walked down the stairs and into the living room, looking for someone, anyone, to help. Diego was lying on the couch, fiddling with his knives, when you walked it. You shuffled over to the couch and fell to your knees in front of him. Diego looked over at you in confusion and sat up. You were still shaking.
āY/N? Whats wrong?ā
You couldnāt answer. You just shook your head and proffered Klausā headset. Diego looked at it then back at you. Ā He put his hands on your shoulders, holding you steady.
āY/N, what happened, what is itā The concern in his voice was more than noticeable. It helped you to know you werenāt the only one that cared.
You finally managed to find your voice again āHeās goneā The shock and panic in Diegoās face made you realize your poor choice in words. You continued. āHeās not here, but he left thisā you indicated the headphones. Ā āI think they took him Diego, the people who attacked the houseā
Diego sighed in relief at your explanation āHe probably just went out, Y/Nā
āNo, no, he left this note tooā you rummaged around your pockets until you found the note and held it out to Diego. āWhy would he leave this if he wasnāt going to be here?ā
He took the note, and read it rolling his eyes. āYou know Klaus, always making stuff up as he goes⦠he probably just⦠forgot about itā His brow furrowed, as if he really didnāt believe his own words.
āWe need to look for himā You said, suddenly certain of your choice.
āI think you should go home, Y/N, get some rest. Heāll probably be back in the morningā
āYouāre no helpā You exhale, exasperated. Standing, you brush off Diegoās grip. You start to walk away, but stop and turn back to Diego. āIām going to look for him, with or without your helpā
Diego hesitated for a few seconds, then sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. āFine, lets goā
