Don’t need big brand names
Hey all, so i’ve kind of been seeing/ reading some negativity about products that people use for their cosplays, props etc like “why don’t you buy worbla? It’d look better” or “why don’t you use copic markers instead a cheap ones?”
Just so you know, you don’t have to spend hundreds of thousands of $$$ on materials for cosplay. I mean if you have the funds then by all means go for it but for others, like myself who do cosplay on a retail managers salary and take care of a family, I can’t afford 80$+ of a roll of Worbla.
You can easily get the same if not close to the same results using cheaper materials. Plus, isn’t that what cosplay is about? Finding crazy awesome materials that you wouldn’t normally think about using?
That’s one of the reasons why I love cosplay! You can think outside the box and really let your creativity out! I’ve been dumpster diving for materials before, I hit up thrift stores, garage sales, antique shops and all kinds of other places. You can find some really awesome and unique stuff and materials that way.
You also don’t need to worry so much about the “brands” you’re using/ what store you got your fabric from. Walmart has just as good fabric as JoAnn’s and Hobby Lobby and sometimes it’s WAY cheaper!
Art supplies don’t need to cost you an arm and leg (Fullmetal Alchemist reference anyone?) Again, if you have the $$$ go for it, and yes, I would love some Copic markers and Prismacolored pencils but right now I can’t afford them so instead of putting myself in debt, i’ll get cheaper ones. You can easily make that Pikachu drawing look good with some Crayola colored pencils and make people think you used some expensive brand.
It’s not about who can use the most expensive materials for their art. It’s about creating, having fun, and challenging yourself. Plus wouldn’t it be just as cool if someone came up to you in awe about how you made your Kirito swords and you tell them you made them from foam board and fencing posts. Like how cool does that sounds?!
And before people start saying, “you’re just bashing people because you’re jealous you can’t afford any of it!” I am by NO means bashing anyone that can afford and use Worbla or any other expensive material because let’s face it, that stuff can be a BEAST to work with!! This is mainly for the people who are still new to making cosplays and who think they absolutely HAVE to have expensive materials to make their *insert crazy complex, armor wearing character here* when they can start out using things like EVA foam or craft foam.
Cosplay and art are a form of creativity. Don’t stress yourself and let your poor wallet keep it’s food. Ain’t nobody like a sickly looking wallet and believe me, your bank account will thank you. Plus, it gives you more $$$ for the actual convention and tacos....and let’s face it, who doesn’t like tacos?
