Be careful, Louise. Monsters never look like monsters.
It was something STUPID, too. Some stupid worry, something she now has forgotten as she stares down to her itching burning searing arm. ( Gosh, GOD, itâs HOT OUTSIDE. sheâs normally in a cardigan or long sleeves but itâs HOT in New York already and her windows are open and sheâs just in a HARVARD LAW teeshirt unironically. a friend over, talking, no danger, nothing to worry about. )
Duke is EXTRAORDINARY. She knew that. ( she was extraordinary, once. she knows, knew, how it feels, she thought. ) Duke can do the impossible, has done it for her, for her stupid ideas. It doesnât need to be life and death always, right? It shouldnât be.
He isnât SCARY. He doesnât wear a gun and show her that heâs armed. He doesnât threaten international action. He doesnât talk about her sister like he wants something.Â
He just. Is.
Louise was making lunch. ( Sunday, after Mass, the sun is high in the sky and glinting off of the precious metal brand on her upper arm. ) She has enough of her wits to reach with her non-injured arm to turn her stove off.Â
âDuke.â Throat tight, sheâs looking at him now, tears welling. Scared, panicking, still, genius brain piecing together the disparate bits he had left around. Sheâs not moving, wonât move. He did this, heâs the one who needs to fix it.Â
( at least, fix it before it spreads to the rest of her. )
fanfic writer tag
I was tagged by the lovely, the joyful, the bodacious @ironfamjam đ
1. Whatâs your favourite genre to write? angst wangst no for real though I vacillate wildly between mindless crack and heart-crushing angst. I love emotional whump and two characters (e.g. Peter and Tony) finding out something very sad from each otherâs pasts but being there for each other...as well as admiring them even a little bit more. I love to write...subtle emotions, yâknow?
2. Do you pull inspiration from real life, or do you pull things from other books/fanfiction youâve read? Way way wayyy too much personal inspo. My coauthor Daisy (notapartytrick) knows this đ Deaf Harley canon? Deaf myself. Trans Peter? Trans myself. Character almost died drowning? ...you guessed it, I almost drowned myself.
3. Do you tend to write one-shots, short stories, or longer things? I think the length of the stuff I post would usually be called short stories--theyâre one-shots in terms of not bearing the traditional discernible âstory arcâ or a lot of structure from start to finish, but in terms of length (4-9k) they would be classified as long short stories, according to my literature background. Occasionally I throw in novellas (3-5 âactsâ or âmovementsâ amounting up to 30k). I usually run out of manic inspiration if I plan and start a fic longer than 30k.
4. Do you prefer to write description or dialogue? Dialoooooogue. I used to write purple prose when I was a teenager. Nowadays, I feel like I get my characterization across more effectively with dialogue. As an unconscious rule, I only focus on description if itâs a necessary transition between two scenes with very different tones, or I have a poetic passage I absolutely want to include, or itâs very important to me to describe a characterâs facial expressions and/or secret feelings.
5. Favourite fic/book of all time? I canât name my favorite fic, thatâs just not fair đ My favorite non-fandom book would have to be Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton, though.
6. Favorite Trope? It varies from day to day đ Atm I am super into fics where Peter struggles to adjust to living again and seeing how May and/or Tony have âmoved onâ with their lives after 5 years of him being dusted. Alternatively, I am a slut for those oneshots where Tony gets married and Peter acts like a man whoâs seen his gallows because he thinks this is the end of his relationship with Tony (and then Tony realizes what perfect idiots they are that donât know how to communicate). I also highly enjoy the Mayâs Abusive Boyfriend trope (I have a half-written WIP for it shhh), though I gotta say that I look for something specific when I read those fics. I want them to really slow-build the tension and sucker punch me with emotions at the end.
7. Are you the kind of person to work on more than one WIP? Accidentally, yes. I tend not to post simultaneous long WIPâs because I only write longish fics out of a manic and single-minded obsession. However, I do have a couple of unpublished and half-finished one-shot WIPâs (estimated to be like 4-6k long each) that I am pegging at away slowly and just need the right mood to sit down to and sprint to finish.
8. How long have you been writing? For fiction/poetry in general, for 16 years (since I was 8). For fandoms, since I was 12. I wrote extensively for Percy Jackson and the Olympians, took a college hiatus, and then jumped into ao3 with Phan (Dan Howell/Phil Lester) fics and Iron Dad. Iâve been writing for Iron Dad since the summer of 2018, and itâs the fandom Iâve written the longest and the most number of words so far đ
9. Do you tend to write more in the morning, afternoon, or evening? my brain is a godless bastard that respects no sun, no moon and no clock. Iâm writing any time at all that Iâm not working, studying or teaching. So that means in my office, on my phone while Iâm on the bus, over lunch, on my phone in bed...and thinking of dialogue when iâm on the toilet or in the shower or...you get the idea đ
10. Do you prefer to post and update your WIP chapter by chapter or wait until itâs 100% complete before sharing it? I am an insecure lil binch that lives and breathes on instant validation. I need to post the first part right away and then sit there obsessively refreshing the page till I see the first comment pop up and then I squeeze my cheeks with so much happiness I feel like Iâm gonna die. The only exception is when Iâm coauthoring--with 5 Times Tony Hesitated to Touch Peter and 1 Time He Didnât, Daisy and I finished 5 out of the 6 chapters first before we started posting twice a week, so we had a 3-week time allowance to wrap up the last chapter đ
I enjoyed this so much,,, ahhh thank you!! Now imma tag @blondsak @floweryfran @snarky-drabbles @spiderman-peterman @dragonbano @goldkirk @liz-a-bell @alice-in-ink @tonystarkstan @aihoshiduo @sallyidss @spideyfic @emeraldmoon @abyssal-glory if you so desire and/or if you havenât been tagged yet <3
