"Could be worse. We could be killed."
"Utterly insufferable." Jeff grumbled, trudging through the shallows, dragging a half-drowned and still cursing Jedi out of the water. Above them, Chaos Company continued in their task to blow out the bridge. It would take a lot of rope to get the General out of the ravine, but that would probably be much easier than it was to drag him out of the water.
"Shut up." Came the equally exasperated reply. Asraiāev was not happy with the current predicament. He would be happy later that he wasnāt missing half his face. Faulty explosives and bridges typically didnāt make for a good day. Falling into the water from such a height had only added to the nightmare. The lake had been cold, desolate⦠with unfathomably dark depths. It reminded him of places and events heād rather not think about.
"Iām not in the mood. Rookie mistake, letting their commander handle unchecked explosivesā¦" The Sith wasnāt usually one to fault anyone. These however were special circumstances. It was almost like today was āeveryone be a blockheadā day, and Jeff had missed the memo."And you! I know you hate water but didnāt anyone teach you how to follow your bubbles up?" He took the time and care to set the Jedi down on the shore and began looking him over.
"Quit complaining." Asraiāev sighed, doing his best to scowl at his savior. āCould be worse. We could be killed."āWhat? Killed? Hah! Youāre far too stubborn to die, and Iām far too stubborn to let you even make the attempt." Jeff laughed as he checked the taller man over for injuries from hitting the water. He didnāt miss the incredulous look on Asraiāevās face.
"Oh donāt you even." The Sith sighed, shaking his head. āI just saved your life, twice, in a row - and youāre still trying to paint me as the monster hiding under the bed?"Ā
His whole life, heād gotten the role of ānot threateningā and now someone decides to treat him like he could go berserk at any moment? The irony. āLook, Iām going to let you in on a little secret. Iāve always been this way. I wasnāt going to change for the Emperor, and I am not going to change for you. So youād better learn to deal with the facts."
For the first time in (as far as Jeff knew) a while, Asraiāev smiled. He would have laughed, but the thought made his lungs hurt.Ā "I suppose thanks are in order - but donāt expect me to believe you so readily about that."Jeff rolled his eyes and pinched one of Asraās cheeks gently.Ā "Youāre welcome, you stubborn man."
