Ashley pulled her knees up to her chest, still as a statue, as if she were being stared down by the cannibalistic wendigo. She had made it out of the lodge, and all was quiet, eerily so. She was vaguely aware of the presence of another person around her.
A high-pitched and gut wrenching scream sounded from within the building, sending shivers down Ashley’s spine. Instinctively, she looked up, staring at the open door.
It was almost as if everything was in slow motion. The blast was so horribly loud that she had to cover her ears. They still began to ring despite the coverage.That high pitched screeching was unrelenting.
Ashley watched as the wooden building was swallowed by the flames. No one else had come out.
Her mind went immediately to a single name. Chris. She began to look around wildly, he had been right behind her out of the lodge, but there was that terrible fear that he hadn’t made it.
“Chris!” She called out, eyes watering further from the intense inferno that was formerly the lodge. “Oh God,Chris, please!” It sounded to her like she was underwater. The incessant ringing in her ears refused to cease.
