Hey! Hi. Hope you are doing well.
I saw a post you made a couple of days ago about how @ someone while using their gif on a post is not properly crediting them. If it's ok with you could you please help me understand why.
I'm not a gif maker myself and I have a lot of respect and love for gif makers like you. I just want to understand why it is not acceptable so I can do better in the future (I don't mean I won't credit properly if I don't understand why. What I'm trying to say is I'm just curious and would like to understand)
Sorry if it didn't make any sense. And please Ignore if u don't want to answer.
[For context Anon is refering to this post.] Hello dear Anon. Thank you for asking and I understand where you're coming from, so I will try to explain how I feel about it at least, can't speak for other people. So I guess technically putting the blog's name is to give credit but to me that's not really the right way to do it. Specially if you don't do it with a hyperlink. Before anything else let me tell you what I mean. (I just made these cause I don't really wanna involve other folks in this)
I've seen it done these two ways recently. Basically in this case a user reposted the gif and technically gave credit but in one of those they didn't even bother to link to the blog, they just put the name. They aren't claiming they made it and they do mention the blog but they also aren't linking to the gif maker, or the post itself. And it's laziness, if nothing else.
You don't wanna lose hours on gif search, fine. That's a terrible excuse as I said in my post but whatever. But if you really want the path of least resistance and you know the gif you wanna use you can just copy and paste it and it will retain credit. Like this.
Right click on the gif, copy image link and then paste on your post. This is the easiest way to insert a gif that connects to the blog and the post where you got it from. You should still credit the creator with a @ because this way the gifmaker doesn't get notified. And if someone is using my gif I want to know cause I want to see what people are saying about the shows' I'm giffing. Just like with reblogs and comments and all the ways of engaging with each other, this is another one. I see someone used my gif, I go read the post, I usually reblog the post, and so on. And that's another way to connect.
Anyway, that's the simplest way to actually do it while linking to the post and giving credit at the same time.
And since we're on the subject I just wanna say a couple more things. First of all @respectthepetty has this wonderful post on how to insert gifs when you can't find it via gif search. But also, I do understand that gif search is a nightmare. There have been times where I simply gave up and made my own. But there are ways to make it easier. Look at the tags of the post that has the gif you want. Tags like #shownameedit with no spaces make it easier to find the gif you want. You can also use a gif maker's specific tags cause some of them have their own and that along with a show's name can narrow the options a bit. For some shows, like japanese and korean for instance, if you search with the original title, in the original language, you also get better results, specially if the name of the show has some common english words. Sure a lot of the time it's still trial and error and you will waste some time, but well, that's how it goes.
Like I said in my original post, I was having a shitty day so I kinda went off on this one thing and didn't really stop to think too much on it or even explain. I just needed to get it out I guess.
This got long Anon but I think I at least explained where I was coming from with my mini rant. Hope this all makes sense and thank you for this ask because I understand that not everyone is familiar with all the tumblr etiquette and it took me ages to learn and I did it by asking people that knew more than I did. Hope you have a wonderful weekend Anon.💜
