"Did you grab lunch with McGee earlier, before coming back to the office?"

"No, there was no time." Another gust of wind sent her hair flying in all directions. She groaned in frustration, wishing she had her NCIS cap, a scarf, anything... She glanced at Tony's tie, that would work. Tucking her hair behind her ears in an exercise of futility, she was about to ask him to borrow it, when he pointed at a coffee cart on their right.

"We can grab a snack there." He looked at her with a soft smile. "A five minute break between two leads won't make a difference."

She smiled back, grateful for a little physical reprieve. With half a dozen leads to go, it would be close to midnight before they would have a chance to sit down for an actual meal.

He ordered two chocolate donuts before she had a chance to give her order. Noticing her skeptical look after paying, and accepting the two donuts, he simply said, "live a little, Ziva."

She grabbed a handful of flailing curls and held them to one side, so she could get a better look at him as they walked away from the cart. "You think I do not know how to live?"

He stopped in his tracks, and licked his lips. "That's not what I meant." He handed her one of the donuts, as he bit down on the other and hummed in appreciation.

Another gust of air almost blew away the napkin holding her donut, and she reflexively let go of her hair to grab it.

In between wisps of hair, she could see Tony take another huge bite of his donut, his eyes sparkling, as she twisted and turned against the wind in an effort to keep her mouth free long enough to take a bite without getting chocolate in her hair. Or hair in her mouth. Or just-

"I meant you should enjoy the little things in life more. "He wolfed down the remainder of his donut, cleaned his hands on his napkin, and told her to stand still.

She did, without giving it much thought, too focused on the food that was right there in her hands, yet so unattainable. But then he stepped closer, and gently gathered her unruly curls in his hands, holding them back as he gave her that soft smile again.

For a moment she forgot the hunger and discomfort, feeling safe and comfortable in the closeness of her partner.

The corners of his mouth quirked upwards, and that sparkle returned to his eyes. "Little things, like eating a chocolate donut while the smartest, funniest, most handsome partner you've ever had protects you from a tornado."

She chuckled, and his smile widened in response, the way it always did when he realized he had made her laugh. The butterflies that appeared in her stomach reminded her of how hungry she was. She took a bite of her donut, and briefly closed her eyes at the first taste of chocolate.

When she opened them once more, he was watching her intently.

"You know what we should do tonight, assuming Gibbs allows us to leave?"

She took another bite, and licked her lips, while raising an eyebrow in question.
