You do realize that when a earthquake strikes, it isn't usually followed by a potenial tsunami [on that same location]? There was a tsunami in Cali when a 9.2 earthquake struck in Alaska. When Japan had a 9.0 earthquake, California did get tsunami damage. Notice the epicenter of the earthquake are in a different location than cali [that had an ocean between point a and b]? Tsunamis [when triggered by earthquakes, major landslides, etc] need time to travel and grow stronger in the ocean until they hit land. [I took an oceanography class on this, it was very interesting actually. But a lot of math :(]

Unless you are implying that an earthquake happened somewhere else and it just so happened that a tsunami arrives to Cali when a "cali style" earthquake occurs at the same time? Extremely unlikely.
