Happy Birthday Liz! I love you so much so hereâs a special little fic written just for you! @nostalgiamisha
So it turns out that the team building exercise with the maze was coming in more handy than anyone ever thought it would. Actually, it was the exact situation Keith and Lance found themselves in now, but there was a lot more at stake than just Lance getting shocked. In fact, Keith was incredibly worried. The two of them were supposed to go on a simple mission to collect some materials Coran needed for the castle, but now Lance was trapped, and it was up to Keith to get him out safely.
It was really Lanceâs fault. He was goofing off and didnât pay attention to where he was going and fell into a hole, of all things. They were on a rocky planet with endless canyons and mountains and they were warned beforehand that there were many hidden holes on the planet. It didnât help that the planet seemed to have a constantly shifting surface meaning that Lance couldnât get out the way he came. Luckily Pidge had recently installed mini BLIP tech sensors into their suits, so Lance was able to use that to create a map of the cave system below. The only problem was that Lance couldnât view his own map since the sensor was only programmed to send to other paladins; resulting in Keith having the only map.
Keith had just made it to the entrance of a nearby cave that seemed to be the exit to the mysterious labyrinth that lay below the planetâs surface. Here he would be able to gain access to the map and lead Lance out, but the boy trapped underground was more impatient than Keith was.
âKeith? Keith!â Lance shouted over the coms.
âCalm down, Lance. Iâm here. Thereâs no need to yellâ Keith responded.
For a second all Keith could hear was Lanceâs increasingly fast breathing before he finally responded, âIâm sorry but itâs pitch black down here. The suit lights help a bit, but itâs like the light is being absorbed by the blackness. I can hardly see two feet in front of me.â
âLance, itâs okay. Itâs just a little darkness.â
The paladin who never seemed to shut up was silent.
âLance?â Keith questioned.
More silence followed by a quiet, â...yeah?â
âAre you⌠okay?â
Keith could hear Lanceâs nervous laughter but it wasnât anything heâd heard from the boy before. âI gotta admit, Keith. Iâm afraid of the dark. This is kind of my worst nightmare.â
âOh,â Keith said in surprise. He didnât think Lance had any fears, but the way Lance was acting right now was all the proof he needed. âOkay, Iâm right with you Lance. Iâll get you out of there. I promise. Just focus on my voice, okay?â
âYouâre lucky you have such a nice one,â Lance muttered back.
Keith didnât respond; he was too busy trying not to blush. Just then, his suit beeped, letting him know the map was finally downloaded and ready to view. âOkay, I got the map. You ready to move?â
âOkay but last time we did this, you ran me into the walls multiple times.â
âThatâs because you didnât listen to me! Plus we got through it eventually. Besides, now we actually trust each other. We got this, okay?â
âFine, okay,â Lance sighed. âI trust you.â
âFirst thing, find the closest wall to you and walk two steps forward.â Keith begun.
âI swear if I run into a wallâŚâ Lance begun.
After the first few turns, Lance seemed to relax. Instead of questioning Keithâs instructions, he started cracking jokes. Keith could still tell that Lance was nervous, but it was nice to hear him acting more like his usual self. He slowly ran out of jokes and devolved into puns that had Keith rolling his eyes despite the smirk on his face.
âOkay, you can go straight here for about twenty feet.â Keith instructed
âHey Keith, what does Voltron use to earn more allies?â
âWhat?â
âPurr-suasion.â Lance giggled.
Keith gave no indication to how much he was enjoying these lame puns instead saying, âStop here. The path forks.â
âWhat kind of tea do you think Allura drinks?â
âTurn right.â
âAll-tea.â
That one got a short snort out of Keith, and he could practically here Lanceâs massive grin growing every second.
âOh Keith I got a really good one, made especially for you.â Keith was probably hallucinating but he swore he could see Lance winking at him despite him being eight feet underground. âWhy didnât you accept being the next black paladin?â
âI donât know, Lance. Why?â
âYou had to mullet over.â
As much as Keith didnât want to encourage Lance, he couldnât help laughing at the stupid pun. He might talk about Lance getting on his last nerves, but in reality whenever Lance made these stupid jokes or did something cute, it resulted in Keithâs heart fluttering. For whatever reason, the silly boy made Keith feel more loved and at home than he ever did on Earth.
Keith could hear Lance laughing too; he was struggling to say something, but couldnât through the laughter. Keith found that hilarious and laughed harder. Lance gave up as his laughter increased along with Keithâs. Every time they started to calm down, someone would begin to laugh more and the cycle would begin anew. It wasnât until Keith was wiping tears from his eyes that they finally caught their breaths, both sighing together as they calmed down.
âI didnât expect you to enjoy that one.â Lance finally said, giggles minimal.
Keith shrugged. âWhat can I say? I kind of enjoy your comments on my hair.â Keith was feeling daring now. Like he could talk to Lance easier since they couldnât see each other.
âHow? I literally make fun of it every possible second.â
âDonât bullshit me. I know you like it. The teasing just stems from your obsession with it.â
Keith expected some sort of smartass comment in return, but Lance was silent. âHoly shit.â Keith muttered.
âWhat?â Lance questioned.
âYou really do like my hair?â
âNo?â Lance stuttered. âThe style is vastly outdated and it doesnât even look like you ever brush it. Why would I like hair that looks like it hasnât been conditioned in ten years?â
âYou like it,â Keith said in a sing-song voice. âYou want to wash it. You want to comb it. You want to braid it,â he continued lengthening the vowels so it was more of a song than a statement.
Lance didnât acknowledge the accusation and instead changed the topics, âWhere to next, pretty boy?â
Keith was slightly stunned. He may have been teasing Lance, but he didnât expect such a blatant compliment that left him stuttering out âuhsâ and âumsâ as he pulled up the map again. Thatâs when he saw something that definitely wasnât on the map before, sending jolts of adrenaline and fear down his spine and down to his fingertips.
âFuck,â was all he managed to say.
The map didnât show what was actually there, only Lanceâs blue dot and a menacing red diamond blinking just ten feet away from Lance. It was around the corner, but it was in the middle of the path Lance needed to take.
âKeith, buddy. That didnât sound too good? Is everything okay?â Lance asked, nerves seeping into his voice.
âWellâŚâ Keith started, unsure of how to tell Lance there was some sort of threat in the pitch black just feet from him. âYouâre in no immediate dangerâ he decided to say.
Lance groaned. âPlease come up with something more reassuring than âyou are in no immediate danger.ââ
âOkay?â Keith tried something different, âThereâs a possibility that whatever is around the corner is friendly.â
Lanceâs response was no better this time. âI really gotta teach you what âreassuringâ means.â
âWhat do you want me to do? Call you âbabyâ and tell you everything will be okay?â Keith snipped.
âWell that wouldnât hurt,â Lance yelled, exasperated. The pause that followed that comment was a little more than awkward. Keith had meant it as a joke, but Lance was obviously too nervous to catch onto his joking tone of voice.
Eventually, Lance cleared his throat, bringing Keithâs attention back to the situation at hand. âSo is there any way to get around this mystery creature?â Lance asked. âI mean I wouldnât mind fighting it, but Iâm still winded from that fall earlier.â
âNo, Itâs blocking your only way out. The other paths all lead to dead ends.â
âJust my luck,â Lance muttered. âGuess Iâll just charge in blind and hope I donât die.â
âDonât you dare,â Keith started.
âNo, itâs fine, Keith. Even if I die, you still have five functioning paladins.â
âLance donât joke about that,â Keith interrupted.
âReally, if I die, the universe will be fine. Voltron will still be functional,â Lance continued despite Keithâs protests.
âLance, no.I care about you too much for you to die out here!â Keith shouted.
That seemed to shut Lance up, nothing but a quiet âohâ could be heard through the comms. Keith didnât mean to say that, but he did. Now he was sure he had fucked up the rocky relationship Keith and Lance finally had.
He didnât have much time to dwell on it, because all the sudden the red diamond was moving and a loud roar echoed over the intercom. He heard Lance mutter a string of curse words as Lanceâs own dot moved forward on the screen.
âHoly shit, this thing is glowingâ was all Lance said as he turned the corner. Keith wanted to check up on him, but didnât want to distract him in this life-or-death situation. Instead, he just listened to the monsterâs screeches, Lanceâs labored breathing, and the faint sound of Lanceâs bayard shooting rapidly. It was a tense couple of minutes and Keith had no way of knowing if Lance was winning or losing the battle.
Then there was silence. Not even Lanceâs breathing could be heard and Keith started panicking. âLance? Lance! I swear to god if you die on me, I will never forgive you.â
Still nothing. âShit, I accidentally confess to my crush just to have him die on me minutes later,â Keith said to himself. Keith didnât know when he started pacing, but just as he was turning around at the edge of the cave, he saw what seemed to be the tip of Lanceâs helmet sticking out from under the ground further in the cave.
Keith rushed over there to find Lance halfway out of the wall of the cave, pinned to the ground by whatever beast he had managed to defeat. Keith fell onto his knees, and ripped the helmet off of Lanceâs head. The paladin was unconscious but slowly woke as Keith gently slapped his cheeks.
He woke with a goofy grin on his face and a quiet, âOh hey, Keith. I defeated the monster.â
Keith couldnât help but laugh. âYes you did. You did a great job.â he said as he checked where Lance was pinned in the hole on the side of the cave. âLetâs focus on getting you out of here, okay?â
Keith used his sword and lodged it under the beast, using it to push the body of the animal up as Lance pulled himself out from under from the monster. Keith dropped the monster as soon as Lance was free, and scrambled over to him to tackle him in a hug. Bruised and battered, Lance could hardly support himself, so Keith held him up and pressed him to his chest.
âIâm so glad youâre okay,â Keith whispered into Lanceâs neck. They stayed like that for a while with Keith calming down from the fear of losing Lance and Lance catching his breath. Eventually, Lance wrapped his arms around Keithâs waist.
âHey Keith?â Lance whispered. Keith just hummed in response, too lazy to answer properly. âI care about you too.â
Keith tensed. He had forgotten about his earlier confession in favor for focusing on saving Lance. He didnât want Lance to see is face, so he just hugged Lance tighter. âNot in the same wayâ he responded.
âKeithâŚâ Lance breathed. His hands moved down to Keithâs hips and said louder, âKeith, look at me.â He pushed Keith up, despite Keithâs protests. Despite being hurt, he still managed to break out of Keithâs hold..
Lance reached a hand up to brush Keithâs hair out of the way, helmet long abandoned from when he thought Lance was dead. Lance smiled as he rested his hand against Keithâs reddened cheek. âIâve had a crush on you since I first laid eyes on you in the Garrison,â Lance whispered.
Keithâs eyebrows drew together in confusion, âI didnât even know who you were back then.â
Lance laughed then. âThat doesnât mean I didnât know who you were,â Lance explained. âYou stole my heart and you didnât know I existed.â
âIâm sorry,â he apologized.
âWhat for?â Lance chuckled. âThis might be the best day of my life.â
Keith smiled shyly, âReally?â he muttered as he finally brought up his gaze to meet Lanceâs eyes.
Lance was staring sweetly and reached his hand behind Keithâs neck to pull him closer and closer until their noses were just touching. âDefinitely,â he whispered before he pulled Keith in for a kiss.
Lanceâs lips were softer than Keith imagined. His lips moved gently against Keithâs own and Keith hesitantly mimicked Lanceâs own movements. It was a slow kiss, neither of them worried about rushing into something more. Keithâs hands were tingling, but they remained on Lanceâs sides, gripping the paladin suit that kept their bodies separated.
Eventually Keith pushed Lance away and chuckled softly as Lanceâs lips still remained perked even after Keith pulled away. âCome on, Lance. We need to get you into a cryopod.â Keith told him.
Lance groaned, âBut I donât wanna.â
Keith laughed as he stood up, âYouâre such a child.â He reached a hand out to help Lance up, but the boy just reached both arms out in a wide gesture.
âCarry me?â Lance asked, pout firmly in place.
Keith contemplated for a second, âOnly because youâre hurt, idiot.â
It was Lanceâs time to laugh, âSo youâre gonna call me names despite the fact we just kissed?â
âUs kissing doesnât negate the fact that youâre an idiot,â Keith smirked.
âRude,â Lance muttered.
âYeah, but you like it.â
Lance smirked as Keith picked him up bridal style, âYeah, I really do.â
