The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Janssen’s single-tablet regimen for the treatment of HIV in adults, Symtuza (darunavir/cobicistat/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide). Men living with HIV who are on antiretroviral (ARV) treatment experience faster decline in their kidney function compared with HIV-negative men, aidsmap reports.
Publishing their findings in the journal AIDS, researchers studied data from the Multicenter AIDS Cohort on 917 HIV-positive men on ARVs, 159 HIV-positive men not on ARVs and 1,305 HIV-negative men. The study period ran from October 2003 to September 2014.
The protease inhibitor Prezista (darunavir), a recommended antiretroviral (ARV) for those taking HIV treatment for the first time, is associated with an elevated risk of cardiovascular disease, Reuters Health reports.
Publishing their findings in The Lancet HIV, researchers studied data on 35,711 HIV-positive participants in the D:A:D study, which includes individuals in 11 cohorts in Australia, Europe and the United States. The participants were followed for a median 6.96 years between January 2009 and February 2016.
The rate of people acquiring HIV that is resistant to antiretrovirals (ARVs) has risen in recent years, aidsmap reports. However, because for the most part, such strains of the virus have mutations that confer resistance to older HIV medications, their spread is not likely a significant impediment to finding an effective drug regimen.

Hi Dr. Gallant. I'm sure there's a simple answer, but why is it that we take Cobicistat or Ritonavir to boost Darunavir (or other drugs), instead of just taking a higher dosage of Darunavir in the first place? If it's that a higher dose causes more side fx, then why wouldn't the boosted dose cause the same? Thanks for any info. Danny.

Boosters do more than just raise drug levels; they also prolong drug half-lives, meaning that they allow the drug to stick around in the blood for a longer period of time. For example, taking a much higher dose of darunavir might give you an adequate level for a short time, but you might have to take that high dose three times a day or more. Boosting not only lowers the dose but prolongs the dosing interval.

My pain doctor has recommended trigger point injections for the back pain I suffer with. Being poz, I was wondering whether there are any issues with this procedure. Every site I've read says anyone with an infection should not have them. HIV is an infection, obviously. Are they talking about other kinds of infections? It is my understanding steroids are used. Can that affect CD4 and viral load labs? I have those regular labs within two weeks of the procedure date.
There are no particular issues with respect to HIV itself, but if you’re taking an antiretroviral regimen that includes ritonavir (Norvir)—including Kaletra, or anything with cobicistat, you should try to avoid steroid injections due to the interaction between those drugs and the steroids.
