“Come on,” whispered Quai. She poked at the smouldering ashes in the fireplace, wafting the smoke from her face. “Do you think this is the right time?” Wellson shook his head. “Will there ever be a ‘right time’ for this?” He stood. He stopped a moment, picked up a scrap of wood, and tossed it into the fireplace. “‘No’ is the correct answer.” She scoffed. She set the fire poker off to the side. “Willful child,” she spat, though he could not be sure if that remark was directed at him or the girl. “Why now? Why this moment? Of all times — why now.” Wellson gestured about the ruined quarters. “She’s proving a liability? With all of the infiltration as of late, no real long-range support, and her impulsive need to ... to do whatever it is that she wants to do, it’s only a matter of time until she compromises an operation. She’s been lucky so far...” — he stopped, coughing into his shoulder; Quai winced — “...but even that void elf about whom we know nothing is less than a liability than her.” “You’re not wrong, about the elf being an asset... but I think you’re being a little hard on her. She *just* lost Justine, and...” Quai stopped herself. She could already feel the rebuttal: “Two months ago, Quai. Months. Glad she’s found solace in someone, but if she’s going to insist on being in combat, someone is going to have to tell her she’s not equipped for it — beast mode aside, a few patient, methodical kills here and there, what more than luck has gotten her this far? Hm?” Quai scowled. She stood and offered him her hand, though not before casting an eye toward the sleeping Selene. Horrid woman, she thought. “Why does this matter to you. Aside from self-preservation, why does this matter to you?” “Because I promised her — ” “You... you made a promise to June?” Quai started to laugh. “To Justine,” he replied. Quai’s laugh stopped abruptly as it had begun. She took his hand, scanning the room for Juniper — there, near one of the dilapidated tables. She jutted her chin in that direction. “Alright,” she said. “...alright. Go talk to her. But for Gods’ sake, be gentle. She’s not like, well, us.” Wellson nodded, squeezing her hand. He had no idea attuned to the shadows Juniper was; no, he could only assume. He dropped Quai’s hand. He approached the girl without a sound: “Juniper,” he said with a tone vaguely reminiscent of Justine’s. She startled. He grinned to himself: “I have a deal to fulfill. Let’s talk...” (( Mentioned: @quai-mason @juniper-rose-blower @justinegrotius @selene-duskwind ; Relevant: [ @blackbay-wra ]: @killerkyara @ephriza-dawnblade ))
