you were displaying a few selected paintings as part of a student-run exhibition at your university. you were nervous, despite the many compliments you had received on your work, you had never displayed anything in a legitimate gallery before.
it didn’t help that you didn’t have anyone there to support you. most of your friends and family were on the other side of the country back home in the outer banks. your parents had sent their love and congratulations but hadn’t been able to make the trip. worst of all, your boyfriend, who was at a college only an hour away, wouldn’t be able to make it because of a tight deadline on a report.
you were especially bummed out because no one was answering your text messages. you had sent pope four straight messages in a row without a response. you were staring at your favorite painting, mind wandering when a voice broke you out of your daydream.
“pretty good huh? i know the artist - she’s my girlfriend” you gasped, spinning around before throwing yourself into pope’s arms.
you couldn’t help the tears that pooled in your eyes as you held him tightly, “you jerk you said you couldn’t make it!”
“sorry angel, i wanted to surprise you,” he reluctantly let go of you in order to wipe a stray tear that had escaped down your cheek, “i wouldn’t miss your first display for anything”. smiling up at him you pressed your lips to his tightly.
