I already blew off steam and ranted plenty after watching it, and to summarise..
This is Derision levels of hypocrisy - being an abuse victim is no excuse for bullying, but stalking and obsessiveness are excused by trauma; refusing to let go and move one from your old enemies is petty and a sign of a weak, angry person, but the shows creator can dedicate at least one episode per shows season, to shit on his least favourite character and target a fanbase surrounding her FOR YEARS after her character assassination in canon
I liked Sabrina confronting her abuser and moving on, but it had to be ruined by Marinettes edgy aah laughter and corny zingers in response - youāre NOT taugh, lil brošāļø
You could physically see the writing quality taking a deep for this particular episode, which happens every time Thomas pushes his own agenda no matter what
This is JUST a season 5 Chloe ark rehash - this episode serves NO PURPOSE outside those few Lila and Noe involving scenes
Im not even that huge of a fan of Chloe, but this pettiness makes me want to be one with intensity out of pure spite. Youāll never make me hate her, Astruc - how about you touch some grass instead of arguing with your fanbase on Twitter 24/7

Okay, so I ran into a problem while writing Number 6 and that I kept getting distracted from the specific character due to other issues that I felt needed to be addressed, but kept taking away from the character in the number six spot, so it seems necessary to make those other issues itās own essay so I could get my feelings on this issue known and out of the way.
And the issue is simply put:Ā kwamis.
Why? Just why?
I get it! Itās a magical girl show, so we need the magical girl animal familiar to be the mascot characters for the series and a guide or source of power for the heroes. Itās a staple of the genreā¦but itās kind of a silly one. But the other shows at least donāt have NINETEEN of them to fill space and give additional powers that arenāt going to be used half the time!
I hate to say it, but the kwamis as a whole seemā¦kinda pointless in general.Ā
The kwamis are tools. They are there to empower the heroes and to serve as someone for them to talk to so theyāre not just talking to themselves all the time. We donāt see them get arcs or development the way that most characters do (though to be fair, it is Miraculous, and aside from the main characters and a very select few, itās hard to say anyone really got development). They are there to serve a function, but the function isnāt really explored. Other than one or two incidents, we donāt see them test the limits of the kwamis or how they manage. We also donāt really see how the kwamis feel about the conflict or their respective users or the day-to-day situations. It makes it hard to invest in them.
This leads to a problem. While I have some sadness for their situation when theyāre being used by someone like Gabriel, I canāt find it in myself to particularly care about them personally because we barely get anything personal about them and there are so many of them that need to be explored. And I canāt help but feel that a lot of issues in the series would have been avoided if they were just removed altogether.
For Scarlet Lady, screen time as a whole is limited due to the format, so it was expected that the time the kwamis get will also be limited. I expected that. I think a lot of us expected that. So it says something that Zoe was able to give each of them some focus and make them stand out. It says even more that weāre actually able to understand where the basis of the relationship between each of the heroes and kwamis comes from.Ā
Certainly more than Canon where we have the pairs based on āwell you were conveniently there the first time and used them once, so weāre just going to keep this pairā without any consideration or exploration of how these human and kwami pairs function, how they get along, or if they are even compatible.Ā
Look, Iām all for interesting dynamics and pairing people with opposite personalities. Itās a common trope for a good reason. But if you expect me to buy that the stuck up kwami focused on fame and nobility and appearance is gonna be most compatible with the no-name no-fame scrawny brainy kid,Ā you need to show me why.Ā I donāt need some long drawn out character/relationship arc or an entire episode of them butting heads and eventually learning to work together, I just needĀ somethingĀ that explains how these two characters with completely misaligned personalities can have even the beginnings of a bond.
In Scarlet Lady at least, we getĀ SOMETHING.
Look at Pegasus!
Kaalki asks Max if he is glorious and famous. Heās not famous yet, no, but to try and appease her, he tells her that heās created evolving AI, which all of us know is a big deal. Kaalki, as a kwami uninvolved with the world for who knows how long, has absolutely no idea what that is, but it sounds cool, so she accepts him as her user.
This here? Itās not a bond. Itās a trial run. This is a tentative partnership that is just starting to get off the ground.
Then at the end she meets Markov and can actually see Maxās brilliance first hand though sheās sad that Markov canāt see her in turn. THEN Max responds by promising to create a camera that can break the established rule that tech canāt capture images of kwamis andĀ you can see the heart above her head!Ā Max has effectively won Kaalki over! Over the course of one episode shown in eight panels in two comics pages. Thatās it! Thatās the basis for the relationship and that was all that was needed to show us that yes, these two can be solid partners!
Canon just gave us a joke and a throwaway line. And that seems to have been a common trend with most of the interactions between the temp heroes and the kwamis.
So it says something that even with the limited amount of time that can be given to the interactions between the users and the kwamis in Scarlet Lady, they seem so much more meaningful.
Max endearing himself to Kaalki by matching his pride in his tech to her vanity.
Sass praising Luka as a perfect snake.
Longgās initial greeting an explanation getting cut off and the resulting anger and eventual forgiveness over it after Kagami apologizes and calls him ākami-samaā, showing a bit of vanity as well.
Roarrās exuberance and encouraging Juleka.
Barkk similarly supporting and encouraging Mylene, telling her that they are both strong guard, dogs that protect the pack and especially the line āItāll be okay cuz Iāll be with you the whole time!ā Tell me that isnāt the sweetest thing! Then at the end with both of them calling each other a āgood dogā!Ā
Rose and Daizzi sharing their mutual joy of bringing joy to others and actively trying to get to know each other to the point where Marigold has to interrupt them to remind them that this isnāt an adoption (silly girl, it will be soon enough)!
The two artists of the group uniting over their love of art, but Nathaniel accidentally insulting Ziggy by calling his power a downgrade and creating a drawing of them both as an apology and Ziggy eating the drawing in joy!
Lila trying to work out the mechanics of the rooster power.
Alya and Wayzzā¦just Alya and Wayzz.
Marigold and Chat at points having to STOP them from bonding because this is totally a one time thing, I mean it!
You can see the bonds being formed! You can see that they matter, not just power wise, but also emotionally. These are new friendships being formed! And you can see why each of these kwami/human pairings were not only first chosen, but continued to be used at later points instead of the obvious answer of multi-wielding.
It resolves a lot of the issues I had with the kwamis in Canon while still retaining the same rules, functions, and personalities of the Canon.
It kind of goes to show that the true issue wasnāt necessarily the concept, but the execution. Kwamis CAN work. They CAN be useful and meaningful with their own individual personalities and characterization. They CAN get enough focus to highlight those aspects even with there being NINETEEN of them!
They can be silly without being stupid. They can be naĆÆve without being childish. They can have opinions and feelings that may clash with their users or their Guardian without anyone needing to be āwrongā for it.Ā
Zoe made the kwamis MATTER again. She made me love the kwamis in a way Canon couldnāt. And she justified them in every way Canon didnāt.
And as this point keeps coming up as I continue to work on the next essay, Iām hoping that throwing it out here and now will allow me to proceed without getting further derailed from the specific character question.
Yes, you can take that is a spoiler for who number six is.
I havenāt really seen people talk about this but it says a lot about Astrucās āprogressivenessā when in season 6 of miraculous ladybug Marinetteās life literally just revolves around her boyfriend.
Every Marinette plot this season has either been
Her trying to navigate her relationship with Adrien which stresses her out
Her trying to help Adrien with figuring his shit out, which also lowkey stresses her out
Her lying to him about his dad to keep him from crashing out, which really fucking stresses her out
Her entire āarcā this season is about how to girlfriend. Any other friends or any of her hobbies are an after thought and if it comes up, the show still somehow makes it about Adrien.
She has fully been reduced to just a girlfriend.
Tbf it was always like this, 90% of the show was Mari simping for Adrien. But at least there were still 10% other stuff, like her hanging out with her grandma, or designing outfits for Kitty section. It wasnāt much but it was something. Now the 10% are gone, her life revolves 100% about Adrien.
Meanwhile Adrien tries to discover who he is, what passions he has, connects with his grand parents, tries to cope with the loss of his dad etc.
Yes, all of this shouldāve started wayyy sooner. Also yes, Marinetteās lie is still a huge disservice to him. But goddamn at least he has something outside the relationship going on.
Mari doesnāt. Her one and only motivation is keeping Adrien happy. Her only motovation in life is a guy.

Lots of people have said it before me, but Chloeās situation is messed up in so many ways. With multiple adults having groomed and used her, before tossing her aside. And how sheās still being groomed and exploited, but isnāt aware of it. Or she is, and just refuses to acknowledge it because she wants to think this is love.
But another thing that I recently realised that I think makes it so much worse is just how publicly available this knowledge is, in universe. Such as in Queen Wasp, when Audrey says thereās nothing exceptional about her on live tv. Which is several levels of horrible itself. But itās also shown in miraculous thereās social media, so itās highly possible someone else had recorded it and put it online for everyone to see. Presumably this also could have happened when she was removed as mayor and Andre dragged her off and sent her with Audrey.
Meaning that literally anyone in the universe of miraculous could easily find the footage of Chloe being treated badly online.
Yet of course, both the show and Thomas refuse to acknowledge this other aspect of tragedy to Chloeās character. As no one, especially any other adults other than Noe and Audrey, has attempted truly help Chloe in any way. Leaving Chloe to be manipulated even more. While Thomas has arguments with fans online about it, and then bashing Chloe fans in the show itself.
Laughing that Felix apologized off-screen after giving Marinette a realistic on-screen panic attack which made her break down in tears sobbing from grief and self loathing
