Once again, I headed back to the beautiful state of North Carolina. This seemed like an obvious choice for a quick get away, due the excessive amounts of entertainment in such a small radius. The term "radius" could be used loosely geometrically, because I was in an area known as the Triangle. The Triangle is what locks in Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill. Draw a line to connect all three towns and it looks like you've got yourself a killer slice of pizza! Since I'd already done a blog in Raleigh, and got too much tar on my heel from walking around in Chapel Hill, I was very intrigued with Durham. The atmosphere is enchanted by the rich view of the Smokey Mountains, contagious with the positive vibes of college students, young and old, and fragrant with the smell of local eats and drinks, and that one group of girls that put on way too much perfume.Â
From my time actually spent in North Carolina, excluding the time I spent a long weekend with my family at a beach house in Duck when I was 15 and all I wanted to do was stay in my room, comb my stupid scene hair, listen to My Chemical Romance, and not be at a beach house in Duck, I've learned that Carolinians take their food very seriously. No matter how cool you think you are, no one can deny a solid, awe inspiring meal. Now, if you have read any of my past blogs, or even if this is your first merry go round, hear this. I'm a sucker for craft beer and great burg. Durham didn't let me down when I found a brewery that also happens to make the best sangwiches in town. Even 15 year old me would rip off his A Static Lullaby t-shirt and freak out about how great this place was. But first, check it out!Â
The ambiance was bright and loud, but in a vibin' brunch/lunch kind of way. There were community style picnic tables for people to share their meals at, all while having the option to peer through the glass window that separates the actually brew room from the eating foyer. There were plenty of seats at the bar, and even covered patio seating in case the weather hasn't made it's mind up or if you just wanted to bring your furry friend along. The bartenders and waitstaff seemed knowledgable about their menu and even threw in a couple suggestions as well. After glancing through the menu, I finally realized what I needed inside of me. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the Shadoe Burger.Â
The Shadoe Burger is piled high with house made pimento cheese, vinaigrette slaw, chimichurri sauce, pasture raised, ground in house, North Carolina beef, all in between two super soft house baked buns. As a preface, I was never 100% sold on pimento cheese. This trip alone completely changed my mind and I have made my own since coming home. So, that being said, the pimento cheese was the star attraction to me. It was creamy, cheesy, a bit of spicy, and played a huge role in every bite. The chimichurri sauce, which is essentially parsley, oregano, garlic, olive oil, and white vinegar coarsely blended, added the savory, earthy undertones and the slaw was the perfect addition, bringing a cool, refreshing crunch factor to the burger. The meat was extremely tender and easily fell apart with each bite. All this was paired with the house IPA and the extremely addicting duck fat fries, tossed with rosemary and Fleur de Sel. I just pulled a cartoon wolf while thinking about those fries again. Excuse me why I roll my tongue up off the floor.Â
This was a wonderful experience. The ambience was alive, the beer was scrumptious, the flavors were on par, but I do have one little bugaboo. And I wish I didn't. This was going to be the perfect burger, but it didn't come out hot. I understand there are a lot of people putting orders in, but this not so little detail is the icing on the cake. It's the kit to the caboodle. It's the mole to Enrique, and I feel like my experience was post surgery. But that's okay. I will strongly rate the burger 4 of 5 burgz, with very little room for improvement.Â
If you happen to be around the wonderful More-Food-A Triangle (get it?) in North Carolina, please do yourself a flavor and stop by Bull City Burger & Brewery and grab a bite to eat and a cold pint. I promise you wonât be let down. Cheers!Â
