It’s International Non-Binary People’s Day, which has only been about since 2012, despite genders outside of the binary existing for centuries. Whilst terms like "non-binary” and “genderqueer” are relatively recent words that have gained popularity in the West, different genders are nothing new. With an endless focus on Western words for those living outside of the gender binary, we run the risk of centring white voices on a day that is supposed to be “International”, and contribute to erasing the long history of different identities around the world. . The gender binary is a Western imposition, with examples of other genders existing in different cultures for centuries. From two spirit people in North American indigenous cultures to the five genders of the people on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia, those outside of the gender binary have always been around. . Colonialism has pushed the gender binary to every corner of the planet. One of the world’s oldest trans communities, the Hijras of South Asia, have faced increased hostility as a direct result of British rule in India. Whilst we know that much of global homophobia is a direct result of Western powers imposing their anti-gay laws, these anti-gay laws have been harmful for trans and non-binary people too. Now Bangladesh and India are in the group of eight countries and eighteen US states that at least partially recognise a third gender there is hope that social attitudes will improve toward the Hijras. The UK, India’s coloniser, still has no legal recognition for non-binary people. . No borders, no binaries! White supremacy and transphobia are all wrapped up together through colonialism, Western standards of femininity, and patriarchal structures.
