'It's time to take another leap forward for equality'
Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has revealed plans that will introduce the best trans and non-binary laws in the UK.
The Scottish National Party leader said if she wins May’s Holyrood elections to expand Scotland’s gender recognition laws to ensure they are in line with ‘international best practices’.
Sturgeon said she believed it is ‘no longer in this day and age appropriate for people not to have their perfectly legitimate identity recognized legally’.
‘Enabling young people to make informed choices about their gender and sexual identity is about supporting them to be themselves so that they might fulfil their potential,’ she said.
Her plans are:
Trans people will be able to change their gender on their birth certificate by self-declaration.
Children under 16 will also be allowed to do change their gender on their birth certificate with permission of their parents.
All school children will be taught about tolerance to LGBTI people through early years, primary and secondary education.
Non-binary genders will be recognised by 2021.
Introduction of the choice to have X on passports instead of M or F.
