Have we fallen off? Have we been taken up by the age of the turn up?
Where do we even start?
Well, firstly let’s just clear things out, I am allowed to say what I view as music, you know, the ultimate sweet sounds that serenade the soul and enhance the nostalgic feelings of all things beautiful and positive versus the type of filth polluting our society that I wouldn’t even let my gold fish listen to. We all have different tastes and feel different things when we listen to music however we choose to express the feeling. Some of us get up and dance while some of us choose to remain seated because, lets face it, we aren’t all born for this dancing thing.
I grew up in a time where I was encouraged to be open minded about a lot of things, Apartheid, Racism, homosexual rights, xenophia, revolution, civil war, jazz, country, Brooke Benton, well atleast in my family, but never was I ready though for the plethora of genres of music that were available to me and this I only realized in my 20s. I am in the process of discovery as everyday and so should you.

And my list doesn’t even include American Traditional Rock, Polka or Zydeco, fitness and workout music, children’s music, gospel karaoke or German stuff, so slow down, I’ve only just scratched the surface. Music isn’t like coin collecting or having new sneakers every month, the evolution of music can take us a whole lifetime to dissect (records, tapes, cd’s, mp3, mp4, live etc). It matters not what genre appeals to you as an individual or as a group, whether it is Tsonga music or Umbaqanga (contemporary Zulu) music, we all find a way to feel the rhythm.
Brian from Randburg for example, listens to nothing but underground hip hop, stuff even ive never heard of , no Jay Z and has no need for commercial hip hop or any other Genre of music for that matter because he finds peace in his 4.5 TB of music. King, on the other only listens to vocal house and that too is absolutely acceptable.
Do we judge the young man and woman listening to the recent craze labled South African Alternative Rap? Do we tell them to go play in the mud with their skinny pants, Ace hood raps and big sneakers? When do we draw the line, do we even draw the line? Its music right? Turn Up!
