Today for April Fools Day, I'd like to present a history lesson on one of Tumblr's favorite memes:
The Crab Rave!
The original Crab Rave music video was posted by an online electronica musician called Noisestorm about 7 years ago. Before then, he was mostly posting dubstep, drumstep, and drum and bass tracks to youtube. You might be familiar with some of his tracks like Barracuda, which was used as part of the soundtrack for the game Just Shapes and Beats.
His catalog took a sharp left turn on April 1st, 2018, when out of nowhere Crab Rave dropped upon the platform and took the internet by absolute storm. That's right, Crab Rave was an April Fools prank that was made purely because it deviated SO HARD from Noisestorm's entire musical sound that it could only be seen as a total joke by his loyal followers. But the funniest part of all was how much people genuinely LOVED Crab Rave, from the bouncy soundtrack to the silly visuals of crabs bouncing around, it became a huge hit even outside of his usual circle of fans.
Noisestorm only released one track after Crab Rave dropped, and then his account went silent...
...coming back to life only to reveal the trailer for the game Crab Champions.
The April Fools joke track blew up so astronomically big that Noisestorm dedicated the next seven years just to making and growing his silly music video into a full-functioning roguelite game about crabs blowing up other crabs with shotguns and assault rifles, with a little bit of speedrunning parkour thrown in for extra seasoning. Even still to this day if you visit Noisestorm's profile on yt, all you'll be met with is crab updates year after year. Music publisher pages like Monstercat still haven't gotten anything new from Noisestorm either, only Crabs.
Lemmie tell ya, as someone that actively followed these accounts and was there when the Crabaggedon first happened, I couldn't be happier knowing something big, silly, but still wonderfully genuine came out of this April Fools prank.
