On Microsoft's No-IP.com Takedown
I've been reading Krebs on Security for a bit now, since the Target malware infection. Recently he posted an article about Microsoft using a court order to shut down No-IP.com. The details seem somewhat fuzzy, but basically some of the site's users were cybercriminals who used the service to track malware-infected computers connected to the internet via a dynamic IP address (most computers, including mine) and have access to them at any time. Much like how a basic user would use the service, just minus all the criminal stuff.
Essentially, Microsoft's court order shut the whole service down. Not just the offending users, but all users. I think a few of my clients are users of the service, but they have yet to contact me with any issues. It's frustrating that in Microsoft's malware witch hunt, regular old users of a service have gotten hosed as well. Hopefully it will be back up soon.
Let's hope no one finds out about freedns.afraid.org!
