I remember the time when I watched superjasooon, a single individual, tore the whole hoperai fandom to shreds (and apparently insulted a whole country to boot). Iâve said this before and Iâll say this again; Jason is an apocalyptic ship that cannot be stopped. He runs on your tears and hate.

I had a thought (oh dear). Warning, this is a rant... eh, sort of. It's worded nicer than the typical rant, I think Please blacklist "tw: shipping" if you want to avoid these on my blog in the future
Do Lightning and Hope really know each other all that well, in the grand scheme of things? I see shippers very often say they're very deeply connected or synced to each other's thoughts and feelings to the point where them being together works perfectly, or mostly okay, because of it, and that they know each other's faults and flaws so of course they work perfectly, and yet...
In the first game, she knew him all of, what, eight days at most? If you subscribe to the headcanon that FF13 took place over a grand total of thirteen days, she might have known him for about eight of them or so. She didn't even really speak to him until he ran after her in the Vile Peaks, and then the fight with his Eidolon Alexander was the last major piece of development between them. Come to think of it, that came after a significant chunk of time between Gran Pulse and the Fifth Ark. Quite frankly, despite their trek through the Vile Peaks and Gapra Whitewood, it's not like Hope ever really knew her. She has her Heroic BSOD in the Nutriculture Complex, but he shuts it out because he still wants to kill Snow, and then Snow is the catalyst for him getting off that dangerous tangent. Lightning just hugs him in relief afterward.
And then, at the end of FF13-2, she disappears, and quite frankly, he doesn't see her again for 1,000 years. He spent a grand total of thirteen days in her presence, with major interactions in maybe a couple of them, and then doesn't see her again until he shows up, as a stripped-down, half-mad doll possessed by Bhunivelze, in the Ark, at which point Lightning is an emotionless doll herself.
Therefore, I honestly don't understand this.
Where did they become so deeply linked to each other, like some shippers says? This boggles me. He was a rich, rude, selfish, spoiled brat when they met, and then when he finally gets better, that's the point at which they really stop interacting. He notes her as being one of his reasons for being brave enough to get on the Palamecia to rescue Sazh and Vanille, but she's not the only one he looks to for strength. And then they have centuries of separation.
And what is he concerned with in those centuries? Saving the world, saving humanity, saving Fang and Vanille, and saving Lightning. Some try to make it out that all he's concerned with is saving her and it's so romantic, but that is not true and ignores the bonds he had with the other characters. He had a special bond with Vanille, too, don't forget, as well as Snow. Lightning was a mentor-sister type, but he's not after her as a romantic interest.
Which is why even LR baffles me. Where did all this talk of them being so close come from, and the hints that he longs to see her most of all in the epilogue novella? Lightning really makes it out as though they are such close friends and compatriots, but that's not really the case. I almost feel like SE just pandered to the ship to make people happy and all squealy (it has a massive fanbase in Japan, I have heard).
Quite frankly, she probably knows Caius better than Hope. She spent more time fighting him and running into all his problems (his pain at losing Yeul, him breaking down in tears, then seeing him at the end of the world twice and so forth) than she has getting to know Hope's ins and outs. Hope was a child when she left. He's a man in a child's body and practically void of emotion when she returns. It doesn't work.
Everyone has the right to ship whoever they want. I'm pretty tolerant of ships. I have virtually no NOTPs. But the kind of gaps in logic both canon and fanon provide on this particular ship just boggle my mind. They have no real deep emotional or spiritual (okay, no one has ever really said this, but borderline) connection. They don't know each other all that well. Could they someday? Oh, yeah, definitely. No way am I ruling that out. But to take the canon depiction and say they're already in love, or crushing (usually on Hope's end), or deeply connected, or know each other so well, just... makes no sense to me.
To be honest, I don't mind Hoperai fanart or fanfiction. I've read them before and I was pretty neutral about it.
I used to ship them before, but now? Not at all anymore. I dislike it because people have ruined that fandom for me. Certain Hoperai shippers are nice but the ones who bring out the hate are pretty shitty. With their biased translators, rabid fangirls, members who send anon hate about telling other people to kill themselves, shove other people's throats about how canon it is, I'm not convinced. It's like a group of little mature shippers who try to leash their big ass cry babies. So yeah, I'm not afraid to say how disgusting some of them are on Twitter and on here. Pretty freaking stupid how they whine about people not accepting their precious ship. Like please, sit down. Not all people are going to prefer what you like.
Was hoperai confirmed canon in an interview? Watanabe stated Hope "completes"Lightning.
Not that I heard of.I mean, I think that the only relevant interview that last came out was the one in the Ultimania, in which Lightning's ~*~husbando~*~ Toriyama stated that 'Lightning doesn't belong with anyone'.

I respect people as a proper human being as well as this fandom, but when I see these types of things, it makes me laugh how much they're acting like five-year-olds. Haha! To think my friend and I were bashed (including my other friends) behind our backs, I really applaud the maturity of this fandom. Good job, guys! Very lovely, much respect for you~
i don't say this often but ya'll need to learn some goddamn perspective
friendly reminder that while you people are bitching about FICTIONAL COUPLES, around the REAL world there are:Â
women being burned alive by their husbands and families
governments killing their own people while the international community looks away
kids killing themselves because they are bullied so badly
etc
some of you act like shipping hope/light is the single worst fucking crime deserving only of punishment in the seventh circle of hell wrought by satan himself-which is an INSULT to victims of actual atrocities i listed above
not to mention you are grouping a very large group of people who have one extremely trivial thing in common and demonizing them based on that one thing, and calling them "pedophiles." you know what kind of people do that? homophobes do that. racists do that. i don't think any of you are homophobic or racist but you have accepted their principles, so good fucking job.Â
and on the other side some people feel so fucking OPPRESSED by a couple of shitheads who attack people personally based only a single pairing they like, stop taking these morons so seriously because they CLEARLY have a problem- and learn what real fucking oppression is
most people on both sides have been kind and reasonable, but to everyone else (and you know who you are), GROW UP. idk about you guys but i ship things because, like playing video games, its a fun temporary escape from reality, but it stops being fun when you take it so seriously. some of you have so much anger and passion, so for the love of god, DIRECT THAT ANGER AT SOMETHING WORTHWHILE (like you know the things i listed earlier where it could actually be of some use)
I donât mean to rain on anyoneâs parade, but Iâve the need to get this off my chest. To be straightforward, itâs about a pairing. Alright, before you judge, Iâm going to warn you itâs very opinionated. Don't like? Don't read.
I used to support the pairing due to friends/rp partners. I enjoyed RPing as Hope, the H/L fanart (I can obviously tolerate it even if I click the blacklisted tag), etc. But I still didnât have the vibe to squeal over and because of my multi-ships with other pairings, there were bad experiences with that specific fanbase.
Any people who are against Hoperai, I donât want to hear about pedophilia because age difference doesnât matter. In LR, weâre already aware Hopeâs an adult which means over a thousand years. That includes everyone and every pairing. This doesnât mean fans are supporting pedophilia. Hope/Light is not part of reality, so please stop accusing falsely and stop stating an invalid reason to not ship it.
However, Iâve a different case to refuse the ship despite I ship the rest of Lightâs pairings. Anyone whoâs screaming how canon it is can say it whenever they want. If certain people shove everyone how canon it is, I will merely shake my head, so no matter what others say, Iâm not offended. Iâm simply neither convinced theyâre potentially a couple nor will I ever interpret them romantically.
The reasons I donât feel the romantic vibe from their actions/words are because:
A. âThe hug between them during FFXIII is canon enough, the part where Light says âWeâre partners,â etc.â Itâs a game that doesnât revolve a romantic atmosphere within exception of Snow and Serah, so why would Lightning, an ex-soldier who has overfilled goals to find her Focus as well as thinking of a way to free her sister from crystal stasisâwould ever think of her partner-in-crime she recently met would shift to a romantic interest from her eyes? Why would Hope, a 14 year old boy who recently lost his mother, branded as a lâCie, doomed as a person if he either fails, he comes a monster, or if he passes the task, heâs trapped in crystal stasisâwould advance romantic feelings for Lightning? Sure, he looks up to her, not the way âLight-san, I want to hold you forever,â but more like âShe protected me before, and I want to do the same. I really look up to her; sheâs one of the friends that helped me overcome my darkness.â
B. âIn FFXIII-2, Hope was looking for Light! In LR, he said, âAs long as you were with me Light, I didnât have to fear anything.â Thatâs romantic! How can they just be platonic? Snow also nudged him to go to Lightningâs open arms at the end of LR!ââ Oh yes, what a way to devalue his relationships with others. //inserts sarcasm// For obvious reasons, he isnât the type to engage in a romantic relationship because he neither showed it throughout the trilogy to the extent he prioritized his years of research to find everyoneâs disappearance and to save citizens of both worlds, not just Lightningâs. Again, itâs a part of his character, not through romantic purposes of being with character A or B. This is also the time Light is too focused on Serah and her current battle. As to why she said, âThis is not your battle.â You can interpret it as romantic for his quote, but I do not see why he'd actually be in love with her. His actions&words are as important as they are. It can also be interpreted as in âBecause you were there, Iâm not scared anymore. I can fight now, youâve taught me so much, and itâs because of you. Thank you for raising me.â His nod wasnât exactly starry-eyed, donât you think? If he was in love, he would have embraced her by now, implying that he'd miss her. At the end of LR, if Lightning is copying Serah's pose to open up arms, then why is Sazh doing the same thing as well? I don't see how romantic it is. Everyone is doing their own job at a life/death situation, so I donât understand why SE would squeeze in a romantic development unless Snow/Serah and potentially Noel/Yeul. No romance. Period.Â
C. "But it can develop into romance!" The interviews between the directors. As said by Toriyama himself, he personally doesnât want Light to belong to anyone. Not to mention, the two directors answered the interviewer about Hope/Lightâs relationship before LRâs release: a brother/sister bond. Funny because some fans said that âHope-kunâ is the younger version of Hope, not the older Hope. Very biased, donât you think? I asked my sister for a second opinion who never played FFXIII before. She said, âSame shit, Sherlock. Itâs still the character you guys are talking about.â I had to agree because -kun is an honorific and we're still referring to the character, either the younger and older.
D. "Hope said he wouldn't know where he'd be without her! Being in a relationship doesn't mean she's going to stop being independent!!" Again, it's part of his character even though we have biased translators. If it was like that, he wouldn't have said she helped him raise him, just like a brother or son would say. It doesn't explicitly imply/say she's interested in romance, perhaps she is, but we've seen how focused she was to overcome obstacles as a l'Cie, a warrior goddess, and a savior. It doesn't make sense to me. Platonic love can be just as strong as romantic love. I don't understand why people think platonic is inferior to romantic whereas you see certain romantic relationships don't always last or don't always turn out the way you want to. Platonic terms is still love no matter how you argue.
If it does become canon, then Iâll reconsider, but I highly doubt it. A H/L wedding that I keep hearing about? Not gonna happen. After all, RiaxLight is a better ship. (That was a joke.) As a huge Lightning fan, Lightning is in need of no lover, in my objective opinion. Itâs a game. Each has their own interpretation, and this is mine. A game doesnât need to be developed any further for a romantic relationship UNLESS it is necessary for SE to have the development. SE didnât do that, and if they did, theyâd have made it in the beginning, no? It's not like it's a shoujo manga where they'll definitely put romance in it.
Do NOT twist my words, I donât deny their strong partnership, but their character prioritize their family/friends before anything. People tend to forget this is an action, family oriented genre, not a dating sim. I donât believe a game needs to be further developed for a wishy washy romantic relationship the majority of the fans fangirl for, since people keep forgetting Light is a fictional character who should only stick with the audienceâs imagination of whoever is her love interest? More so, peopleâs choice to ship her with anyone or no one. I donât need a toxic fandom. I donât need anyone to dictate what I like. Certain people canât accept the fact that there are other pairings other than major ones. That saddens me. The way CERTAIN fans twist everything to make their ship âcanonâ do not understand diversity of opinions. This had to be said.
"Am I saying you should stop shipping that ship?" No! Go ahead and think how implied or canon it is because I won't stop you. "You're referring to every shipper, aren't you?!" Nope, I'm just referring it in general and because I know this is a toxic fandom, I don't want to bother for an argument. I'm stating my opinion. "You hate Hoperai don't you?" No, hate is a strong word. I just dislike it in a romantic extent, but platonic? It's all good. But some fans? Er, sorry. I've seen some very offensive/rude comments on this site and other forums/sites. "God, why did you even bother to write all this?!" It's my rant, it's my blog, and I never asked for your opinion?
My opinion though. I'll be surprised you actually read this all the way through. That ends my long rant. :>
