Some potential prey was poking fun at the #greatwhiteshark from a distance which did peak the sharks curiosity but not anymore than a casual swim over to take a closer look. We did not get to view a predation as either the shark was well fed or just felt it had limited chance in catching the sea lion so did not invest the energy. Moreover, if there is no education and/or no serious repercussions for those killing them then the “protections” granted these apex predators have little more value than the paper they are printed on… We need to educate people on the importance of these creatures to a level where they will protect them instead of fishing them. The dead shark is a young Great White Shark, Carcharodon carcharias, one of the most iconic animals of our oceans and the world’s largest known predatory fish. Great whites are rare in the Mediterranean sea and are protected under the Barcelona convention therefor shall not be retained on board, let alone offered for sale. Currently, their Mediterranean population is listed as Critically Endangered in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species due to the dramatic decline of its population in the last 50 years that varies from 52% to up to 96% in some regions. Unfortunately, contemporary narratives widely presented by the media, have attached an utterly negative connotation to this fascinating species, propagating a fabricated image of them as implacable and voracious predators.
