Composting: replace fossil fuels with soylent green
Our heap slowly taking form
With the agricultural focus increasingly changing back to more organic methods, it is to no surprise seeing so many composting startup projects around. Organic or biologically sustainable methods aspire to use less potentially harmful applications to the environment. One of these practices involves using more organic soil enrichment practices and either doing away with or minimizing the use of inorganic fossil fuel derived fertilizers. With success one will start to see soils with better structure and better water holding capacity. Soils also improve in their microbial and natural nutrient status requiring less and less of our costly short term inorganic fertilizers.
Apart from the organic nutrients, this is also largely thanks to the amount of beneficial microbes introduced back into the soil. These “bugs” further unlock the nutrients already available in the soil for plant use.
Of course there is also an impact on your checkbook - related to the fuel price hikes of late, so we have seen fertilizer prices go in the same direction.
