The funny thing about Nanami is that for a good portion of the story, her existence is a secret for all of Japan. After her family was banished to an island when she was about 7 years old, she has lived there for 20 years, with anyone that knew about her on the mainland slowly forgetting about her (and due to her sickness as a child, she wasnât allowed to go out much, so she was seen much either).Â
When she actually escapes the island? All of the major factions show concern over her participating in the sword hunt and doubt that they could defeat her. Even Emonzaemon, the final opponent faced at the climax, doubted that he could take on Nanami in a head-on fight. They all refer to her as âthe monsterâ or âthe strongest woman in Japanâ. The prequel audio novel âKyokotou Yasuriâ goes more into depth about how she earned the latter name. At the current time in the setting, the best swordsman in Japan is named Hakuhei Sabi, whose mother is named Kokken Sabi. She trained him under her sword style and was even stronger than him.
Nanami, at one point in the story, faced off against Kokken in a duel when she was only 7 and is implied to have actually killed her.
