How To Write Journalism
- Create a plan/ guide as to where to begin your story and where to end it. Do not rush in and just start writing.
-  Donât treat the audience like theyâre stupid, but donât try to âdress upâ your words
- Simple but factual
- Introduction is the most important part. Hook the readers with a first line/intro paragraph
- After the introduction, the rest of the story is the most important. Now that readers are reading, craftfully place your facts, information, and observations
- Puns, puns, puns
Washington Square Park Interviews
NND1A
Felixâs Map.Â
Felix focused on the design of the park and the buildings around it. He included the many benches, trees, walkways, the arch, playground, and the fountain. The playground made me think of the two different designs and functions of the playgrounds. The trees reminded me of the squirrels Â
1) in Washington square park there are two playgrounds. One consists of swings and the other a jungle gym
2) The squirrels in the park seem to be more friendly than the people. How many people get bit a year by these park squirrels?
Emily Hoodenpyle, 23 Jan. 2019, Assignment #1: What is and What isnât Journalism, Good v Bad Design, (WC: 330).
âMeanwhile, in China, Ivanka Trumpâs Business Doesnât Seem So Defunct After Allâ by Michelle Ruiz IS Journalism
Although this is a more casually written piece than I typically associate with journalism, it still succeeds in informing the reader on a topic, the cultural and political importance of it, and has sources to back up what is being claimed.
âDoes Journalism Have a Future?â by Jill Lapore IS journalism
This is an incredibly meta example of journalism, reporting on the craft of journalism itself and its place in modern culture.
âThe Best Cold Weather Accessories Are Also the Brightestâł by Madeline Fass IS NOT Journalism.
Rather than offer any reasoning behind the appeal, popularity, or safety features of brightly colored winter wear, the article instead acts as thinly disguised advertising for the brands featured within it.
ââGrand Designsâ, the Most Potent Study of Gender Roles on Televisionâ by Zach Helfand IS NOT Journalism
While the article is informative, it conveys a critique of the home design show, rather than a factual report on it.
Good Design is BroadwayDirect.com.
The site is clean and eye catching, with buttons that contrast with the photos and backgrounds, and large, readable print.
Good Design is https://88cupsoftea.com/
The site is optimized for finding the podcast users are looking for and offering up other episodes in a clean and accessible way.
Bad Design is http://5e.d20srd.org/
This a completely personal opinion, but the repeating paper-like background and Papyrus text feels cheesy and unprofessional. Likewise, the text is so small I have to squint to see it.
Bad Design is Tumblrâs default blog theme.
Despite the supposed fact that Tumblr is a blogging platform, the design of the website fails to let users to use it as such. Theyâve added unnecessary and confusing steps to access personal blogs, failed to create a working search system, and made it impossible to create a header image that works on both a mobile and desktop theme.

Example of bad desgin. The headline states, âNever Tweetâ, but the photo does not relate to the article whatsoever. A finger pointing or touching a black screen does not coorelate to tweeting. For all viewers know, thatâs not even a phone screen that the finger is touching.Â
Nick Sandmann, the Catholic school student in the center of the viral video showing him facing off with a native American elder, spoke for the first time on the "Today" show.

Example of good design. Provided proof of orginal video, followed up with a one on one interview, and included two perspectives. Video was not choppy or hard to follow with.
Paul N. Whelan, a former United States Marine, was arrested after being given a thumb drive of state secrets, believing it to contain vacation pictures, his lawyer says.

Journalism Artlice. Report of a US Marine vet on vacation. A spy? Or a man taking photots in a Cathedral. Context with a so called âdebateâ/lawsuit.Â
