1) Anecdotal: Is there ever a calm and copecatic day for nurses and doctors in a hospital?Â
2) Hard: Nurses and Doctors work at their best ability not only to help treat patients as they come, but also keep the place a safe and calm atmosphere. As patients leave, more come. What does it take to keep these nurses and doctors going throughout a busy shift. How often do they see a calm shift?Â
3) Scene: On Thursday at 12 a.m. nurses were not to be seen behind the check in desk due to high demand needed in the back. As people began to enter and wait, screams escaped from the room behind the counter. A woman was seated on a bench with a mask and an elderly woman was led inside by a woman assisting her to walk. Leaves littered the floor and slid across the tile each time the automatic doors opened.Â
Greenwich Villageâs Lenox Hill Hospital is an occuring series of events. With so much chaos going on, the check in desk is deserted at times. As I walked into the hospital, there was a girl in the waiting room with her face covered by a mask. Even though there was a lot going down behind the corridors, the hospital was silent and felt desolate. As I stood by the front desk waiting to be attended to, an older woman was locked in arms with a younger lady. The younger lady was assisting the older woman as she hobbled on one leg, avoiding from putting pressure on the other leg.Â
Once I was signed in, identity bracelet on my wrist, vitals checked, and began the walk to an assigned cubicle, a woman threw herself on the ground. I was suprised when nurses and security simply stood by the woman just watching instead of approaching her for help. I then got the hint that the woman was mentally ill and had been causing a scene prior to my arrival. After being asked several times by staff to get up, the woman continued to yell, âshut up.â The staff assured her that if she continued to act out or hurt herself with hopes of recieving a hospital room, they would have to make her leave her cubicle. As the woman began to carry on about how she hated the staff, she started to undress herself.Â
Even though it was nearly 1 in the morning, the ER was packed with patients. There was not an empty cubicle in sight. Doctors and nurses were pressed to help people as efficiently and quickly as possible. More security guards approached the homeless woman and tried to keep her calm. They stood around her to make sure she did not only cause harm to people around her, but also to prevent her from harming herself.Â
After waiting an hour and a half to be seen, a nurse began to ask me symptoms and handed me a cup with an orange lid. After going to the restroom and assesing what had to be done with the cup, I waited another 45 minutes. A young doctor introduced himself and explained what he reccomends me to do in order to help treat my kidney infection. While explaining, a nurse came to my cubicle with needles, IV fluids, and tubes to take blood. As the nurse began my treatment process, the homeless woman began to scream again. With her pants wrapped around the bottom of her leg, she waddled and escaped into the bathroom. As I watched, saline cooled my veins.Â
As time began to progress and after six hours in the hospital, I was finally released. I had not seen the homeless woman since she resided in the bathroom. As I walked into the waiting room to exit the main doors, I saw the woman again. She was sprawled out on the couch in the waiting room without pants. Unsure with what to do, security guards had their backs turned to the woman to block sight from anyone entering or leaving the hospital.Â
