dynamic I really want from post-movie Nimona and Ambrosius, once they get along okay
Ambrosius: [losing his shit over an email from his mother, pacing] I do believe in what I’m doing! I do love my life and know this is the best path for me! So why is it that one word from my parents and I feel like such a failure?! Nimona: Because your parents…? Ambrosius: Have… high… standards? Nimona: Come on, Chopper, like we practiced. I’m not against fics where Nimona calls Ballister her dad, that can be super sweet, but I’m not actively drawn to it either— they’re definitely family now, but putting father/child names on it just doesn’t feel super necessary to me
however
I do think it would be super funny if Nimona grumblingly called Ambrosius her shitty stepdad, having never called Bal her dad before

Look, I don't draw Ambrosius in his armour much (I mostly draw him pre- and post-canon, for whatever reason) so I'm only recently trying to figure it out, but.
The codpiece is ridiculous but at least it's a normal piece of armour. Codpieces were a thing, and understandably, you want to keep that safe.
No, what pisses me off is the scoop around it on either side of his fauld. What the fuck are you doing, my guy? That shape makes no sense. You couldn't really build it out of the scale mail the fauld's implied to be by the scalloping, and the lower points would be flapping around!
Codpiece: normal. Frame for the codpiece? You fuckin' peacock.

So I finally showed my mum Nimona today! I knew she’d enjoy it, and she did!
But afterwards she was like “I’m not sure why the knights had to have a romantic relationship besides that it’s nice to have the representation… I just feel like not everything needs a romance. Does it add anything, for it to be romantic?”
(this is not latent homophobia btw I know my mum and her stated reasoning was genuine)
So I started talking about how with Nimona herself as a gender fluidity allegory, having Ballister as a gay man raised in this restrictive society draws some good parallels to how the conservative establishment tries to pry the queer community apart, divide and conquer, and Bal doesn’t understand Nimona at first and thinks she’s ‘too much’, but once he learns to trust her knowledge of herself and recognizes the institutions (ha) are going to throw them both away equally he manages to be there for her and be exactly the support she needs
and two interesting things came of this conversation
First of all, my mum just kinda blinked at me at the end of it and then went “…that’s really insightful, and you’re right. That is a good reason for it to be a romantic relationship.” So that felt good.
But the other thing is that when I first mentioned Nimona as genderfluid she kinda cocked her head at me, so I laid that out a bit, talking about their conversation in the alley, needing to be able to shift and have all the different versions of her acknowledged as her, the “I’m Nimona”, being externally called a monster for not fitting into the boxes, etc
and she gave me this curious look and said kind of carefully
“I think that’s something that would be really clear to a genderqueer or genderfluid person, and I’m glad it’s there.”
which is lovely and I think it translates to
“my genderfluid child noticed something in this movie that went completely over my head”
why the fuuuuuuck is movie!Ballister so damn hard to draw
I am 40 pages into this dang comic and he appears on most of them and I am only just STARTING to feel like he looks kinda like himself
and when I say kinda I mean kinda
does anybody know if Stevenson ever drew Dr Blitzmeyer without the goggles on? I went through the Nimona tag on his tumblr and found nothing, but I don’t really know how to search Twitter or Instagram. I doubt she takes them off much but like girl’s gotta sleep at some point and I’m curious if there’s a jumping-off point or if I should just go full headcanons.
