I like Niri quite a lot, it actually got me into CoDZ shipping! (Im specifically speaking about Ultimis Niri)

Some could call Richtofen’s affinity towards Nikolai cute, some see it as manipulative. While I enjoy everyone’s interpretations on them, knowing that Richtofen is just straight-up evil, abusive and can be qualified as a sex offender*, I do not personally think he cares about the health of Nikolai’s psyche all that much. I think that Richtofen likes Nikolai because he’s a drunk, and maybe Richtofen has a thing for bigger guys, who knows, but Richtofen definitely feels power over Nikolai which is the main attractor. We all know Richtofen has a thing for feeling powerful, and it can be assumed that he’s not above taking advantage of an alcoholic for his own pleasures. Although I haven’t seen Nikolai reciprocate the same feelings before, he doesn’t push away Richtofen like Dempsey does, plus it’s been hinted that they have done a “thing” together*.

Though while I personally think that their relations are primarily sexual, I can imagine that they, or at least Richtofen if Nikolai doesn’t sober up, could grow a genuine fondness for each other over a certain amount of time. While Richtofen is veryvery evil and selfish, he did admit to missing his crew while he was in the Aether (lmk if you guys want me to find the quote for this), so I do believe that he can feel some kind of love for people other than his signature lust.

Even when there is a sobered Nikolai in Niri, it’s tough to imagine. He drinks to forget, when he’s sober he’s depressed. I’d imagine Richtofen does not like him depressed nor conscious to overpower him (at least in a non-sexual way). This relationship is inherently toxic, as is any with Ultimis Richtofen, but I love it for that.

As for Primis Niri, I never gave it much thought, I never saw an appeal to it sadly. It’s hard for me to ship Primis Nikolai with anyone because everyone else has such better pairings than with him.

* A lot of people still don’t like admitting that but we have literally seen him sexually assault Dempsey on multiple occasions.
