Darling,
The phases of the moon fill the abyss of the land above our heads and you have to have faith that what you learn in science class is honest when the idea that space is real; time is real; this is real. We are real. We donât really know if watch is round or if thereâs even other planets. We donât know that thereâs another galaxy and we have no fucking clue if thereâs aliens watching us and taking our cows in the night. Our whole lives are built upon faith and trust in the system of us.
We donât know that the sun is on fire or that everything revolves around it like its the most important person in the world. We donât know if the sun is frozen over and if this world is just floating in a dark room while a God watches over our ever move. Â
I donât know if I see perceive green the same way my brother sees purple and maybe thatâs why his favorite color is orange and mine is blue. Theyâre the same to us and we donât even realize it.
We believe what we are told.
I believed Santa and the Easter bunny and the Tooth Fairy knew there was a key hidden in the tree by the door and would come in and leave me surprises in the living room because I didnât feel comfortable with them coming in my room while I was asleep.
I believed that Katie in second grade got cooties from kissing Ryan under the slide at recess.
I believed that Bloody Mary lived in the bathroom at the movie theater downtown.
I believed that ripping her blouse open was the fastest way to her heart but that just made mine cold.
I believed that I was worth the gum under the seat.
I believed that you loved me.
Happy birthday, baby. Youâre no longer breaking my rule.
Sincerely Yours,
Niall
âIt didnât work out."Â
He had his head somewhere else and I honestly thought he was the reason the sun rose and set. He liked late night drives to clear his mind and he brought me so he felt less alone and I thought I was filling a void in him but he didnât need me. Heâs content with his sharp edges and dead ends. He thinks they give him his own edge, always asking questions makes him seem more beautifully spoken and he fed himself off the admirable looks he got when he started being philosophical. I think he got off on making everyone feel like they were lower; not as smart. He doesnât have any fluctuations in his emotions, he doesnât get mad or sad, he smiles a lot but itâs a front. He smiles because he has the ability to do so. Other than that, he is completely flat.
After our getaway in LA, I had a tour to go on. It was my first headlining tour and I spent the 7 weeks with 5 Seconds of Summer. Niall and I kept talking the whole 2 œ weeks leading up to the Phoenix show. He promised he would come out and see me then we could go out to dinner and hang out. The night of the show, I couldnât stop smiling. I changed my outfit 3 times because I wanted it to be perfect. I wanted him to look at me and think, wow.
I went out on stage after Ashton tried to hug me in his sweaty state. I duck under his arms and walk to the side of the stage while he retreats to the green room to cool off. Once my set is up, I walk out and look for him. The room is dark and thereâs almost 400 kids here and I canât see a lot so I donât feel bad about it. After the show is over, I walk outside with Calum and Michael to our tour bus. We take pictures with some fans and in the crowd that is slowly becoming smaller and smaller, I still donât see him. He didnât show up. Ashton and Luke join us a few minutes later and Ashton picks me up, carrying me onto the bus. I sit in the back where my bed is and dial Niallâs number. It rings a few times before I hear his mellow voice telling me to leave a message.
âHey, Niall! Itâs Seventeen. I missed you at the show tonight.. I get that you probably had something come up but it would have been fun to see you again. Iâm here until tomorrow afternoon, maybe we could have breakfast or something. I donât know, call me. Bye.â
Everyone except for Luke and I go to sleep. He sits beside me on the bed and frowns at me when I wonât tell him whatâs wrong.
âItâs okay,â he says, âyou donât have to tell me.â
I wonder why I canât be hooked on a boy like Luke. Why did I choose a flakey, emotionally detached, Irish boy.
âCan you just stay with me for a while? It will make me feel better.â He agrees and lies on my queen sized bed watching Cake Boss with me. All the guys complained because they had twin sized bunks and I had my own room and a big bed to myself.
The next morning, Luke is asleep in his bunk rather than on my bed with me. I check my phone, but my heart drops when I see I have no notifications. No calls from him, no texts.
I have a show at the radio station, 93.7 at 11 so I get up and get dressed, waking the guys while trying to find my jeans.
âYou alright there?â Michael asks with a laugh.
âFucking peachy. Where the hell are my black jeans?â I dig through my clothes, I donât know what happened but I went from sort of sad to really pissed off.
âCalm down, theyâre right here.â Luke jumps off the top bunk and picks them up off the floor behind me. âTake a breath.â
I frown and throw the pants on my bed and Luke pulls me into a hug.
âBreath. You can take a nap when you get back, alright?â I nod and take a step back. He smiles and leaves so I can change, shutting the sliding door behind him. I sit on my bed in my underwear for 15 minutes before finally pulling on my clothes. The guys decide to come with me downtown. At the station, I play 3 of my songs then answer a few questions.
   Are you single? Yes.
   Howâs the album going? Fine.
Howâs the tour going? Itâs going.
I play one more song before we leave. The single, the fan favorite, Hurricane.
As soon as we walk out of the studio, Michael decides he is hungry so we walk to the Five Guys across the street.
âWhat happened at the concert?â Luke asks me when we sit down. Calum and Ashton are ordering and Michael is going to the bathroom, so we are alone, but heâs almost whispering.
âNothing.â
âI canât help if you donât tell me.â
âIâm fine, Luke.â
I eat a few fries while they all talk. We get back to the bus at 3 and I go straight to my bed, but I donât fall asleep until after Ashton tells me theyâre getting dinner.
I wake up at 10 o'clock the next morning. I grab my phone off the nightstand beside me. Still nothing. I dial his number again. I get his voicemail again.
âHi, uh, Iâm in LA now. I know youâre probably like âoh, sheâs fine we can see each other laterâ and meeting up probably meant nothing to you but it meant everything to me. Fuck, now I sound clingy. Iâm going to hang up.â
I set my phone on the night stand again and stare at the ceiling. Where are we? Los Angeles. Right. Thereâs a show tonight. Ivy will be there. Oh my god, Ivy will be there. I check my phone for the time before changing. Once I open the door of the bus and breathe in the fresh air, I realize how stuffed up the bus is. The guys are playing soccer shirtless and I call Ivy. She answers after two rings. Thatâs a change from what Iâve been getting used to.
âIâm at the venue now, will you please come early?â I donât think I sound too desperate. But desperate enough that she is walking out of her apartment before we hang up. Where we are playing is 15 minutes from where she lives so I have 15 minutes to make up a reason as to why I needed her. I missed her. Sheâs my best friend. I have been surrounded by boys for a half month, I need to have girl time. Niall stood me up and is now ignoring me and my head is spinning and Iâm blaming myself for him being an asshole.
I stay in my trance of staring at nothing with nothing important in my head until Ashton runs over and picks me up. He runs around the playing field they arranged with dirty jeans and old converse marking the corners. The situation is so weird, Ashton carrying me around while he kicks around a ball, I feel like I should laugh, giggle and have fun. But I barely manage a smile. He sets me down in a folding chair that marks the middle of their field and runs away. I see Ivyâs vintage mustang park a few meters from us and I stand up. She gets out and runs towards me. It almost seems to go in slow motion. The dramatic moment when we run together and hug. The perfect movie situation. I hug her and she acts like Iâm going to float away. If she loosens her grip on me even a little bit, Iâll fly away to join the stars. Live in the sky.
âWhat happened? Are you okay?â She holds me down by my shoulders. I just look at her, trying to find the right words, and she nods. âLetâs go on the bus, yeah?â
I nod. I donât want to cry in front of them. Especially Luke, he will be even more worried about me than he already is.
We sit on my bed and I donât even get a word out before I break. I sob into her leather jacket and I donât stop until Iâm empty. She just rubs my back and stays quiet.
âWhat happened?â She frowns when I lay back against the wall with a pillow to my chest.
âNiall.â
âIâll kill him.â
âHe didnât show up to the show and now he wonât answer me when I call or text him.â
âI will murder him.â
âIâve been telling myself heâs just busy, but I know heâs not.â
âI will spread his ashes into a shark tank.â
âIâm so stupid for even associating myself with him.â
âOh, no no no no no.â She wiggles her finger in front of my face and takes off her jacket. I now notice how many rings she is wearing. âFirst of all, heâs stupid, not you. Second, heâs the fuckboy, not you.â
I donât know what else to say. I donât know what else I could possible even think. Itâs simple. I wasnât careful and I made mistakes. I fell in love with someone who doesnât really even know what the word love means. I gave him the power to ruin me with one single switch and crush my soul with two fingers. My second mistake was telling him I loved him. Third was jumping too fast into the idea of him. A pretty boy with a pretty mind and a mouth to match. I shouldnât have let him kiss me. I shouldnât have spent the night with him. I shouldnât have arranged for him to let me down.
Then again, itâs not my fault. Itâs easy to fall for blue eyes and a vibe like your favourite song.
âSeventeen.â Ivy shakes my shoulder and I sit up, rubbing my eyes. She sits beside me, a sad look in her eyes.
âYou gotta go to sound check.â I nod and get up. She walks with me into the venue and tries to make me laugh by horribly singing my song into the mic.
It makes me smile a bit, yeah. Her laugh makes me happy, at least sheâs having fun.
I change my clothes again before the show. Ivy and I watch 5 Seconds of Summer from the side of the stage and she whispers about how cute Ashton is. I smile and look at her. When theyâre done, the crew arranges my set then I go on. I talk and walk like nothing is wrong. Iâm the happiest I can be. Every so often, I glance over and see Ivy smiling at me. She gives me a thumbs up and I continue performing. Itâs a cycle. Whenever I feel like I canât do it, I wonât. I look at her and she smiles and gives me the boost I need to continue.
The show ends at half past 11 and we all decide it would be a great idea to go to Dennyâs after we meet fans. Ivy drives us in her car and I have to sit on Michaelâs lap in the front seat because there isnât enough room in the back. Of course, we go to the Dennyâs Niall âproposedâ to me at. I walk passed the booth we sat at and see a guy and a girl sitting there. She pulls a ring off of her mozzarella stick and laughs and cries. The proposal is horribly cheesy and stupid but it sounds so good. So mellow and amazing. He kisses her and for a half second he looks like Niall. We sit in a corner booth and Luke and Ivy make sure to sit next to me. When Luke asks me whatâs wrong, I rest my head against his arm and say Iâm tired and cold. He moves his arm so itâs around my shoulders and rubs my arm in an attempt to make me warmer. Itâs stupid but itâs a cute gesture. I order a pink lemonade and chicken tenders. It feels weird that nobody is commenting on the pink.
When all the boys are busy talking about something, Ivy looks at me.
âWhat happened?â
âHe fake proposed to me here. Iâm just kinda sad.â She nods and holds my hand until our food comes.
Itâs almost 1 when we pay the bill and leave. When we get back to the bus, Ivy calls one of her friends to bring her a bag of her stuff and to pick up her car. We wait until she gets there to leave and by then Michael, Calum and Ashton are asleep in their bunks. They make the switch then the three of us are sitting in my bed and we are on our way to San Francisco. The two of them start to make me feel better, I laugh at a stupid joke Luke makes and I fall off the bed which makes me laugh harder. My shell was beginning to crack. Then when I look out the window, we are passing the Staples Center. We pass the hotel and I sit on the bed. I feel like Iâve lost all my air and I excuse myself to get a drink of water. I shut the door behind me and down half of the bottle before taking my phone out of my pocket. His voicemail again.
âI know itâs late and all, thatâs probably why you didnât answer, but I just wanted to tell you that I passed the motel we stayed at in LA and it made me miss you. Call or text me when you have the chance. Bye.â
I put my phone in my pocket and take a deep breath. I collect myself before walking back to my room. I smile and crawl into the bed between them. Ivy turns off the lights and Luke uses the remote to turn on the TV. We watch CSI: Miami until Luke laughs and points out the window at the sun rising. He leaves to sleep in his bunk and Ivy and I fall asleep a few minutes after he leaves.
When Ivy and I wander around the town, I remind myself to never fall for a boy with a simple name ever again. Every time I hear someone say Niall or even fucking NyQuil, my head spins. I feel like someone is cutting off my airway. I canât breathe. I turn and expect to see him, but alas, I am met with a stranger.
Ivy and I have lunch at a coffee shop in the middle of town.
âMaybe itâs an addiction,â she says, âyouâre addicted to him.â
âI donât think you can be addicted to a person.â
âMaybe not, but what if youâre addicted to the feeling or memories or like, the idea of him.â
âAlright, elaborate.â
She sits up straight and takes a sip of her coffee before clearing her throat. âOkay, so you have only spent a very little amount of time with him,â she starts, âand in that time he has made you fall in love with his actions. Calling you pet names and telling you he wants to be alone with you, taking you to breakfast and to the beach. He got you wrapped around his little finger.â She holds up her pinkie and I sip my drink.
          âAlright.â
âSo either, heâs not actually all cute and beautiful minded and thatâs true idea of him youâre in love with rather than him, or he really is the pretentious asshole youâre in love with and youâre just living in the memories he created for you. The sneaking out and spending the night on the town and the vagueness he left you begging for more of. You love the whole feeling alive because we are doing something rebellious and youâre cute kind of thing.â
Sheâs right, that could be the case. But Iâm not sure anymore. I donât know if Iâm going crazy or Niall is the insane one.
âAlright, Iâll think about that.â When she excuses herself to the bathroom I find myself grabbing my phone again. One ring. Voicemail.
âHey! I just talked to Ivy. She told me Iâm addicted to you. She may be right. Addiction is at first maintained by the pleasure of it. Then as it intensifies, that pleasure turns into something to avoid pain. I guess you are my pleasure and my pain. Uh, call me back. Please.â
We walk back to the venue where thereâs already a line of people waiting. Ivy and I talk to them for a while before I go inside for sound check.
At some point after the show, after everyone has gone to sleep, I find myself sitting in the front of the bus with Gary, the driver. Heâs in his mid to late 30âs and judging from the ring on his finger, heâs married. I donât know much else about him.
I sit on the steps and stare out the windshield with him.
âWhatâs got you in the dumps?â He asks.
âA stupid boy. He stood me up and is now ignoring me.â
âCall him.â
âHe wonât answer; heâs ignoring me.â
âSo? Leave an angry voicemail with no intention of him ever hearing it just let it all out to let it out.â
âWhat if he hears it?â
âThen he knows heâs an asshole.â
I decide heâs right. Iâll just call and tell him how I feel. Let it out.
One ring. Voicemail.
âYouâre ignoring me so I donât even fucking care if you hear these anymore. After my show in San Francisco today, a girl gave me a flower and said itâs from you. I know it wasnât, it was too yellow.â
It wasnât as angry as I had hoped for, but it will do.
We have the next day off, a day to breath and a day for me to rest my voice. Iâve caught the flu and itâs the perfect opportunity for me to take a rest and get better while we drive to Portland. We stop at a grocery store to get food and go to the bathroom on solid land. Ivy drank too much wine last night and is still asleep on the bus when we get off. I wander down the magazine aisle, picking up an issue of Nylon and just as I was about to leave, I see him. Niall. Heâs on the cover of one of the magazines, Nylon. Heâs wearing all black, staring at the camera with dull eyes. I pick it up, staring at it.
âYou know him?â Luke asks, I feel him standing behind me and when I glance over my shoulder he is looking over me at the magazine.
âYeah, we..â I donât finish my sentence, drifting off as I open to the first page.
âYour ex?â
âNo, we didnât date. Heâs not an ex-boyfriend, but, uh, I guess heâs an ex-something. He just gave up on me before we could become something. Stopped answering me and leaving it at that.â
âWell he must either be blind or dumb.â He presses his lips together, as if heâs said something wrong. âNot that youâre just pretty I mean youâre the smartest person I know, ya know? Like itâs just visually youâre more obviously appealing because itâs hard to be appealed to a personâs mentality within talking to them for 2 minutes but you can see how attractive they are in half a second. Heâs an idiot. Iâll stop talking.â
I look at him and smile. âItâs alright. I donât mind.â
âOkay.â He smiles, craters forming in his cheeks.
I buy both magazines then walk to the bus with Luke. We sit in the front of the bus on the floor next to Gary. We read through the magazines together and he reads in a weird voice and makes random comments to make me laugh, and it works. It feels good to laugh and enjoy my time again. When Luke dumps his chocolate milk down the front of his shirt as we hit a bump, I laugh and he blushes. He retreats to his bunk to change and I check my phone. A text pops up and my heart stops. Seeing itâs from Wren, I frown and answer her before going into my contacts. Call. One ring. Leave your name and number.
âHey, I saw that youâre on the cover of Nylon. Thatâs pretty cool. I read what you said, about loving the fans and the experiences. I donât think thatâs right. You donât know how to love anything.â
âStill sad about that boy?â Gary asks. I sigh and lock my phone.
âA little. Iâll get over it.â
âLet it happen on its own. Rushing it will just hide it for a while. Let it heal, donât just cover it with a bandaid.â
I smile at him and lean against the seat behind me. Luke comes back wearing a black tank top and we carry on talking. We sit across from each other; I keep my legs criss cross and he rests his feet on either side of me.
âWhat are you doing?â
âGetting comfortable.â
I roll my eyes and play on my phone. Ivy appears a few hours later and sits beside me, resting her head on my shoulder. When we hear the rain, we know we have arrived in Portland. We all bring out our jackets and decide to explore the city. We stay huddled together, drifting from one shop to the next. When we are eating our McDonaldâs, Michael declares that we have to have a scavenger hunt. We all thought it was the best idea ever. Since thereâs 6 of us, we split up into 3 teams. I write the list of items we have to find on the back of the paper from the bottom of the tray. I get paired up with Michael and we keep the original list while the other teams have to take a picture. We all run out of the building and into the rain with no hesitation to search for the stupid items we chose. We have to find an item and take a picture of one of us with the item. Some are weird things like âget a picture of a dog and a guy with a mustache. Calum got very specific with what he thought we should be searching for. I spot a pet store and sprint to it. A baby pug is aimlessly wandering around the store while a guy in a red vest watches. Michael enters the store not too long after I do and howls when he sees that we have basically already got one down. I pick up the dog and quickly ask the guy for a picture. Right before we leave, I look back at the dog and smile. It would be nice to have a dog.
Michael and I run around the town trying to find a Monster High toothbrush, both of our albums, a human pyramid, and create a satanic ritual in the middle of a store involving a baby. We find a Target and run through the parking lot, now completely drenched from the rain. We grab the toothbrush first, Michael suggests that we should get all the items then take pictures at the end, and I agree.
We run to the electronics and stop one of the employees for help when we canât find the albums.
âWhat are you looking for?â
âThe entire discography of 5 Seconds of Summer and Seventeen.â
He gives us a look before leading us down the aisles to gather the albums. Michael and I wander to the toy aisles and look at items for our satanic ritual.
âDoes the baby have to be real?â Michael smiles holding up a baby doll. We sit in the middle of the aisle and create our pentagram with glow sticks and have the baby in the middle and our albums at each of the points.
âWe are so going to win.â I smile placing the toothbrush down.
âUm, hi, oh god.â I look up and see a few girls standing behind Michael.
âHi.â I say, but they looked too shocked to reply. Thereâs four of them. Hell yeah. âWill you take a picture of us real quick?â
The girl freezes, nodding vigorously and I hand her my phone. Michael and I join hands and the girl snaps the photo.
âDo you want to make a human pyramid with us for a picture?â Michael asks. I feel like we are just throwing curve balls at them, they probably just wanted a picture and we dragged them into our hunt. They agree though. We get one of the employees to take our picture, Michael has to be on the bottom and I get to be the top. I have to step on him to get up to the top through and that makes him complain.
âYouâre killing me, Sev.â
âOh, shut up.â We smile for the picture and I jump down before everyone stands up again.
âThank you for helping us!â I hug the girls and Michael lies in the floor groaning.
âMichael stand the hell up or else we are going to lose and Iâm going to have to murder you.â He slowly stands up and I create a group chat with Luke, Ivy, Calum and Ashton. I send them the photos while Michael takes pictures with the girls.
âHell yeah, we won.â I high five him and he laughs.
Luke sends back a frown and asking where we are. They all agree to meet us here in 10 minutes. Michael pushes me around in cart while I read Pinkalicious.
âYou guys cheated.â Luke and Ivy stand in front of the cart and I smile.
âYouâre just sore losers.â
âThatâs just mean.â Luke scowls and Ivy climbs into the cart with me. She sits on my lap and makes herself comfortable. When Calum and Ashton show up, Ashton calls to tell Gary to pick us up so we donât have to walk in the rain again.
We sit at the front of the store at the tables by the little cafe. It jolts out of the front of the building, and three of walls are windows. We watch the rain fall while we sip on our coffee and talk.
âSev, youâre the romantic here,â Calum says, âdo you believe in soulmates?â
âYeah. Itâs just nice to think someone out there is meant to be associated with me. Ivy and I are actually soulmates.â
âWhat about you and that guy from the magazine?â Luke asks taking a drink of his hot chocolate. It was an innocent question; I was calm enough about the situation before, so he doesnât know any better.
âUh, Niall and I were complicated. I think we may have been meant to meet so I could wake up and escape that pure, innocent bubble I live in where everyone is beautiful and honest and happy, and the world is all pinks and yellows with no grey or black or white or any color that doesnât evoke a beautiful and positive emotion. Iâm 21, I canât live that way and his being an asshole helped me realize that. Not everyone in this world is good.â
Ivy stares at me and smiles. Iâm slowly accepting and getting over him.
After we get on the bus and drive to the hotel, I sit with Ivy in my bed. Neither of us say a word, and thatâs fine. Thereâs no tension and nothing is in the air besides the moisture of the rain. We get checked in and Ivy and I share a room. She goes off into the hall after she gets a phone call, and I sit in the bed and turn on the TV. My mom calls not too long after. She asks me about Niall. I tell her we arenât talking. She sighs and tells me this is how the world treats people who have pure hearts. I need to just take a breath and realize my antics are irrational and the romanticization of everyone that calls me beautiful will get me hurt. I tell her itâs too late. Iâve learned from my mistakes and I wonât do it again. Sorry. Bye.
I hang up and dial. One ring. Voicemail.
âHey, Niall. You know, my mom makes fun of me because I said I believe in soulmates, but I believe in them because I am a romantic and I want to believe that somewhere in this huge, wild world there is a person who fits me. I want to believe that there is some strong magic in this universe that makes this real. That we are real. Iâve dug myself a 'nothing is realâ hole and Iâve been living in it and thatâs not healthy or happy. Even if I am not one of the lucky ones who had that person as their neighbor when they were a child, even if they died before I got to say hello. Even if I passed them at the grocery store once but neither of us was brave enough to talk to the other. Even if I already loved them and we fucked up. This soul exists, and if we were to ever meet at the right time, be alive at the right time, we would love each other the way people are meant to love one another. I thought you were my soul mate, but we all have to be wrong at least once right.â
We go from rainy city to rainy city. Portland, Seattle, Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg. Every city we stop in, rains, as if we brought the clouds with us. Wren joined us when we went through Seattle, which Iâm thankful for. I need both of them. After our show in Winnipeg, I walk out to meet fans alone. Thereâs not too many of them standing by the tour bus, but enough that it takes a few minutes to get through them. The guys come out a few minutes later and take pictures with everyone. Wren got a call from one of her managerâs right before I went on so she just went back to the bus where Ivy was since she wasnât feeling too well. Ivy is, of course, stretched out on the couch at the front of the bus, sound asleep when we get on.
Itâs 1am when Gary starts driving again. I head straight to my little room and shut the door behind me. I wash my face and change my clothes, finding things that will keep me busy. Iâm not really tired, or maybe Iâm too tired to sleep, so I watch Netflix as a last resort.
The episodes go on, one after another so I have no idea how many have gone by when I see the sun rising outside the window. I stare at it for a second before grabbing my phone. I know heâs never going to answer nor will he ever listen to these voicemails, but itâs more of a diary to me. As the days pass my feelings towards him change. Some days Iâm mad, others Iâm sad, and some days Iâm emotionless and content.
âHey, itâs 5am. I still havenât gone to sleep. Sleep is kind of hard when youâre thinking. Iâll be in New York at the same time as you next week and I think we should avoid each other. Itâs probably for the best. I might either slap you or cry. Maybe both. I should sleep. Iâm sorry.â
We stop in New York, planning to stay here for a few days to rest. I think that if I try to rest, Iâll end up dragging myself in a hole of disgust and sadness and I might call Niall or attempt to find him. To avoid all that, I arrange to go to a studio in Brooklyn. I am pulling on my jeans and requesting an ĂŒber when Luke walks in. Ivy and Wren are sitting on my bed, texting, but he seems to not even notice them.
âYou going somewhere?â He asks, standing beside me. His cologne fills my throat and I shrug.
âThe studio. I have a lot of built up emotion. I need to write.â I look around the room for my jacket.
âCan I come?â
âYeah, sure.â I donât look at him, just shoving the right side of my shirt into my pants and grabbing my phone.
âThe cab will be here in like 10 minutes, dudes.â I tap Ivy and Wrens knees and they glance at me before sitting up, their movements in sync.
I look at Luke, who is just standing back, watching me hurry around the room. He is smiling, his arms crossed across his chest. I ignore him, sitting on the bed and applying mascara, using my front camera on my phone as my mirror.
âOkay. We good? Iâm good.â I stand up and walk to the front of the bus. I feel anxious. I can feel it in my fingertips and my toes and my throat. My head is light but my shoulders are heavy. Maybe writing a few songs will cure me in a sense. The ĂŒber arrives after 5 minutes of standing outside. We bring Lukeâs guitar as well as my own and set them in the trunk before he takes his seat in the front with the driver, leaving the three girls to cram in the back. Thereâs a gentle drizzle outside, an almost laughable version of the rain weâve been experiencing lately.
âThereâs s'pose to be a huge storm today, I donât believe it. These news guys just spout shit, Iâll tell ya.â The driver says, looking at Luke.
âYeah? I donât watch the news,â he replies.
âOh, good. If you need some real information, the Internet is the best resource, 100%. You gotta get your facts straight though. Also, the weather app. Saved my life.â
Luke laughs, nodding at the driverâs gabber. I stay quiet, watching the water droplets fall down the window. When we get to the studio, I pay the driver, grab my acoustic guitar from the trunk and then walk inside. We get everything settled, then head into the room.
Ivy and Wren sit on the couch talking while Luke and I sit at the soundboard in our rolling chairs, staring at each other. I glance at my laptop, not even sure where to start. I have tons of ideas and words scrambling around in my head but I canât find a way to access them, which is giving me a headache.
âIt has to be haunting, ya know? Make your spine pinch, kind of stuff.â
While we think, Luke holds his electric guitar on his lap, plucking strings. I close my eyes and listen to him play random cords.
I know I want to write about Niall. I feel like thatâs the only real way to start to get over him. Say what I need to say.
âDo that again.â I sit up and he plays again. âI like that. Hold on. Keep playing that.â
âSeems like youâre onto something.â Luke smiles as I scribble down words. I think of ways to describe Niall and incorporate it into the song. After I get a verse down, I show Luke.
âI love it.â I smile and he continues playing, trying to help me get to the next part.
âSo with this guy, whatâs going on?â I sit back and stare at him. He seems concerned, his face is soft but his eyebrows are furrowed.
âIâm just searching for something thatâs not really there. I doubt it ever will be.â
The whole song is written in about a half hour. We record Luke playing his guitar then itâs my turn to record vocals. By now, Wren and Ivy have both fallen asleep on the couch. I stare at Luke through the glass and he gives me a thumbs up. He begins to play the track and I take a breath and start.
âYO WAKE UP WE FINISHED IT.â I throw my jacket at Wren and it hits her in the face. She sits up and stares at me. âWake up Ivy, we finished a song.â
We play the song for them, itâs just a stripped demo, but Iâm more than happy with it.
âThank you.â I smile and look at Luke. He returns it before quickly hugging me. When we were joking around with the grand piano in the booth, Luke proves that he can actually play piano and I make him play for me. We somehow write two more songs before Luke suggests we take a break.
We donât take a real break, rather just a break from writing. I stand in the recording booth with Lukeâs guitar and begin to play my song Hurricane. It was a joke at first, re recording my song, but I fall in love with the stripped down version.
âI kinda want everyone to hear this,â I say to Luke when we are replaying the songs.
âLeak it.â He laughs. I know heâs joking. But Iâm not.
I go onto my Soundcloud, uploading the song before Luke can stop me. I tweet the link and watch as my notifications explode. I turn off my phone and smile up at him.
âWant to go get food?â
He nods and I grab my laptop and guitar as I call for an ĂŒber. The driver arrives in 5 minutes and we set our things in the trunk. This time, I ride shotgun.
âWanna hear my new song.â
âOh my god, Seventeen.â
âSure.â I plug my phone into the AUX cord and go on Soundcloud. I let the song play and with the storm outside, it sounds entirely too dramatic but I love it.
âWell you better have a record deal, young lady.â He laughs and I smile.
âI do, donât worry.â He drops us off at the shopping center and we walk to the food court.
âWhere are the other guys?â I ask Luke when we sit down.
âProbably still at the hotel. I didnât tell them I was leaving.â
Luke offers to get us all food so Wren, Ivy and I stay and talk.
âDo you feel better now?â I nod and they smile.
âGood. No more Niall. No more sad Seventeen.â
âNope. I am a-okay.â Luke returns with 2 trays from Panda Express, balancing 4 drinks on the trays.
When we get to the hotel, we gather in my room. The other 3 guys wander in and suggest we go swimming and I donât disagree. I get in my swimsuit and follow them downstairs. I donât plan on swimming, maybe just sitting in the jacuzzi or on the steps of the pool. I donât want to get my hair wet.
I sit in the jacuzzi alone for a while, my head back and my eyes closed. The hot water pounding on my limbs is almost therapeutic.
âYou alright?â I donât have to open my eyes to know who it is. Iâve spent even enough time with him to recognize his voice.
âIâm okay, Luke. Just tired. A bit drained from todayâs affairs.â
âSame. I enjoyed it though. You have a very beautiful mind, I liked seeing a bit into it.â I blush, but try to pretend itâs just the heat from the water.
âThank you.â I sit up and open my eyes. He smiles at me quickly and I can see that heâs sitting on his hands. People have nervous habits, biting your nails, playing with your hair, touching your face, scratching your arm, or even blinking too fast. Iâve learned that Lukeâs is sitting on his hands.
âWhat are you so nervous about?â He looks at me and shrugs.
âA bit cold, innit?â
âShut up, itâs 106 degrees in this thing. Whatâs wrong?â
âNothing. Donât worry about it.â
I agree to leave it alone for now. When my hands start to wrinkle, I stand up and get out.
âIâm gonna go back to the room. Iâm exhausted.â They all say goodbye to me and I take the keycard and my towel.
I keep my hair tied up and decide to sleep with no pants on and in a big t shirt I donât recognize, but found in my suitcase. As soon as I pull it on, I sit on the bed. It smells spicy.
I remember him wearing this the day I met him. I was almost passed out but I remember the words.
I met god. She was black.
I could never forget that, I barely read it but it made me think when I got on the plane.
I quickly change into a different shirt and climb into bed. I turn my phone off airplane mode and click on his name in my contacts. One ring. Leave a message and Iâll get back to you.
âHey, hi. I was just about to go to bed and I uh, I wrote a song about you today. I wanted to tell you something, but that wasnât it. I just wanted you to know,â I roll over onto my side, closing my eyes and taking a deep breath, âI never pray, but I do for you. Have a good night.â
The next day, I get called to do a radio interview.
âYou just dropped a song last night with no warning, what happened?â
âI wrote that song yesterday, actually. With Luke from 5 Seconds of Summer. It was something I really needed to say so I put it out there for people to listen to my story.â
âWhat is that story?â
âWell, the song is called Ghost, and itâs basically about being in a relationship with someone who isnât as invested in it as you are. I create opinions and attach to things at a very accelerated speed and in this song the person was taking interest in me at what is actually a normal rate and I took that as theyâre not there, they arenât responding to me, they donât like me. Itâs basically about a person who holds a physical body but the 'ghostâ in them isnât there.â
âWow, who is this about?â
âBarack Obama, anyway.â
The interview lasts 10 minutes and I am mixing Michaelâs hair dye while I talk. After I hang up, I help him get the color through his hair then watch tv with Wren.
The tour goes by in a haze. Someone pressed fast forward and itâs one city after another. Maybe I took a pill and Iâm just half aware of whatâs going on.
The last show is in San Diego. Everyone walks around like zombies. Our shoulders slump and our mouths are half open. We drag our feet because we know the haven of touring is coming to an end. No more traveling with 10 of your favorite people and playing gigs all over North America. You wonât experience any of the cities the same way ever again.
After my set, Luke runs out on stage and picks me up. He is followed by Michael then Calum and Ashton. We all hug and I begin to cry. I donât want to go home. I donât want to leave them. We all take a final bow and I walk off stage holding onto Lukeâs arm.
When we get back on the bus, on our way back to LA, the 7 of us sit at the front of the bus talking. We reminisce over our favorite tour memories and funny stories. Our group slowly gets smaller as someone goes to bed. Eventually, itâs just Luke and I. I donât want to go to sleep, I feel like Iâve lost 2 weeks of my life, I donât want to lose any more time by sleeping through it. I donât know why Luke stays. He just sits next to me, not saying a word.
âArenât you tired?â I ask.
âNot really. Kinda sad, though.â
âWhy?â I frown, looking at him. He shoves his hands under his thighs and shrugs.
âIâll miss you.â
I smile, resting my head on his arm.
âIâll miss you too. But Iâm not leaving just yet. Iâll be staying with Ivy for a while, so until you decide to leave, we can still hang out.â He smiles and puts his arm around my shoulders. Itâs quiet for a minute.
âYouâre hands remind me of a dream,â he says, taking my hand in his.
âYou must be really tired.â I laugh.
âI guess so.â He speaks so soft, but it rattles my bones. I tell myself he is just tired. Heâs tired. I close my eyes and move into the warmth of Luke.
âWould it be okay if I fell asleep on you because I think my if I stand up I might fall.â
âYeah, itâs alright. I donât mind.â
I wake up on the couch at 4:15am, unable to get back to sleep. I donât want to watch Netflix, but then again, I donât want to lie here in the dark. I stand up and tiptoe to the bunks. I pull Lukeâs curtain and see him sleeping on his stomach, his head turned towards me.
"Luke.â I poke his cheek until he opens his eyes.
âSeventeen?â He sits up, hitting his head on the ceiling of his bunk. Luckily he sleeps on the top so he didnât wake anyone up.
I cover my mouth to stop my laugh. âAre you alright?â
He doesnât reply, instead he just jumps down from his bunk. His hand covers the place where he hit it and I walk back to the front of the bus. He follows me.
âAre you okay?â
âYeah. You can go back to sleep if you want.â
âSlamming my face on the ceiling woke me up. Whatâs up?â
He lies next to me on the couch, his legs over my lap, and I smile.
âI couldnât sleep.â
We both stare at the ceiling for a while.
âI had a dream that I was being chased by a t-Rex wearing a diaper,â he tells me.
âWhy was the t-Rex wearing a diaper? Do they even make diapers that big?â
âIt must have been custom made.â I laugh and pull my feet onto the couch. He lays on his back, his arm under the pillow heâs resting his head on and he just stares at me. âThe sunrise coming through your hair makes it glow. Kinda makes you look like an angel.â
âAn angel?â
He sits up and touches my hair. âYeah. But youâve gotta be careful for the people that will seek you out to collect your feathers.â
âYou should probably go to sleep, youâre getting pretty emo.â I smile at him and he laughs.
âOkay. Iâll sleep.â He lies back down and closes his eyes. After I move around, getting comfortable, I do the same.
We wake up when the bus comes to a very sudden stop and Luke and I fall towards the front. I laugh when I end up under Luke, quickly standing up and running my hands through my hair.
âOh, I need to pack my stuff. Shit.â I walk to the back where Ivy and Wren are asleep on my bed. I gather my things and shove them in my bag. When Iâm finished, I wake Ivy and Wren up and tell them to get up because weâre back in LA. Ivy calls for a cab, still half asleep and lying on my bed. I ignore her and return to the front where Luke is sitting with Ashton and his stuff. I sit between them and scroll through my Twitter. When everyone else emerges, we say goodbye to Gary and gather outside the bus. I say goodbye to all the guys, Luke is last. He leans down, hugging me. Heâs a foot taller than me, so heâs hunched over while Iâm standing on my toes.
âIâll miss you.â
âIâll miss you too.â
âCall me whenever, okay?â
I nod and hug him again. This time, he doesnât have to lean down. âOkay.â
âOkay. I love you,â he says holding my shoulders.
âI know. I love you too, Luke.â I smile up at him and he quickly returns it. When the cab arrives, Ivy, Wren and I shove our backs in the back and get in.
âI love you.â Wren mocks in a horrible Australian accent.
âOkay, I donât like you.â
She laughs and I roll my eyes. Arriving back at Ivyâs apartment, I lie on her couch and stretch. Itâs nice to be on solid ground after such a long time on the road.
That night, Ivy and Wren run to the store for popcorn and candy for our scary movie night and I stay back to rest for a while. Iâm tired of driving around. I would prefer to avoid being in a moving vehicle for a little while. For the first time in weeks, I dial his number.
âHey, Iâve been thinking and maybe Iâve just romanticized you and the thought of you to the point that youâre not who I thought you were, I made you up. You arenât real.â
We stay with Ivy for a week, then Wren and I fly back to Seattle. My album is to come out in 4 months so my team and I have a shit ton of promo to be doing.
It comes out in 4 months and itâs not even done yet.
I practically live in the studio for 2 weeks. My manager helps me turn Ghost into what I call a shimmering pop song and record the rest of the songs. We release the new version of Ghost and it is somehow a hit. I sob when I hear it in the radio.
The next month, I am wearing a short blue wig and sitting in a Tokyo themed hotel room. I said I wanted left of center and thatâs what Iâm doing. For the Ghost video, I wanted to show a relationship that leaves you asking questions, so thatâs what was arranged. It takes place in a neon themed hotel and my love interest wears a pink wig
The video is released 2 months later.
I wonder if Niall is going to watch it; if he knows who the song is about.
The day I have my flight to LA for more promo and album stuff, I donât want to get out of bed. I donât want to get on a plane and I donât want to get my picture taken for hours on end. But of course, I get up. I go to the airport and I get on a plane.
Ivy is standing with Luke and Michael when I walk down the terminal. A smile grows on my face and run to them. I hug them all before asking where Ashton and Calum are, which Luke replies with a shrug.
âThere wasnât enough room in the car.â
I make Luke and Michael sit in the back seat with my suitcase while I talk to Ivy.
âNiall tweeted about you.â She tells me.
âWhat the fuck.â
âIt said like youâre the ghost or something like that. Itâs low key about you.â
âLetâs burn him.â
âAgreed.â We drive through Wendyâs to get frosties but Luke and Michael decided they were hungry so I bought them both meals.
âYouâre an angel,â Michael says, patting my shoulder.
âJust eat your food.â
Ivy pulls up to the gate and types in the code before driving into her complex. Luke carries my bag up the stairs to Ivyâs third floor apartment. She doesnât even have time to get her key in the door before Calum throws it open and yells a welcome home.
I canât stop smiling when I hug them and we sit on the floor of her living room. We talk about our careers and Michael rests his head on my thigh, holding onto my leg like a child with his favorite stuffed animal. I run my fingers through his hair as we talk.
âI have a photoshoot in a few days and thatâs all I have to do, I think.â
âCool, so this is almost a real family reunion now,â Michael hugs my leg tighter and I pat his cheek.
A half hour later, Ivy asks me if I will run to the store and pick up her groceries. She got an emergency call from work and has to go in ASAP. I tell her I can do that, no problem. She calls a cab so I have her car and I wait until she leaves to leave. The guys are neck deep in an episode of Americaâs Next Top Model when I announce that Iâm going to the store and if you want to come, you have three seconds to decide. Luke stands up and follows me out the door. He giggles when he sees that I have to move the seat up to drive.
âShut up.â
He googles the directions to the closest store and directs me.
âI drive better at night. I do everything better at night really.â I explain, glancing at Luke.
âIs there a specific reason?â
âNothing is a priority. Everyone is tucked away in under warm blankets and clouds in their heads that cushion their dreams.â
He looks at me and smiles.
âSituations have more meaning anyway. Like spending the night with someone is way more explicit than in daylight. Getting drunk and talking about God is a really deep conversation at 2am but at 2pm youâre getting excommunicated from your church and your mother doesnât call anymore.â
At the store, Luke reads the items off the list to me and I add them to the cart.
âRed grapes.â
âLuke, we already got grapes.â
âWe got green grapes, we need red grapes.â Â
I grab a bag of grapes and start walking again. The cart is close to overflowing when we finally make it to the checkout. Luke stares at me while I watch the lady ring up our items.
âI think sheâs messing with us. Why does she need a kiddie pool and 15 party bags of skittles?â
âShe doesnât.â
âWhat?â
âI just said that as a joke, I didnât think you would go with it.â Heâs grinning, thinking heâs the funniest guy in the world.
âOh my god. I hate you so much.â I donât take it off. Iâll let him have his fun. I slide my card and kick Luke when he tries to watch me type in my PIN number.
âWhatâs that for?â He pouts.
âHow do I know you wonât go out and buy a full sized pool and 2500 party bags of skittles?â
I try to buckle the kiddie pool into the backseat while Luke sets all the bags in the trunk. He finishes before me and stands beside the passenger side door and laughs at me. I flip him off and put all my weight into trying to click the seatbelt in.
âDone,â I say, finally getting the buckle to click.
âWe good now?â I nod and climb back into the front seat. I plug the AUX cord into my phone and begin to play my music.
âI drive around when I need to think, sorry,â I tell Luke when he asks where we are going.
âItâs okay, keep driving.â
âI donât think a lot of people I know truly like me. I think most people only like versions of me Iâve spun for them. The easy, constructed in their minds version of me.â
âI like you.â
âThank you, Luke.â
We donât say anything, but I know what heâs thinking. He wants to know what else Iâm thinking about.
âThat guy from the magazine,â I start, getting his attention again, âNiall. He just stopped talking to me. Stopped answering his phone and left it like that.â He doesnât say anything, just looking at me. âI heard that the longer someone stays gone, the less likely they are to come back. I donât know if I want him to come back.â
âI donât know what to say,â Luke whispers.
âJust tell me how I was so easy to throw away. I canât sleep sometimes because Iâm just wondering what I did wrong.â
âYou didnât do anything wrong.â We come up to a stoplight and stare at my hands in my lap.
âThen why did he leave?â I look at him and his face falls. His expression softens and I wipe under my eyes.
âI donât know why, but thatâs not your fault.â
I start driving again and look at Luke. âIâm sorry.â
âItâs okay. I donât mind.â
Luke is so easy to be around. Iâve never seen him angry, and I think his favorite thing to say is itâs okay. I donât mind. I stop at a green light and stare at the light until it turns red.
âHeâs an asshole,â Luke says.
âI know.â I drive aimlessly for a while. When we get back to the apartments, itâs almost 10 and Ivy is back.
âDid you get lost?â Ashton laughs.
âYeah, a bit.â I say. Ivy looks at me like she wants to talk so I look back at the guys. âBought a kiddie pool. Go crazy.â
I join Ivy in the kitchen and set all of the bags of food on the counter.
âWhat happened?â
âWe drove around for a while talking.â
âTalking.â
I nod and she purses her lips and puts a box of macaroni in the cabinet.
I help her unload the rest of the groceries and decide I need fresh air. I sit on her balcony and stare at the trees. For the first time in 6 months. I dial his number and wait for the voicemail message.
âHey, Iâve been thinking and I think itâs amazing how in 6 months I went from thinking youâre God to thinking youâre the fucking antiChrist. Youâre exhausting. Bye.â
When I walk back inside, I am told we are having a scary movie marathon. Somehow, I didnât expect to actually watch Scary Movie. I get distracted, staring at the orchids beside the TV.
I remember Niall telling me about how Iâm like the sun. Heâs right, Iâm the sun and heâs the rain and because of him I have orchids growing in my throat and the sliver of light Iâve let in allow the flowers continue to grow and block my airway.
âSeventeen.â I am pulled out of my daydream and look at Ivy. âDo you want to make popcorn?â
I donât even give them an answer, standing up and walking into the kitchen. I open the box of popcorn and pull out 3 bags. I sit in the counter, waiting for all of the bags to pop.
âI was sent in here to make sure youâre okay.â Luke stands beside me and I smile at him.
âIâm good. Just making a lot of popcorn.â He doesnât leave when I tell him. He stands beside me, staring at the microwave across from us. âCome here.â I grab his hand and pull him in front of me. I wrap my arms around him and rest my head on his chest. âThank you.â
âFor what?â He hugs me back anyway.
âYour presence makes me happy and Iâve really needed that these last few months. Thank you.â
When the last bag of popcorn is done, I dump it in the bowl and walk back to the living room. I sit beside Ivy and hand the bowl to her. show up at the front door at 5am and I let them in, sitting on the kitchen table while the team they brought start wrapping my hair in curlers.
I ask the 5 of them to come with me to the photoshoot, and they agree. My managers are getting everything situated when Luke and Ashton decide to make an appearance.
âMorning.â Ashton mumbles, pouring himself a cup of coffee. Luke follows him and they sit in chairs in front of me, Luke eating cereal because he says he canât stand the taste of coffee.
âAre you excited to hang out in the desert with me for a few hours?â One of the girls starts rubbing a moisturizer on my face and I close my eyes while she does it.
âYes, 100%.â Ashton says taking another drink of his coffee. The two of them watch intensely as makeup is applied to my face.
âWhatâs that do?â Luke asks, pointing at the contour palate sitting beside me.
âDefinition.â He sits on the table beside me and stares at my cheek.
At 8, we all get into the black van they drove over for us, the hair and makeup team taking another car.
I had 4 outfit changes through the whole 3 hours of shooting.
We get dropped off at Ivyâs apartment at 1 and I take it upon myself to make popcorn chicken for lunch.
âFuck, guys,â Ivy says sitting on the couch once we all get our lunch, âwe should go camping, I found a spot up kinda by Sevâs place. Letâs road trip.â
âWhat made you think of this?â Ashton asks.
âI started thinking about fun friend things and I realized I havenât been camping since seventh grade and I need to become one with nature.â
âI mean, Iâm in,â Michael agrees. Everyone gets on board and Ivy calls Wren to ask if sheâs down for it.
âFuck yeah, Iâm down for this. When?â We decide to go in two weeks, it gives us time to get everything together for it.
âWe may need to rent a car, we wonât all fit in your mustang for 20 something hours  .â I tell Ivy. She agrees and we all spend our afternoon planning this trip.
The night before we are set to leave, we make a trip to Walmart in the van we rented to drive up to Washington. Calum and I set out to find a tent that will fit all of us comfortably and bug spray.
âIs a 13 person tent big enough? So 13 normal sized people is like 8 of your sized people, right? Yeah, so this will work.â
Calum lifts the tent and sets it in the cart while I grab 8 cans of bug spray. I have only been camping once. It was in 6th grade when I went with Ivy and I was feasted upon by bugs for 3 days; I wonât make that mistake this time.
We find Luke and Michael in the candy aisle grabbing 12 bars of chocolate. They have 4 boxes of graham crackers and 3 bags of the square marshmallows made for camping.
âYou guys are gross.â
Michael shrugs and grabs 2 more bars of chocolate. We walk together to the checkout and I pay for everything. Luke hands me a $20 when we start loading everything into the car.
âIâm just going to use that to buy you guys food, you know that right.â
He shrugs and I take the bill just to give it to Michael who I tell to pass onto Luke. Ivy and Ashton stayed at her apartment to get everything ready there, so I drive back to her place and only carry the chocolate in so it wonât melt.
âNow that I think about it, we should have waited to buy the stuff for s'mores.â
We leave at 2am. Ivy drives first, Ashton sitting in the passenger seat to keep her awake.
We rented an 18 passenger van so Michael and Calum lie down on their own benches and Luke and I share a bench. I keep my knees tucked to my chest and my blanket around me.
âThis will be fun, yeah?â Luke smiles, looking at me.
âMhm,â I hum. I am somehow exhausted, not really awake enough to have a full conversation with him. I am woken up at 10am by Ivy asking if I want to drive now, because both her and Ashton are about to pass out. I agree and Luke switches places with Ashton as well. Luke makes fun of me once again when I have to move the seat up.
âYouâre just freakishly tall, stop being so mean to me.â I pull back onto the highway and he giggles. He sticks a disk into the CD player and the beginning of one of their songs starts playing. âNice.â He smiles and I pay attention to the road rather than him. At 2, we stop for food in Roseburg, Oregon. I find a Taco Bell and order everyone food. This time, Ivy insists on paying. I try to eat a taco while driving and it doesnât work out because I spill all over the wrapper in my lap.
âCan I drive when we get to Portland?â Luke asks and I shrug. Why not? I eventually finish my taco and throw the wrapper back into the bag. I sing along to the radio while Luke talks to Ivy and Ashton about something I donât quite catch. Once we arrive in Portland, I stop at a gas station to switch with Luke. I fill up the tank while everyone goes inside to get snacks from the convenience store. I try to tell myself Iâm doing the important job of filling the tank, but I was really just afraid of going inside. I have a fear that my fantasy from last year will come to life and Iâll meet Niall in the checkout line of a gas station store.
Ivy brings me back a bag of Goldfish and a chocolate milk. I end up in the passenger seat because everyone else is so comfortable having their own space with the benches.
I sit cross cross on the seat and sing along to my album while Luke focuses all his attention on driving.
âIâm more used to everything being switched,â he explains.
âThatâs fine. Just stay calm, youâre doing perfect.â
He smiles at me and I continue eating my Goldfish. He wants to drive the rest of the way to Mount Vernon where we are going to be camping and I tell him thatâs fine. I tell him about where I grew up.
âI say I grew up in Seattle but itâs actually a little town called Arlington, itâs a bit of a Friday Night Lights town so my mom always told me about how everyone there is proud of me. Itâs nice to have all that support, ya know?â He agrees and I go off about all my favorite places and weird childhood memories. I go on the whole 3 hours but he doesnât stop me. I donât even think he minds me talking for hours on end.
When we drive through Seattle, we stop and pick up Wren at her apartment. She sits in the first bench behind Luke and I. She joins in on talking about the rain and trees.
Once we are in Mount Vernon, I have to google where we are going from there.
We drive through a few blocks of just trees before we find the camp sites. We booked a site that leads right up to a cliff. Luke parks the car between 2 trees and we all carry the stuff to the picnic table. Wren and I clear a spot for the tent and then sit in our camping chairs watching the guys set up the tent.
âKeep up the good work, boys.â Ivy yells sticking a straw into her Capri sun.
âYo, hook a bitch up.â Wren reaches towards the box in Ivyâs lap and Ivy throws one at her.
The three of us sip on Capri sun, watching them struggle with the tent. Once itâs up, all because of Ashton actually knowing what was going on and making the others do what he says, we start setting up where we are going to sleep. Michael claims the little entrance room to be his own and I end up between Luke and Ivy. I roll out my black sleeping bag over the mat I brought and make my space super organized with my backpack of clothes at the foot of the mat and my pillows neatly at the top.
âDude did you seriously buy that just for this?â Calum yells and laughs and I walk to where Michael is going to sleep to find him cuddled up in a pizza sleeping bag. I laugh at how happy he looks.
I tell him thatâs a pretty good price and he dramatically thanks me for being the only one who will support him. At least his canât be mixed up with anyone elseâs now. I sit on my almost bed and tie up my hair.
Luke sits beside me and smiles, âItâs still weird seeing you with blonde hair.â
âI always forget itâs blonde.â I pull at a strand that fell from my very lazy attempt at a bun. A few days ago, I decided to dye it again. I felt like I should give the cool colors a rest and join the normals by going blonde. Everyone was surprised when I came out of the bathroom with straight blonde hair when I had a fading green mess of hair hours before.
âAs soon as I get used to it youâre going to dye it blue.â He laughs and I shrug and smile. I like blue.
For dinner, Ivy and Ashton go into town to buy something for us to eat. When theyâre gone, we all wander to the cliff. Itâs about a 20 foot drop into a lake.
âWould we die if we jumped?â Michael looks to me for an answer to his ridiculous but also very relevant question.
âDepends on how deep it is.â
So thatâs how Luke and I were pressured into going down to the water to find out how deep it is so Michael and Calum can jump. We take off our shoes on a big rock right in front of the water and Luke picks me up when we have to walk over the rocks, saying he will keep me safe from harm. Â I laugh when he almost falls. He stands still for a second, making sure heâs balanced before he tries to walk over the slippery rocks again.
Iâm not upset when we really do fall and I land on my butt in the shallow water. I laugh through the pain of landing on a rock while Luke frowns. The water goes from really shallow to what seems to be pretty deep, so I throw a good sized rock over where they want to jump. I barely hear it hit the rocks at the bottom.
âI mean I think youâre good it seems deep enough.â
They yell and cheer and Luke carries me back to the land. This time he doesnât fall.
I sit with him and Wren in our camping chairs, sipping on Capri Sun and watching Michael and Calum run and jump off the cliff then run up the hill to do it again.
âDo they not get tired?â Wren asks, studying them.
âThey have endless energy, itâs fascinating.â I sip my Capri sun and Luke laughs at us just as the van pulls up beside us. Ivy gets out of the passenger seat and sets a bag on my lap. Inside is literally just french fries.
âWhat is this?â
âDinner? Thereâs 5 burgers and 5 orders of chicken tenders in these, as well.â Ashton holds up 3 more bags and Wren yells for Calum and Michael to stop jumping off the cliff and come eat dinner. We gather around the picnic table and I eat fries while Michael talks about getting a fish in his swim trunks.
When the sun goes down, Michael and Calum change and we all wrap ourselves in our sleeping bags and Luke and Ashton start a fire. Once itâs going strong, Luke sits beside me and we use the metal prongs Ivy found at Walmart for us to roast marshmallows.
âI am so prepared to become a tree.â Michael says, letting out a weak chuckle and jerking his marshmallow into the flame. I watch mine carefully, not wanting it to burn. When itâs ready, I make Luke help me get it between graham crackers and chocolate. He holds his stick between his knees and basically does all the work of building my s'more for me.
âThank you.â I lean back in my chair, listening to everyone talk. Michael being Michael, ends up yelling everything he says and that brings a group of guys to creepily walk through the trees and over to us. I unconsciously move towards Luke as they approach the fire.
âI donât want to ruin your bitch fest, but some people like the quiet.â The guy with the pink hair says with a smile. I catch onto his accent after about the 5th word.
âSorry, heâs just a large child who ate too many s'mores. We will try and control him.â Wren pulls Michael head to her chest and pats his head. âYou can leave now.â
He looks at her and winks before leaving with his friends.
âThat was creepy, as all get out.â Ivy says frowning.
âI would protect you.â Ashton smiles and Ivy looks at the fire.
âYeah, alright.â
We talk for a while and when we are all falling asleep on each other, we decide going back to the tent would be a good idea. Ivy and Wren put out the fire while I brush my teeth. They join me as soon as theyâre done and I rinse my mouth out with water from someoneâs water bottle and hang out with them until theyâre done.
We kick all the boys out of the tent so we can change and when we go back out to get them, theyâre standing around talking in just their boxers. 5 minutes later, we are all in our sleeping bags and Michael is snoring. Everyone falls asleep soon after, but I canât.
Iâm shivering in my sleeping bag. Itâs my first time camping in 10 years and of course, I didnât bring enough blankets. It doesnât help that Iâm afraid we are 2 seconds away from being attacked by a bear.
âAre you okay?â Luke whispers. I close my eyes and cover my face.
âIâm freezing.â I hear the zipper of his sleeping bag and him quietly mumble a âc'mereâ and moves so thereâs room for me. I waste no time crawling in with him. His sleeping bag is a little bigger then mine, but not much. He lies on his back and I am on my side with my head on his chest.
âThank you.â Luke is the perfect temperature and I try to soak it all up while I can. I can barely stand the stiffness of the mat below us, but from how comfortable he seems to be, I donât comment on it. He must like it.
I look up at the sky. They didnât put on the rain cover, so we have a perfect view of the moon and stars.
âHow do you think the Galaxy was made?â He whispers.
âEnergy. It just kinda expanded, I think. Maybe that energy became so compact, it created planets and stars.â
âThatâs a good theory,â he says, âI donât know what to think. Iâm kinda afraid to know the truth.â
âWhy?â
âI grew up being told God made everything, but it arouse questions nobody would give me a straight answer to and now Iâm afraid to have my questions answered.â
âI understand that, like who made god, or what happens when we die?â
âYeah. I want to believe we go on and live again, because I donât want this to be everything. I donât want to think I ruined my one chance.â
âYou havenât ruined anything, Luke.â I sit up a bit, looking at his face.
âI have. I missed so many chances and now Iâm afraid to even try to make up those lost moments.â He stares at me. I frown and run my fingers through  his hair.
âThereâs no need to be afraid.â He looks at me again. Neither of us say a thing and itâs so quiet, the world seems to be humming.
The humming gets louder as we get closer and everything is silent when he stops right before my lips.
âOh, hi guys.â We both look at Michael. He stands between Ashton and Ivy, holding his phone. âI mean, I was looking for toilet paper, but this is cool too. Nice, nice.â
âWe were just talking,â I tell him. He laughs and turns around. âItâs in the backpack on the table.â
He shoots me a thumbs up over his shoulder and ducks back into his area. I hear the zipper and then twigs snapping and him groaning.
âHe fell.â
âHe totally fell.â
The next morning, we have pink lemonade and ham for breakfast.
âWe should go into town,â Wren suggest, âwe could go to the mall or something.â
Once breakfast is cleaned up and we are all dressed, we get into the car and Wren drives us to the mall. I wander with Wren and Ivy, which leads to me buying a new outfit from H&M. We run into the boys in the food court and we regroup.
I end up alone with Luke.
We walk around, through the stores and eventually outside. A tattoo parlour is across the parking lot and I wander towards it while Luke talks about a new song he was writing.
âYeah, I just have the best so far.. No lyrics⊠But Iâll get there, ya know?â
âYeah, I get you.â I open the door and smile at Luke.
âLuke, do you wanna get a tattoo?â He stares at me, wide eyed and frowns.
âI mean, I donât know.â He runs the back of his neck and looks around.
âThatâs alright, you donât have to. Do you know what a stick n poke is?â
âYeah, Alex showed me how to do those a while ago.â
âWould you give me one?â
My question seems to catch him off guard.
âY-Sure. Yeah.â
âOkay.â I smile at him and walk to the counter, buying a needle and ink. âIâm trusting you.â
âAlright.â I shove the items into my H&M bag and hold onto his arm as we walk back to the mall.
âPeople are watching us,â he points out. And heâs right. Thereâs girls staring at us, taking pictures and talking to each other.
âMaybe we should make out to throw them off.â He stops walking, thinking about my comment, and I pull on his arm. âI was joking, come on.â
We return back to the food court and I buy a smoothie. They call it a brain booster but it just has strawberries, banana and blueberries in it. We sit on a bench outside Lush and pass it back and forth.
A few minutes after we finish, I get a text from Ivy saying theyâre ready to go whenever we are. We meet them at the entrance we came in.
Back at camp, I keep the bag with my new clothes and new tattooing equipment in it by my pillow. Wren wandered off to find more firewood while the rest of us sit around the campsite. Michael is wandering around, yelling into his phone. I donât think he realises thereâs no service here. But that doesnât stop him.
âMOM! I AM HERE! ARE YOU THERE? MOM?â
I tune him out after a while.
âOkay, so donât be pissed but the snotty boy from last night just invited us to get drunk on Fireball and Smirnoff, so Iâm down if you guys are.â Wren sets a few sticks and logs beside me when Michael finally hangs up.
âIâm not really feeling it,â I tell her. The rest agree to go and they tell me goodbye while they walk down the path to the next campsite over. I lie on the table for a while, staring at the trees above me.
âI want to get a tattoo.â I scream, falling off the table and onto the dirt. âOh, shit. Iâm sorry.â
Luke kneels beside me, just looking at me.
âItâs fine.â I stand up, brushing myself off. I get my bag from the tent and sit on the table with Luke.
âFuck, I canât believe we are doing this.â
I glance up at him through my eyelashes and smile. We are sitting side by side on the picnic table, his right arm in my lap. I clean the spot on the back of his arm, just above his elbow.
âHereâs to teenage memories.â
âYouâre not a teen.â
âBut you are.â I use a regular pen to draw the little ghost. When itâs done, I open the tattoo needle and ink I bought from the parlour by the mall. I take the pencil from behind my ear and push the end of the needle into the space between the eraser and aluminium around it.
âReady?â
âNo. Letâs do this.â He watches me as I dip the needle into the ink and begin outlining the ghost.
âWe are so clever,â I say, finishing the outline.
âI know, right?â Like smiles and I hunch over once again to finish the eyes. Once itâs done, I wrap his arm in plastic wrap and tape it into place.
âYour turn.â He grabs my arm and repeats what I did in the same place on the back of my arm
âOne more tattoo to your collection.â He smiles.
âYeah, but this one means something.â
Once itâs done, he wraps my arm in plastic wrap and tapes it into place.
âWe are spiritually connect now.â He smiles and I frown. âIâm sorry, it just had to be said.â
âIt was funny.â I jump off the table and walk towards the cliff. He sits beside me and we let our feet dangle off the side.
âI love you, thank you for always being there.â I rest my head on his shoulder and he rests his head on mine.
âYou smell like vanilla.â
âItâs my dry shampoo.â
âI like it.â
âThanks.â
We decide it would be a good idea to wander around through the trees, but we stay close to the cliff so we can find our way back. Just after we find a little waterfall, my phone vibrates in my pocket. I assume a text from Ivy just came through, so I glance at my screen. I immediately feel sick. My head begins to hurt and I feel like Iâve spent the last 20 minutes shoving rocks down my throat.
âYou alright?â Luke looks at me and I shove my phone in my pocket.
âFine.â I smile and walk up to him. Everything begins to hurt and I donât want to walk anymore. I donât want to think about the picture of Niall that everyone is mentioning me in on Twitter and I donât want to be sad about him anymore. I tell Luke Iâm tired and we stop, sitting on the edge of the cliff.
âYou alright?â He asks, staring at me. My head is fuzzy and I seem to lose all sense good decisions, so I lean into him. Kissing him before I can decide otherwise. He is frozen for a second then quickly kisses me back. He stops me when my lips seem to have stained his own.
âWhy are you doing this?â He asks.
âI like you.â
âOkay, why are you doing this?â I look down at my lap, feeling disgusting for using Luke. Even if it was only for a few minutes.
âI canât believe I just did that.â I shake my head and stare out over the water. âIâm sorry, that was gross and stupid. Not that youâre gross, like me kissing you just because was gross.â
âItâs okay. I get that youâre upset.â
âOh, you do?â I look up at him and he smiles.
âMhm, I know you. Iâve spent the last 7 months with you.â
âAlright, continue.â I smile.
âI saw the picture, of your ex. I donât know why everyone is tweeting it to you, but just ignore it. Delete Twitter and Instagram, at least for the trip. You shouldnât be sad on such a happy and fun family trip, itâs not fair to you.â
âDid you just call this a family trip?â
âYeah, we are all squad bros.â He sits on his hands and I follow his gaze out over the water again.
âI just kissed my squad bro.â Neither of us can stop from laughing.
âJust make sure next time you kiss me itâs for a good fucking reason.â
When the sun goes down, we are making our way to where the rest of our friends have been for hours.
âI think we belong together, on some level, ya know?â
âYeah?â He glances at me, still walking towards the next camp.
âYeah. Not sure how we fit just yet, but it feels like our souls were meant to meet. We just work.â
He smiles at me, and I continue.
âIt was so clear, right from the beginning. We clicked instantly, and setting just said, this is whatâs supposed to happen. You helped me make a life in a way.â
âYou had a pretty good life before me.â
âBut you made it better,â I say. âIt makes me believe in something, whether it be fate or coincidence or just luck. Maybe soulmates.â
We make it into their camp and see Michael and Calum by the fire.
âDude, whereâs everyone else?â Luke asks.
I sit down in the chair next to Michael and Luke sits beside me.
âWren is going off on Zachary, the pink haired one, and everyone else is trying to get her to not scratch his eyes out.â
âWhat happened?â
âNot sure.â He takes a bite of his s'more. âWhat did you guys do?â
Luke and I share a look.
âNothing.â
He finishes his s'more just as Wren steps into view. Ashton and Ivy are following behind her.
âI hate him.â She sits in her chair across from me and folds her arms. âHeâs a dick.â
âWhat did he do?â
âHe tried to throw me into the lake so I broke his nose.â
âOh, shit.â
She canât stay in one place when sheâs pissed off, thatâs one of the first things I learned about her. Ashton almost follows her into the trees again, but Ivy stops her.
âShe will come back.â
Half an hour later, Wren and Zachary are the only ones not back.
âIâm going to find her, c'mon.â I stand up and Luke follows me. We wander through the woods until I hear twigs breaking. I follow the noise and see a silhouette of a person. I use the flashlight on my phone to identify who it is but find Wren and Zachary up against a tree.
âWell we found her,â I tell Luke. Wren jumps away from Zachary and fixes her hair.
âWell, we will be heading back to the block party. Feel free to join us.â Luke carries me back to the fire and I sit on Ivyâs lap.
We have run out of chairs so Luke sits at Ivyâs feet and we talk to Zacharyâs friends. Thereâs four of them, all from England. Austin explained that they had a break between their Seattle and Vancouver shows so they decided to go camping.
âWell, look whoâs back!â Michael claps and we all look at Wren and Zachary walking back into the circle.
âAre you a natural pink?â I ask him. He looks at me for a second before replying.
âNo.â
âI look better in pink.â
âWhy is your nose broken?â Luke asks.
âDoes it bleed naturally?â
âIs it organic?â
âDo you have any pets?â Ivy asks.
âIf so, can I pet them?â
He looks more than confused about the three of us shooting questions at him nonstop but I enjoy it. We stop asking questions when we feel Wrenâs death glare on us.
âAre you as good of a kisser as Lucas here is?â Michael asks, eating another s'more. I just want to know how he keeps toasting more marshmallows and nobody notices. Also, did he bring his own chocolate and graham crackers or is he eating theirs?
âYou kissed?â I raise my eyebrows and glance at Luke, who is trying to hide his face in his knees.
âIâve kissed pretty much everyone here, I am detached from reality.â
âYouâve never kissed me?â I say and he looks me dead in the eye.
âDo you want me to kiss you?â I feel like he purposely smashed the melted chocolate and marshmallow all over his mouth.
âMaybe later.â
âMaybe? Why are you being so vague? Why is there no definite answer ever when it comes to you? What are you so afraid of?â
âI donât want candy all over my face.â
âNo,â he pauses, âno.â
He stands up and starts walking towards me.
âMichael, please.â I canât help but laugh. I try to avoid his face, but I fall back and he leans down and kisses me hard, making sure to get chocolate all over me.
âYouâre so gross, oh my god.â
âDo you want me to lick it off?â
âNo, please donât.â He shrugs and goes back to his seat and I use paper towel and a water bottle to remove to sticky marshmallow and chocolate.
âI think I want to move to LA,â I whisper into the air. The two of us just got back from hanging out with the other guys and everyone else was too tired to even came back to our camp. I was too focused on things to sleep.
âWhat?â Luke whispers back and I turn my head. Luke is the only one who came with me because he was awake and didnât want me to be alone. âReally?â
âYeah.â
He smiles and I mirror his expression.
âWhen?â He sits up a bit and I stare at the stars again.
âWe could go to my apartment on the way back to LA, grab some of my stuff.â
âThat would be so cool. Because we are always in LA, ya know? Like if we arenât home or on tour we are in LA. What if we lived in the same complex as Ivy, like we could just wander around to each otherâs apartments.â I roll over and listen to him ramble. He looks at me and smiles.
âIâll tell Ivy in the morning.â
âGood,â he says, âsleep tight, Sev.â
âGoodnight, Luke.â
Of course, that isnât goodnight because I crawl into his sleeping bag about 10 minutes later. I canât help it, heâs warm and I crave him in a way. I crave the warmth and the physical affection. I love contact and the way he holds me when we sleep. Heâs like May 2nd; soft and sweet. I canât help it.
Maybe the reason I feel so empty is because I lost myself in everything I loved and forgot a little bit of me in them. I lost myself in Mickey and John and Brian and Cam. In the color pink and my blue hair.
I donât feel empty when Iâm around the guys, especially Luke. He fills the empty spaces in a way.
I get along with all of them, and I love them in different ways for different reasons. I can laugh with Michael, talk music with Calum and really talk to Ashton. But with Luke, I can do all this at a deeper level. I feel like I can tell Luke more than I can tell Ashton. I just see him and my day is better. He has a presence and I trust it. Maybe more than I should.
I wake up when I feel like someone has dumped a bucket of water on me. I sit up and crawl out of the sleeping bag. Luke sits up, looking around.
âShit.â I scramble around the tent, grabbing my bag while Luke tries to stand up. He trips over his backpack.
âCome on.â I try not to laugh at him struggling to stand up in the rain. Once heâs on his feet, we are both soaking wet. He follows me to the van and we both crawl in through the passenger side. I sit in the driverâs seat and look at him. Â His hair is sticking to his forehead, his shirt clinging to his torso.
âHow did we not feel it when it started?â I laugh and he shrugs.
âWe probably should have put the rain tarp on it. Or checked the weather app.â
I tuck my knees to my chest and watch the rain fall onto the windshield.
âI love the rain.â
âMe too.â He smiles. Itâs quiet for a moment. We both are freezing and yet the air is hot and sticky.
âAre you okay?â He asks.
âYeah. Iâm fine.â I want to know why heâs asking, do I seem off to him?
âI just- I was thinking about when you kissed me.â
âOh.â
âYeah, I was asking because I know you were upset about-â he stops, thinking about if he should let his name even leave his tongue. âThat guy.â
He knows his name. I know he does, yet he still refers to him as âthat guyâ.
âNiall. You donât have to censor yourself,â I tell him, âbut no. Iâm not upset about him anymore. It just comes in flashes. I miss him in the tiniest moments. Between seconds.â He looks at me for a second.
âDid you-â he stops himself again. âDid you love him?â
âYeah. I did.â
He drops the subject after that. Luckily, Michael left some of his blankets and a pillow in here from the drive up. Thereâs only 2 blankets and neither of them are very warm by themselves, so we sit together on the first bench. We sit too close, trying to get warm. Our teeth are clanking and we both shiver even after getting under the blankets.
âHold on.â I grab my backpack and pull out 2 of my oversized shirts. I sit in the bench behind him, taking off my wet pants and changing into one of the shirts. I hand the other one to Luke and he changes before I return back under the blankets.
âThatâs better.â
I wake up when I hear tapping on the window. It then that I realize Iâm laying on Lukeâs chest. I sit up and see Michael and Wren staring at me. I try to not wake up Luke as I get out of the van.
âYouâre not wearing pants.â
âThey got wet,â I say.
âHow wet?â
âIt rained. We had to seek shelter.â
âYeah, alright.â
âThe ground is wet. It rained.â
âSure, sure.â
Luke gets out of the van behind me and Michael looks him.
âYouâre both naked,â he says, âand thatâs my shirt.â
He points at Lukeâs chest and I glance at the shirt.
âHuh, I guess it is.â I grab my bag from the passenger seat and carry it into the tent with me.
When Iâm done changing, I walk to the fire pit where everyone is eating cinnamon toast and sipping on Capri suns. I sit next to Ivy and Wren, taking a drink of Ivyâs juice.
âHow did you make toast?â I ask. They all point behind me and I frown when I look.
âMichael, did you seriously bring a toaster?â
âI enjoy a crisp start to my day.â
âDid you have fun last night?â Luke asks, changing the subject.
âWren and Zach were fighting the whole time but then they made out against the door of his car, so I think theyâre good.â Ivy throws a piece of bread at Ashton and he laughs.
âDo you have fun? Sleeping together in the van?â
âOne, it was raining. Two, it was raining and we got soaked and it was cold.â
âYeah, alright.â
âTouch the ground, it is damp. It rained. How did all of you miss it?â They shrug and I finish Ivyâs capri sun.
âNo, you fucking did not,â Ivy says when Luke and I clean up breakfast. She grabs my arm and looks at the tattoo. Then at Luke.
âYou assholes went and got matching tattoos.â
âItâs a stick n poke, actually. We did it here.â
âAlright, you assholes gave each other matching tattoos.â
âYou got matching tattoos?â
Michael says standing next to Ivy.
âOh my god, can you calm down.â
âNot when the lovebirds are tattooing themselves in adorable ways?â
âShut up.â Eventually, they stop talking about it and we all decide to go on a hike. We grab water bottles and start walking. Michael makes Ashton carry him, saying this way he will be able to walk back when Ashton is tired and itâs easier for everyone this way. I shrug and let him do his thing. Iâve learned to not question him, nothing will stop this.
We make it to the top of the mountain around noon. Itâs more like a large hill, really, but itâs still tiring. We hung out at the top for a while, catching our breath and taking a break. The walk back is way faster and everyone appreciates that. I do, however, fall and land on a rock, causing my knee to bleed. Everyone freaks out and thinks Iâm going to die, demanding that they carry me the rest of the way. When we get back to our camp, Zachary is sitting at the table on his phone.
âWhat do you want?â Wren asks him. Ashton sets me on the table and we all look at Zachary.
âTo invite you to hang out with us?â
âWe will have to have a squad meeting, wait here.â We all retreat to the now dry tent and I sit on my sleeping bag. Luke sits beside me, asking if Iâm okay and I smile and nod. Neither of us pay attention to what theyâre saying.
âSev? Do you want to come or do you need a doctor?â
âI think I just need Neosporin and a bandaid.â
âAlright, Luke are you down to go?â
âIf I stand up I will die,â He says and I almost snort at how serious heâs gotten all of a sudden. I know heâs just trying to find a reason to stay behind. They leave after a few more minutes of talking and once theyâre gone, I get the keys from Wrenâs backpack.
âYou going to the store?â
âYeah, wanna come?â He nods and stands up. He leaves the tent so I can change and I do the same for him. Once heâs done, we get into the van and I turn on the car.
âYouâre adorable when you drive.â
âShut up.â
Once we are out of the trees, I can drive a normal speed.
âWhat was it like growing up here?â He asks.
âI loved it. Rained all the time, everything is green, the air is clear.â He smiles at me and I run my fingers through my hair.
âTell me about it.â
âI used to live across the street from the elementary school and the middle school. There were 5 elementary schools that dumped into 2 middle schools and one high school. Me and my two friends used to buy these like big glitter balls and named them and carried them around everywhere. When one popped, we hosted a funeral at recess.â
âWhat was yours named?â
âI had 4. The light blue one was Bubbles, the gold one was Goldie, the dark blue was Midnight and the purple one was Minnie.â
âYou were such a wild child.â
âThey sold them at Target. The closest Target was like 20 minutes from my house.â He smiles and I begin talking about the park down the street and the dairy down the hill from the park.
âI kinda wanna see this now.â He laughs and I look at him.
âWant to? Itâs only like 15 minutes from here.â
âOh god, yes.â He smiles and turns up the radio. We sing along, the windows down and the cold air blowing in our faces. When we pass the bridge that leads up to town, I roll up the windows.
âThereâs cows.â I laugh and he just looks at me. The road leading into town is skinny and a one car each way kinda thing. The road is risen 10 feet above where the cows graze the grass and to this day, I think itâs funny that thereâs just a farm right off downtown.
I drive down main street and Luke keeps his eyes glued to his window.
âThatâs the Local Scoop, the diner.â I stop at the sign and point out his window to the building across the street and to the right. I take a left and drive up the hill to where I used to live. When the road levels out, itâs all houses.
âDown that street is one of the elementary schools and the library.â He nods and I keep driving. I point out my window to the park and as we get closer to my old house, my heart starts racing and my throat tightens. When my parents moved out, they didnât tell me who bought the house so I have no idea of it will even still be there. We pass the church and I stop right after it. A large patch of grass, on Lukeâs side and my childhood home out my window.
âThatâs the triangle.â I point out his window at the grass and he smiles.
âWhereâs your house?â I open my door, not saying anything, and he follows my actions. The two apple trees at the end of the front lawn are in full bloom and as I walk towards the gravel driveway, my throat tightens. I havenât been here in years.
âThis is it.â
He looks at me, then the brick house. The pink roses I planted are blooming and the tree on the side of the house that drops sharp leaves, I still donât even know what kind of tree it is, is as tall as ever and I smile. I feel like I might cry so I take a breath.
âThis is where you grew up.â He smiles at me and wraps his arms around my neck. I hug him as tight as I can and he rubs my back.
âAre you okay?â A little girl yells from the front door and I look at her.
âYes! Iâm okay.â She begins to runs towards us and I take a step away from Luke.
âI love you,â she says when she  stops in front of me and both Luke and I laugh.
âYou love me?â
âYou sing pretty.â I smile and crouch down in front of her.
âThank you.â She she holds her arms open and I smile and hug her.
âAmanda! What do you think you are doing?â A short lady with short brown hair comes out from the house and walks over to us at the end of the driveway.
âShe was crying.â The little girl explains and her mom looks up at me.
âYouâre that singer?â I nod and she looks at Luke. âYou her boyfriend?â
âYeah.â
âYou were crying?â
âThis is my old house.â
She looks around then smiles. If I wasnât leaning into Luke, I would have fallen over when she invites us inside. We enter through the front room, passing through the laundry room and into the kitchen.
âWhat are you doing here?â She asks, pulling out Tupperware with brown powder in it.
âWe are camping with some friends up in Mount Vernon and I wanted to show him where I grew up.â
She smiles at me and starts pooling some water on the stove. Thereâs 4 entrances to the kitchen. From the laundry room behind us, to the right is the hallway with 2 bedrooms and a bathroom and the left is the dining room. In between the dining room and the hallway is a door that leads up to the attic where my brotherâs room used to be.
âThat used to be my room.â I point down the hall and to the open door. Luke smiles, leaning down to planting a kiss on my cheek.
âYou can wander, do you want some cocoa? Iâll holler when itâs done.â
We thank her and I stroll into my old room. Itâs now floor to ceiling book shelves. Itâs a library now. I look out the window and into the front yard, smiling.
âI had a bunk bed.â I laugh, tears filling my eyes. Luke wraps his arms around me and rests his chin on top of my head.
I show him the living room, the pellet shove that I used to always mess with, then the basement. This was the storage room and off of it was my sisterâs bedroom. Now itâs a TV room.
âItâs weird to see all of the shelves replaced with a TV and a couch.â
âThis is a pretty house.â
âYeah.â
We walk back upstairs and I show him the back yard. The porch expends over half of the back of the house and the grass curves down into where my momâs garden was. A lilac tree stands in the back right corner of the yard and the property falls down a hill where the majority of the trees grow.
âThe neighbor boys used to play with us in there. We built tree houses and convinced ourselves we would run away and live in there.â
Once the tour is over, we walk back into the kitchen where the mom is cutting up fruit.
âThank you for letting us look around.â
âNo problem! Here.â She hands us both mugs and we stand around talking to the mom while we sip on hot chocolate.
âHow long did your family live here?â
âMy grandpa built it, so they lived in it for a while and my mom and dad lived in the basement when they first got married. They moved away for a year and moved back when I was born, we stayed here until I was 15.â
âWe just moved in last year.â I nod and smile at her. When the sun is beginning to go down, I tell Luke we should probably go back. He agrees and we say bye to the little girl and the mom.
âCome back whenever, sweetie.â She hugs me and I nod. When we are back in the van, I drive down the street and to the middle school where I can turn around. I drive down the hill and right before we hit downtown, I take a right.
âThe store is this way,â I explain, âwe should probably get band aids so they donât question us.â
I park in front of the Food Pavilion and turn off the car.
âWe used to call his the kid kart store.â
âWhy?â I, again, do not answer him. But he follows me inside.
âI understand that now, yes.â He says, looking at the tiny carts inside the front door. I laugh and try to find the band aids. I grab 3 candies and a strawberry banana Naked before I find what Iâm looking for. I also buy Luke a bag of m&ms and a Dr Pepper, through his obvious refusal.
âI love you.â He stands behind me, loosely wrapping his arms around my neck, leaning down and kissing my cheek again.
âI know.â I hand the cashier $20 and she grabs my change. I take my bag and the the money then turn around, Lukeâs arms still around my neck.
âWe have to go. Please let go of me.â He smiles, dropping his arms by his sides. I hold onto his arm while we walk back to the car. The sun has gone down and itâs beginning to rain again, the air is thick and sticks in my throat but I donât mind it. âNow where to?â
âProbably back to camp, thereâs not many places to go.â
âI donât want to go back yet.â
âThen letâs just stay here for a while.â He smiles and I hand him his candy. I read open my starburst and he pops some m&mâs into his mouth.
âSpace scares me,â I tell him, staring at the moon.
âWhat?â He turns his head and laughs.
âI donât like the unknown, I donât like taking chances. I like knowing the result.â
âI think the unknown is cool. It can be anything you want it to be, really.â
âThatâs not accurate. You canât control how people react, they might stand in your way of getting what youâve set out for.â I eat a pink starburst, watching the rain fall onto the windshield.
âBut sometimes they donât.â
I eat a few more starbursts, handing the ones I donât like to Luke for him to eat.
10 minutes later, I start the car again and drive out of the empty parking lot.
âWhere are we going?â
âI want to show you something.â I take the road that takes us behind the store, down the hill and to the park by the river. I turn off the car and look at Luke.
âCome on.â I get out of the car, stepping out of the van. by the time I sit on the picnic table under the cover that shields us from the rain, Iâm soaked. Luke sits beside me without a word, and I look at him.
âThis was the park where the town always gathered for holidays. There were duck races and all that shit.â I smile and Luke laughs. âThis is where I played my first concert.â
âReally?â
âYeah, for the Fourth of July when I was 15, right before we moved away.â
âWhy did you move?â
âMy mom hates it here.â
We donât talk for a while. We just watch the rain fall onto the swings and the slide. The cold water sticking to my hair and my clothes is finally getting to me, making me shiver.
âCold?â
âObviously.â
He rolls his eyes and takes off his jacket, then his hoodie. Heâs left in his flannel when he holds his dry hoodie out for me to put on.
âThanks.â I donât know why it occurred to him but not me that it might rain, Iâve lived here for a complete 18 years of my life.
âYouâre welcome.â
We get back to camp just before everyone else. It somehow didnât rain here, but we still put on the rain cover over the tent. We had just gotten changed and settled into our sleeping bags when I hear Wren and Michael laughing.
The next day is our last, so we decide this will be our 100% disconnected day. We have the last of our Capri suns and marshmallows for breakfast then I clean up while everyone gets changed. When Iâm done, I join Ivy and Wren in the tent to change.
The guys act completely suspicious the whole morning, and it finally makes sense when they pick us up, run to the cliff and jump in. I screamed bloody murder but I had enough time to hold my breath before we hit the water.
âFucker.â I splash Michael when we break the surface and he laughs.
We splash around for a while, Luke and Michael swimming around touching our feet and legs in an attempt to try and scare us. They give up on that when Wren kicks Michael in face.
âCalum, why does it feel like you havenât been here this whole time?â Michael asks. We sit scattered across the 3 boulders in the middle of the lake, staring at the trees and mountains surrounding us.
âAre you even real?â Ivy questions him.
âWho even are you?â Wren fills her voice with fake disgust and I canât help but laugh. Calum frowns and throws himself into the water before crawling back up to us.
Itâs kind of funny. The 7 of us sitting in the middle of a lake, soaking wet and fully clothed. If my mom showed me a picture of us like this when I was 8, I would have pinned us all has bad kids. The kids that have no morals. That got into drugs and rebel against their parents every wish.
I would stare at the scene and ask, how could girls and boys be coexisting and theyâre not fucking around? Thatâs impossible.
I would look at Michael, Ivy and myself with a frown. Making your hair any color thatâs not your natural color isnât a nice thing to do to your mom.
Our arms would definitely catch my eye.
Tattoos are for the bad kids.
Bad words will send you to hell.
Their shorts are really short.
Kissing boys is gross.
Who gives a fuck?
âI fucking love you guys.â
They all aw adorably and I roll my eyes.
âIâm serious. Not just an 'aw youâre my friends, I love youâ. But honestly. Youâre my best friends. I love you more than anything.â
âI agree. I want to live my life and I want to do it with you guys,â Ashton says, resting his elbows on his knees. âYou make life a little bit better.â
âI remember when the squad first became friends again. You, Sev, were my best friend all through in elementary and middle school and when you moved away after Freshman year it fucking ripped a part of me away, ya know? And when you showed up at my door when I was 19 and barely surviving it was fucking blessing because your hair was white and it was like oh shit Iâm dead. If it wasnât for you I wouldnât be as successful because I needed your support when I came home from a casting I totally bombed. And when Wren came into our little clique everything came together. We were completed. We all followed our dreams and we all made something of ourselves and we did it.â Ivy says, glancing between me and the trees behind me. I move over to her, resting my head on her shoulder.
âAnd you annoying Australians just added to our little family and I am so grateful I get to spend time with you guys. I really hope it will calm down and I wonât see you very much but I do love you guys.â
We all share our little sappy stories and by the end almost all of us are in tears. This moment just kind of came alive and we all shared a little more of ourselves than anyone else in the group has seen. We admitted things we ourselves werenât sure of and everything is raw and unfiltered. Itâs true.
Michael ends the sappy moment by jumping back into the water and we all follow his lead. We swim around for a little while longer, and when we decide to go back up, I cling to Lukeâs back while he swims to shore. One by one, we lazily climb out of the water and up the rocks to our campsite.
Ashton starts a fire while we strip ourselves of our wet clothes, hanging them in a tree. Once we are all in dry pajamas, we huddle around the fire and try and regain our warmth.
âI want to move to LA.â I break the silence and everyone looks at me.
âReally?â Ivy smiles. I nod and she goes off on a rant about how we can pick up my needs on the way back tomorrow and hire some movers to get the rest and then we can get me a lease for an apartment by her.
The entire hour long drive to my apartment in Seattle, Luke and Michael are singing throwback R&B songs.
When I park on the street in front of my building, everyone gets out before I can even turn off the engine.
âYou live here?â
âMost of the time.â
They follow me into the lobby and watch me get my mail. I have a few bills and someone gave out my address so thereâs a few letters from fans. A yellow piece of paper sitting at the bottom of the mailbox tells me I have a package in the office and I ask the building manager for it. He leaves for a moment then returns with a medium sized pink box. Itâs decorated with white ribbon and thereâs several happy birthday stickers on every side of it. It must have been sent a little after my birthday or from some far away place so it arrived while Iâve been gone. I thank him and stand next to Wren by the elevator. Michael tries to pick the lock on my mailbox while we wait for the doors to open.
In my apartment, Wren and Ivy help me gather the stuff we are going to take with us. The guys hang out in the kitchen digging for food. While they get themselves well fed and I have my 3 bags of clothes ready to go, I sit at the table between Ashton and Wren.
I cut open the box and look inside. A piece of paper with almost a yellow hue to it sits on top. My friends are lost in their conversations so they donât even notice me take the paper and read it.
Darling,
The phases of the moon fill the abyss of the land above our heads and you have to have faith that what you learn in science class is honest when the idea that space is real; time is real; this is real.
Sincerely Yours,
Niall
My whole body becomes cold. It starts in my back and spreads like a plague. I set the letter face down on the table and reach into the box again. I pull out a cd case and a stuffed pineapple. The cd case has a picture of me on the cover. My hair is newly blue and Iâm sitting on the ground looking somewhere off to the right. I recognize the picture to be from the night of my Phoenix show. After my set and when I was meeting fans.
Is he trying to send some kind of fucked up message with this?
I glance into the box, seeing all the little knickknacks scattered across the box. On the very bottom is a shirt. I pull it out, holding it out so I can see what it says. White on black, They Will Write Stories About The Lives That We Lived. The words are bold and cover the whole front of the shirt.
âWhatâs that?â
âA birthday present,â I whisper, staring at the shirt. I throw it back in the box and leave it on the table saying we should leave if we want to get back at a decent time. I donât realize someone brought the box until we are at a rest stop and I get into the back to change my clothes and see it under my backpack.
The drive after that goes by in sort of a blur. We were all coming down from our relaxed high and everyone is tired and sad that our getaway is coming to an end. I try to distract myself from the box but I can feel it taunting me. I feel spiders in my spine whenever it crawls into my memory and I think about something else.
I think about how much Iâll miss this. We all have to go back to our lives and maybe one day we will find time in our busy schedules when everyone is free for another hangout. That wonât be anytime soon though and we all know it.
The guys go to stay at their friend Brianâs house. Back at Ivyâs apartment, we drag our feet up the stairs and through the front door. The drive sucked all energy out of us, but we arenât tired. So we build a home on her couch. Ivy says that we all have to wear sweaters and pajama shorts so I wear a grey sweatshirt and a pair of my old gymnastic shorts. Wren draws the blinds and we turn on a movie. I rest my head on Wrenâs lap and try to pay attention to the movie. My head and throat hurt and Iâve been fighting off a cough. Iâm assuming itâs from my wandering in the rain with Luke. I always get super emotional when Iâm sick.
âI hate boys,â I sigh, halfway through Clueless.
âWhy?â
âThey stress me out.â
âWhat happened?â
âI appreciate Luke always being there and I love him to death but being with him feels wrong in a part of me. Itâs stupid but I feel like Iâm betraying Niall, in a way.â
âDonât be stressed. People donât stick around for no reason,â she says, tucking my hair behind my ear. âIf theyâre with you, you gotta trust them when they say they love you. The opposite is also true, too,â her fingers brush over my cheekbone and I almost shiver at how cold she is. âIf they leave, you gotta trust that they donât.â
Boys are stupid.
At 7 the next morning, thereâs a knock on the door. I get up, stumbling across the room to the black door.
"Hi!â I slam the door shut. âThatâs not a very nice thing to do.â
I roll my eyes at Michaelâs whining from the other side.
âFuck off.â I walk away, falling back into the couch and cuddling into Wrenâs leg.
For 2 and a half weeks, we somehow ignore every call and text from the guys and every knock on the door. We pretend that we donât have obligations or jobs for a little while. Our little hide away ends when Ivy gets called in to film and Wren makes a low key appearance at an art show downtown. I, however, have yet to be spotted. I have kept to myself mostly, I just needed time to think about things by staying alone in my new apartment 2 doors down from Ivy.
At 10 o'clock, when the sun is down and Iâm still alone but itching for company, I slip on my shoes and walk down to what I have been told is his apartment. Third door on the first floor of the building to the right.
After a few knocks, I think that I have the wrong door. Or he just isnât home. But just as I am turning to walk away, the door opens. Luke stands in the doorway shirtless and running his hands through his hair.
I almost canât ask him. Iâm not really even sure what to say. I havenât seen or talked to him in weeks.
âWill you come with me?â
âYeah, hold on.â He disappears into the darkness of his apartment and appears a second later wearing a shirt and flip flops.
He follows me on the parking lot and to my car. One of the movers drove it down for me, which Iâm thankful for.
I get in the driverâs seat and Luke watches me as I turn on over the engine and back out of my covered parking spot.
He doesnât ask where we are going. Not until I get on the freeway.
âIâm sick of being alone in my apartment.â
Itâs not really an answer, but he accepts it as one. I keep switching which hand is on the steering wheel, so I can run my hand through my hair. The road is clear of cars. Somehow we are the only ones who thought about driving on the 405. Even just having him in my passenger seat is making my throat loosen up. These last 3 weeks have felt like a getaway that got tired and lonely.
âThank you.â
âFor what?â He turns his whole body to look at me, lending against the door behind him.
âExisting.â
We stay silent for a little longer. I take the next exit I see and pull off into a gas station. The lights are the only thing to be seen for miles and I know that we are in the middle of nowhere now. I park in front of the convenience store and stare at my hands at 10 and 2 on the steering wheel. He just looks at me.
âIâve been thinking a lot,â I start.
âThat doesnât sound good.â
I look at him. Heâs frowning and I almost feel bad for making him think itâs something terrible. That I drove him out in the middle of butt-fuck Egypt to drop a bomb on him.
âItâs not bad.â
âOkay. Good.â
We donât talk. Staring at each other with words we want to let out in the tip of our tongues but we donât know what they really are so we donât trust ourselves to open our mouths. We donât talk, but then we do. At the same time we try to let on the words out but they get lost in each other.
âOh, you go first,â I tell him.
âIâm in love with you.â
âFuck.â I face my body to the steering wheel again and open my door.
âIâm sorry,â he says, watching me get out of the car. I walk around the front of the car, glancing at him through the windshield. He looks like a deer in headlights, his eyes watching my every move and his head moving with me. I open his door and he frowns.
âIâm sorry, please donât make me walk home. I donât know where we are. I am a poor Australian boy I donât know this country.â I blink at him, keeping my hands above my head, holding onto the roof. I donât realise Iâm smiling until he finally shuts up.
âWhy are you smiling? This isnât the time for you to be smiling. This is my life on the line, Sev.â
âYouâre such a fucking idiot.â
âWell thatâs not very nice.â
I drop my hands to my sides and laugh at him, leaning into the car. I lose my balance when I realize the bottom of the doorframe is shorter than my knees and I fall into Luke, kissing him harder than intended. He doesnât mind, he doesnât push me away with broken teeth. Rather, he smiles and I feel his hand on my cheek.
âWe should probably go back,â he whispers, pulling away only slightly. I nod and shut his door and walk back to the driverâs side and getting in. He turns on the radio and keeps it a quiet buzz. Itâs just a background noise.
I pull into my parking space and get out without a sound. Luke follows me to the foot of the stairs that lead up to my apartment on the second floor, keeping his eyes on me and I try to avoid looking but I give in and glance at him.
âGoodnight.â
âGoodnight, Luke.â
âIâll see you tomorrow.â
âSee you tomorrow.â
I think itâs over now. We will part ways and I will have to find a way to get myself to stop fucking smiling as soon as I shut my front door. But when I try to turn and walk away, he grabs my hand and pulls me into him. He rests his chin on top of my head and I hold on to him tight.
âCome back with me.â
I walk with him to his door which he pushes open and quickly pulls me inside. His apartment is meant for one person. One room which is the kitchen and the living room, two doors to the left leading to the bathroom and his bedroom.
âYou know you shouldnât leave it unlocked like that. Someone could come in and steal all your stuff or ya know, kill you.â
He leans against his dresser, nodding slowly for a minute, not even paying attention to a thing I said. I roll my eyes but he slides over to me, leaning down and kissing me quickly.
I take a step back and trip over a pair of his jeans and fall back onto his bed. Our kisses start short, innocent and very repetitive. He moves his hands from my face down my sides and pulls at the bottom of my shirt. I arch my back into him and he kisses me harder, my teeth feel like theyâre going to rip through my skin and the feel of his scruff against my palm makes me smile and I try to pull him even closer. He bites my lip and I feel almost light headed but a loud meow in my ear when Luke kisses my neck knocks me out of my daze. I scream and accidentally knee him in the crotch, making him fall off the bed and into the floor groaning.
âWhat the fuck is that?â I sit up in my knees, looking at the kitten that is on the bed behind me.
âA kitten.â He acts like I pushed him off a boat, holding onto the side of the bed like heâs drowning and trying to keep this head above water.
âI know itâs a fucking kitten, Luke. Where did it come from?â
âHis name is Oswald.â He stands up, sitting behind me. He picks up the kitten and rubs the top of its head.
âWhere did Oswald come from?â
âI got him a few days ago. I was lonely.â
âOh my god.â I kiss him again and he carefully sets Oswald on the bed a safe distance away from us before he tangles his hands in my hair and pushes me onto my back. His lips are warm but his piercing is cold against my collarbone and the pressure of him on top of me is a weird sense of pleasure and I begin to giggle. Luke stops, looking up at me and my giggle turns into a horrible laugh and he kisses my nose, laughing with me.
He lies down next to me and we stare at the ceiling, our laughter dissipating.
The next morning, I wake up to Luke laying on top of me.
âGet off of me.â My voice is muffled under his back and I feel his laugh on my nose.
âYouâre so comfortable.â
âShut up and get off.â
He eventually rolls off me and I pull his whole duvet over me in an attempt to go back to sleep.
âSeeeevv.â Luke pulls the blankets off me and grins.
âI donât like you.â I try to roll away from his smile but I was too close to the edge and land on the floor.
âHa! Loser.â
I stand up at the end of the bed and stare at him with my hands on my hip. He sits up on his elbows and stares at me with a smile.
âDid I make fun of you when you got your dick bruised and fell on the floor? No. Because thatâs rude. You donât make fun of someone who is hurt, you just donât.â He stands up, looking down at me and cupping my cheeks.
âAlright. Iâm sorry.â He kisses my nose 3 times before my lips.
âYeah, whatever.â
A knock comes to the door and I meander into the kitchen to find something to eat. I hear Michael as soon as the door opens.
âHey, baby! Howâs my favorite little girl.â For a second I think heâs talking to me but when I turn around heâs cuddling the cat.
âOswald is a boy,â I correct him.
âOkay but what if Oswald wants to be a girl? Why does Harold have to conform to gender roles just because Luke is an idiot and named his cat Frank.â
I change the subject by saying good morning and he sits on the couch continuing to pet Oswald.
âSo why are you here at 8am? Donât you normally wake up in like 3 hours?â Michael asks.
âLuke invited me over to make him food.â I shrug, sitting in the counter. Michael glances at me then carries on with the cat.
I leave after I make breakfast, insisting to Luke and Michael that I need to go do something and Iâll grab some food while Iâm out.
The next time Wren and Ivy are at my apartment, I donât tell them. I think about it. I want to tell them, but I canât get the words out. Every time I look at one of them I can feel myself wanting to say it but when I open my mouth I chicken out and canât do it.
Luke doesnât bring it up to anyone either. Or maybe he did and they decided to not say anything, because I would expect at least Michael to tease Luke about it when we are all together, but he doesnât say a word.
When Wren and Ivy come over to help me shop for furniture to put in my new apartment, the guys come knocking on the door asking if we will hang out with them.
âWe are going to IKEA, youâre welcome to come.â
It was more of a hollow offer, I hoped they wouldnât accept but Iâm not mad when they do. They pile into my car and Wren goes with Ivy in her car.
âYou should sit in the back,â Ashton says.
âItâs my car.â
âBut youâre the smallest.â
âItâs my fucking car.â I make Ashton sit in the back because of his comment and Michael sits in up in the passenger seat with me.
I park next to Ivy and we all walk in together. I fall behind, next to Luke.
âI feel like you like Michael more than you like me.â
âAt least you know.â
I walk faster, catching up with the girls and he falls back to the guys. We take the escalators up to the top floor and I walk with Ivy and Wren around through the decorated rooms. At some point the guys wander off somewhere and we leave it to them to find us.
âSo whatâs up?â Ivy asks, holding onto my arm. She frowns when I shrug. She reacts by telling me I need to access my feelings more.
âItâs just that thing where Iâm sad and tired but Iâm not really sure why Iâm sad.â
âOh, Sev.â They both hug me while we walk.
âReally?!â We turn around and Michael crawls out of the tent set up for kids to play in. âYouâve walked past us like 3 times! And we are in easy places!â
âWhat are you doing?â
âWhat? Dude,â Michael looks at Luke âMaybe itâs just an Australian thing.â
âYou would think hide n seek would be a universal thing but I guess not.â
âOkay girls, we are going to teach you how to play this game we play in Australia.â
We donât say anything while Michael and Luke explain what hide n seek is and all the rules.
âLetâs practice, okay? So Iâll sit under this table and all you need to do is look at me and say found you, alright? Good? Was that too fast?â
âI got it.â He sits under the table and I take a step back, looking down at him. âFound you.â
âGood! Now letâs try this out. You go hide and we will try and find you.â We nod enthusiastically and walk to the bedroom displays. I sit on the bed, reading emails while Wren and Ivy check out the bathroom.
âSeventeen!â Michael stands with his hands on his hips and Luke stands behind him, staring at me.
âI didnât know where to hide. I donât understand this game.â I continue reading the email, my voice uninterested.
âDear god, what would you do without me?â He holds my arm, making me stand up and pulling me across the room.
âI donât know Michael, I would probably die.â
âWell you wouldnât die but youâd make an ass out of yourself in Australia.â He opens the door to a wardrobe and motions for me to climb in, shutting the door behind me. After 5 rounds of hide n seek, I pick a couch and a bed as well as several lamps and decorations for my apartment. I pay for everything downstairs and I have Ashton go get my car and back it up over here so we can get everything in the back of it.
âDid you tell them?â Luke stands next to me, holding a chocolate bar.
âWho?â
âIvy and Wren. Did you tell them about us?â
âOh, no. Was I supposed to?â
âI mean you can, but I didnât tell anyone.â
âOkay.â
I make the guys carry the heavy stuff and load it into the back of my car. Itâs lucky that we brought 2 cars because we had to load some of the lamps in Ivyâs back seat.
We get back to my apartment in 30 minutes, 10 extra minutes because the Australians thought they were hungry. I make them set up my furniture for payment for driving them and buying them food. Wren and I go to Ivyâs apartment to hang out at while they do that It takes them 4 hours and that whole time, we are just watching movies and eating some soup Wren made. The guys come by after we finish the soup and tell us theyâre going to go home now thatâs itâs all done. I thank them several times, hugging them each time. I like hugging Luke the most, maybe because he smells the best or because of the way he holds me and rests his chin on the top of my head.
Once we shut the door and are back on the couch watching Ouran Host Club when Wren says we should take a vacation. Another girls week and donât let the Australians tag along. So Ivy arranges it.
We plan to go to New York, we have always had a good time in New York so we thought it would be a nice time. We caught a flight up to Seattle for Wren to get some of her other clothes. We are in Washington for only about 3 hours, 2 of them being spent getting checked in and through security for our next flight.
I sit in the with my head on Wrens lap while she texts Zachary and I can feel my spine coming out of its place and cramping up. Ivy sits on the other side of Wren, speaking fast into her phone, Iâm assuming sheâs talking to one of her managers.
Once in awhile one of us will get up and buy a drink or cookies from Paradise Bakery but for the most part we stay sitting quiet with our eyes our phones until itâs time to board. I can see the rain through the windows surrounding us but hearing it hit the roof when we are boarding gives me a sense of bliss.
We are one of the first few people on the airplane so I sit on the window seat, Wren in the middle and Ivy in the end. Itâs 2 hours and 20 minutes to Vegas and then we have 20 minutes to hurry to gate 10 and get on the next plane to JFK.
I put on my buckle as soon as I sit down. Not because Iâm afraid Iâm going to die or anything like that, but itâs more just a habit. The stewardess goes through all the proper procedures in the intercom while another stands in the middle of the aisle and demonstrates everything she says. She knows what sheâs going to say before she says it, they have both done this long enough to know the script.
I donât take off my buckle when the light turns off, not planning on getting up at anytime since I have sworn off airplane bathrooms. I keep one earbud in the whole flight, talking to Ivy and Wren about artistic choices and who we would prefer to have rule our country next.
âIf he was eligible to run, of course I would vote Drake.â
âYes, but what about Ellen?â
âOkay but this about this; Adam Levine.â
âOkay, thatâs real.â
I take too many pictures of the clouds as we pass through them and when I start to feel tired, I rest my head on Wrenâs shoulder.
I wake up when the captain announces that we are 150 miles out and he is going to begin our descent. We will be landing in about 35 minutes. The three of us huddle around Wrenâs phone while she calculates how fast we are going and how long it would take to get to Amsterdam at this speed. I donât know why or how she knows how far Amsterdam is from LA, but we donât question it.
I always expect to be more afraid of the turbulence than I am. I have a horrible fear of highs but when the plane shakes and I feel my stomach burn empty, I donât bite my lip and close my eyes. I find myself looking out my window and smiling at the ground. When the pilot turns the plane almost on its side, I laugh at the new view of the desert below us.
We touch down and I can feel how fast we are going now. I watch the flaps on the wings turn up as the plane comes to a stop and we pull up to gate 1.
Everyone stands up and begins to grab their things out of the overhead bins but even when everyone is prepared to get off, we are still waiting.
âExcuse the wait, we are just waiting for someone to come open the door.â The pilot repeats the same phrase over and over 4 times in the 17 minutes we are waiting.
âIf we donât get off right now we are not going to make the transfer.â
âThey will wait for us. We arenât the only ones who need to get on there.â
2 minutes later, the door is opened and everyone is ready to make it out of this cramped space. The three of us run as fast as we can but when Ivy says she can see the gate, we stop. The doors are closed and nobody is boarding. We walk the rest of the way, Ivy offering to get in line at the kiosk to figure out what happened. Wren and I sit in the seats about 200 feet away and plug our phones into the outlets at the bottom of the chairs. I pull my custom water bottle Luke gave me for my birthday itâs a clear pink with a thick black 17 printed on the side and a black lid. I filled it with propel before we left and I forgot about it so when I take a drink, expecting plain water and getting strawberry kiwi, I almost choke. Wren snorts, not even able to form words from how hard sheâs laughing. I flip her off and set the bottle on the floor. I scroll through Twitter until Ivy stands in front of us saying she doesnât want to wait anymore.
âAll passengers flying to JFK or DCA, please report to check in. We will try and get you on a flight tomorrow, our apologies.â
âWhat the fuck is that suppose to mean?â
We all frown and Ivy shrugs, taking a left in the direction of check in. Thereâs a hoard of people and, judging by their lack of bags, I know they are here to rebook a flight. We get in line and after 10 minutes of standing, we get to a kiosk.
âIt seems like our next flight with 3 open seats is either Tuesday or Wednesday.â
âThatâs a fucking week away.â
âI know. Iâm sorry.â
âI only have a week off work.â
âIâm sorry.â
âWhat the fuck happened?â
âUm, theyâre calling it Flypocolypse.â
âAre you shitting me? What happened?â
âA tower went down in D.C. And it closed all airports in the Northeast.â
âThis is fucking amazing,â Ivy laughs. âFine. Book us for Tuesday. Iâll call a hotel.â
She walks off shaking her head and I frown. Once itâs all booked, Wren and I walk over to Ivy who is standing off by a window. Sheâs rubbing her temple and I know sheâs freaking out. This trip was suppose to be relaxing.
âWe need to get our bags, come on.â
We walk until we find a sign pointing to baggage claim. Thereâs 3 huge piles of luggage and we scavenger for our bags. I almost have a heart attack when my bag and guitar arenât in any of the piles.
âI had $400 worth of shoes in that bag. Do you know how long it took for me to buy that? And my camera. Oh no.â
A lady walks past with a cart full of bags and I almost cry when I see my red back with the broken wheel, my guitar in its case on top.
âWait!â She stops walking and looks at me. âThatâs my stuff, sorry.â
She smiles and says itâs alright, helping me get my stuff off the cart.
We find the pickup lanes and signal a cab to pick us up. A guy in an orange vest helps us get all our bags in the trunk and I hand him a $5 bill.
âCould I have a quick picture?â
âYeah!â
He asks us to cling to him, act like we are fawning over him. Once the picture is taken, we hug him then we get in the cab.
Vegas is basically a new world. Itâs all neon lights and bad decisions. You can be whoever you would like as soon as you enter the city limits. Maybe youâre being someone you didnât know you could be or just a truer version of yourself. The lights have that effect on you. It soaks into your skin and finds itself in your veins. Thereâs no escaping it once youâre in.
This isnât the week long vacation that we expected, but we can make it work. Ivy booked a room on the 10th floor of a hotel off the strip, I didnât catch the name. Entering the room, I see that the entire wall is a window.
âThis place is intense.â
âBut itâs perfect,â Wren says falling onto the bed. I agree. Itâs perfect. Itâs just us.
When I am looking through my bag for clothes, I realise it.
âI fucking left my water bottle at the airport.â
âLuke might kill you.â Wren starts to laugh but she stops herself, looking up at me. âNo, he wonât. Heâs too sweet.â
As the sun is setting, we think it would be a great photo to be completely topless in front of the huge window. Maybe itâs the city or maybe itâs just us being stupid.
Making another stupid decision, we get ready to get fucked up at a club down the strip. Itâs about a mile and a half but we take a cab, not wanting to walk that far in our little black dresses and heels.
Wren ordered a round of shots and they both tell me to take the first one. The two of them watch me intently as I throw my head back and let the bitter taste explode over my tongue. I lose count of how many more shots I take but I doubt itâs over 6. Iâm not quite drunk, Iâm completely coherent, but I can feel my blood running its course through my body. I canât stop smiling and laughing. I am so fucking happy and free. For once, Iâm not thinking about Niall, and Iâm not thinking about Luke. This is the vacation we wanted.
Itâs been such a long time, but I had an addictive personality and I went into shock when Niall dropped me cold turkey. He left a scar. Almost everything tastes like him and I hear his name hundreds of times a day, just walking down the street.
The three of us are dancing in the middle of the room when I feel like might actually pee myself if I donât find a bathroom soon.
I round the corner and immediately stop in my tracks. His eyes light up and he starts walking towards me. I quickly turn around but he grabs my arm. I yank it away just as he appears in front of me. The burning in my veins isnât from the alcohol anymore.
âWhat do you want?â
âWhy is kale taste better cooked?â
âGet the fuck off me,â I spit. As if my words were more than that, words, he takes a step back as if they punched him in the face. He lets go of me and I push my way through the drunk and sweaty bodies until Iâm sure he has lost sight of me. I stumble into the bathroom and wash my hands, wiping my cheeks with my arms in the process.
I donât tell Ivy or Wren Iâm leaving. I sneak out the back door and begin to walk to the hotel alone. My head is pounding and I can barely walk straight. I only had a a few shots but I think seeing john out me over the edge in some way. Iâm buzzed and probably dehydrated while having a breakdown over a boy. My throat is dry and the hot, sticky summer air is making my thighs chafe. I can feel my heels creating a blister on my heel so I lean against a wall and take off before I continue walking. Iâm glad that in the hundreds of people I pass, nobody recognises me. I donât think I would be able to stop walking anyway. Thereâs a certain feeling pulling me to walk down the street. Or away from the club. Away from Niall.
Once Iâm back in the room, I get in the shower.
I let the water burn my skin, not letting it touch my hair. I stare at the stone wall of the shower and run my fingertips over the sharp edges of the rocks. You would think they would polish them, make them soft and beautiful. But they kept them raw and hard. One wrong move and the blood thatâs been on your tongue for too long to even realise it anymore might be flowing down the drain.
I canât get to sleep. Even at 4am when Iâm still alone in the room and I have been leaning against the headboard for 3 hours.
I slip on my shoes, not even bothering with socks, and walk down to the lobby. Thereâs a bunch of little shops off the main entrance, a coffee shop being one of them. The boy working is too energetic for it to be 4am, but when I squint at the clock in the corner, it confirms the time. I order a coffee with a shot of cream, talking to him while he makes it.
âSo what brings you to Vegas?â He smiles, pouring milk in the cup.
âA week long layover.â
âWow. Thatâs intense.â
I leave him a $10 tip and head back to my room, sipping on my coffee. Luckily, he made it what everyone calls kidâs temperature because I donât think burning my tongue would be a good experience right now.
Once Iâm back leaning against the headboard, I stare at the TV on the wall. I set down my cup on the table beside me and grab my notebook, scribbling down the words in my head.
I promised myself I wouldnât let you complete me.
The next morning, Ivy and Wren grill me for ditching them and I just shrug and say I wasnât feeling well so the bouncer called me a cab. They leave it alone after that.
After hanging out in our room for a few hours, Ivy insists that we need to go shopping. I donât reject. We walk to where all the stores are and decide Topshop is a good first stop. We pick out outfits to try on and model for each other in. Ivy goes first, then Wren, and finally, itâs me. I change into a dark blue high waisted jeans and an orange striped halter top. Iâm looking for realistic outfits rather than extravagant runway. I walk out of the fitting room dramatically and horribly walk down the fake catwalk for them. They laugh and clap and cheer for me to work it.
Their laughter comes to an end and I turn around. I follow their gazes to the store entrance behind me. Harry and Liam are standing just outside the store, looking at me.
âFuck, do you think heâs with them?â I ask trying to retreat back to the fitting room. I need to avoid him, even thinking about him behind in the same building as me is making me nauseous. I lock myself in the fitting room but since Iâm only in the first room, I can hear everything.
âHey! Whereâs Seventeen?â I hear Harry ask.
âShe isnât here,â Ivy says, nonchalantly. Not suspicious.
âOh, why not? Arenât you guys inseparable?â
âShe is at home.â
âAre you sure?â Oh my fucking god. Niall is here. Oh my god, oh my god. What the fuck. Oh my god. No, please. My head hurts and I hold my breath.
âWhat the hell does that mean?â
âI saw her.â He laughs. âShe has blue hair, itâs hard to miss.â
âWell, itâs actually more of a teal green so get your fucking facts straight.â
âAlright. If you do see her, could you, uh, have her call me.â
âOh, go fuck yourself.â I hear Ivyâs boots stomp away and Wrens soft steps behind her. I wait 10 minutes just be be safe before I change and leave the room. I meet Ivy and Wren at the elevator outside the store.
Trying to lift the mood, I buy the jeans and Wren buys the dress she tried on.
We start to walk back to the hotel, past all the drunk people and the show girls taking pictures. We pass a transformer when Wren speaks up.
âDo you still think about him?â
I stare at the ground and barely shrug.
âSometimes,â I say, âbut Iâve said what Iâve set out to say and itâs done. Iâve moved on.â
My head is light but my limbs are heavy. Itâs found to be a challenge to lift my feet off the ground. Arriving in our room, I lay on the bed and just stare out the window at the neon lights, listening to the show Ivy and Wren are watching. Thereâs over 100,000 people that visit the strip a day and somehow, Iâve managed to run into him twice now. Fuck me.
I wake up at 6, the back of my neck itching with intent. I take a cab to the nearest beauty store and buy hair dye.
Wren and Ivy wake up after Iâve stripped my hair of the teal and the new color is setting. I wash it out and they talk about how they wanted to go swimming but now they canât because I just dyed my hair. I tell them we can go to the pool, I just wonât get my hair wet. They blow dry my hair while I sit on the floor eating a blue Popsicle in my bikini.
âThis color is so pretty oh my god.â Ivy says. I glance down and smile at the dry hair she has thrown over my shoulder. We walk down to the pool at 11. Thereâs only about 4 people at the pool besides us. The water is a crystal blue, similar to the color of my hair. A large marble gazebo type structure resides in the middle of the pool, shielding from the sun and the water. A fountain with a gold statue is set in the middle of the gazebo  and steps lead up from the water to the statue. I lay my towel on a chair and carefully tie up my hair before making Ivy apply sunscreen to my back. Wren and Ivy dive in and a sit on the edge with my legs in the water. I donât trust myself to get in. I donât know how deep it is.
âAre you okay?â Ivy asks. They swim to me and hold themselves above water by holding onto my knees.
âFine. Just thinking.â
âAbout?â
âI donât really know, like habits? Ya know, like biting my nails, dying my hair, falling in love with strangers.â
âOh, so itâs about him.â
âHonestly, I kinda knew he didnât like me, but I liked him anyway. Thatâs another bad habit, assuming thereâs good in everyone.â
âWell, fuck him. This is our week and we wonât let him ruin it.â Wren smiles warmly at me then goes under water again. They want to explore the pool on the other side of the bushes so I tell them to go, Iâll just stay here and tan.
I donât need a tan.
I lie on my towel and close my eyes, resting my arm over my face. The sun beating down on me is somewhat comforting. It takes 8 minutes for the sun to reach earth. The sun could have just burned out. It could have exploded, and we have 8 minutes until we find out.
Iâm almost asleep, I feel myself drifting off when arms come around me. I am lifted up and a rough hand covers my mouth so I canât scream. My heart is beating so hard I feel like it might just burst out of my chest. I am held above his head as he carries me through the water and to the gazebo. When reaching the steps, he holds me to his chest with one arm around my waist. When heâs totally out of the water, he lets me go. I slip on the wet marble, falling on my hands and knees. I quickly turn around and look at who brought me here. His bare feet to his hairy legs, his horrible pink, blue and black floral trunks and his tattooed torso. Heâs dripping wet from the water and looks at me with no expression, but then smiles when he sees I recognize him.
âYou dyed your hair! Youâre like an ice princess now,â he says. He knows I canât get my hair wet, maybe thatâs why he brought me over here. Unless I want to risk ruining my hair, Iâm stuck here with him.
âWhat the hell do you want?â My hands make fists at my sides and I stand up straight.
âWhy do you keep blowing me off?â
âWhy didnât you answer your phone for a year?â His smile drops and he stares at me. âYou canât just talk to me when it is convenient for you, especially when itâs a year later.â
âI listened to all your voicemails. More times than I can count.â He changes the subject. I cross my arms and bite my tongue.
âYeah, well you canât count very high so that makes sense.â Once again, my word seem to materialize and he takes a step back.
âIâm sorry, I didnât get your calls, just the voicemails. I, uh, I blocked your number.â He mumbles the last part, rubbing his neck, but I still heard him.
âYou fucking blocked my number?â
âYes! But, it was for a good reason then I forgot to unblock it and by the time I heard the voicemails it had been a while and I thought it would piss you off to finally call back.â
âWhy did you block my number then show up everywhere I go months after I got over you?â
âYouâre over me?â He seems offended, like he never thought this could happen.
âObviously!â
âCould we try again?â It was a simple and innocent question, he wanted to try again. Maybe he wanted to prove he wonât disappoint me again.
âNo! Fuck no! I wish Iâd never met you, you fucking asshole breadstick. Maybe then I could sleep at night. I wouldnât have to walk around knowing I was a stupid and thought a soulless asshole could ever think of me more than someone he could use as an accessory to his bitch attitude. I hate you. I fucking hate you, Niall.â In my fit of yelling at him, tears have fallen down my cheeks and making me feel stupid and weak once again. I canât even yell at him without crying. All Iâve done lately is cry and complain, and that isnât changing now. I run my fingers through my hair, hysterical, and I donât push him away when he hugs me. I keep my arms wrapped around myself, refusing to engage in the hug but letting him hold me when I cry makes me feel better somehow, safe.
âAnger is a secondary emotion.â He mumbles. âYouâre mad at me because I fucked up and hurt you. Which is understandable. I did fuck up and I ruined you and Iâm sorry. Iâm sorry.â
I donât say anything. I want to tell him how stupid he sounds but I stay silent. I have stopped crying and now Iâm just standing with my head on his chest and his arms around me.
âThis is how it always is. By the time I decide I like something, itâs gone.â He takes a step back and holds onto my shoulders. âI process things at a very sluggish rate. I develop feelings and emotions much slower than the people around me.â
Opposites attract.
âItâs okay.â I mumble, taking a step back and crossing my arms again. He runs his hands through his hair and sighs. He knows itâs not alright.
âSeventeen? Are you okay?â Ivy and Wren come into view at the other side of the water.
âWeâre all good, girls. Carry on.â Niall waves at them and they both frown.
âI want you to know that I will swim over there and kick you when the sun donât fucking shine then drown you.â
âGot it.â He smiles at them and I tell them Iâm okay. Iâll yell if I need them. They agree and head back to the other pool. I look back at Niall and frown at him. He sighs and runs his hands through his hair.
âI blocked you when I had a lot going on. I had to confront a lot of things I wasnât comfortable with and I was afraid I would mess something up. Then I saw pictures of you with that guy Luke and I wanted to leave you guys alone. I guess I ended up making things worse. I know I canât take that back or anything but Iâm sorry.â
âWhat was happening?â I cross my ankles, feeling like Iâm crossing a line asking him. He smiles and takes a step forward.
âI realized I really fucking liked you, and I donât like anyone. I tolerate people. I like very few people, really. Iâm just a bit of a hermit when it comes to people. Anyway, I was talking to my mom about you and she said she had to call my grandma because it sounds like Iâm in love. Baby,â he says, bringing up his favorite pet name for me, âI care more about you than I do anyone else, and that terrified me.â
âSorry, asshole, but pretty words canât get you out of this grave. Now fucking get me to my towel without getting my hair wet.â He looks defeated, slouching his shoulders and nodding. He picks me up and pulls me into his shoulders. He walks across the water and I crawl into the ground before he gets out, creating a wave up water to come splashing out. I yell for Ivy and Wren, saying Iâm going to return back to the room. Wren yells back and says theyâll come with me. I wrap my towel around me and grab my phone off the table. Niall grabs my wrist.
âIâm sorry.â
âFuck off.â
We sit on the floor of our hotel room, staring out the window. The sun is beginning to go down and the florescent lights are beginning to color the skyline once again. I didnât feel the need to actually change when we came back from the pool so I have been in my bikini and a white v neck all day.
âWe are so insignificant,â I say.
âItâs kind of beautiful, if you think about it.â
âKinda beautiful, kinda sad.â I run my finger over the glass and stare at the people below us. âNobody knows we are up here. Nobody knows our stories. Nobody knows whatâs happening with us right now.â
âNobody else needs to know, we know. â
We order barbecue wings from Dominos and Wren and Ivy go down to get it when it arrives. Wren wanted to stay with me but I told her I need time alone. Once they leave, I wait a few minutes before grabbing my phone. I slowly scroll through my contacts until I come to his name. I donât call him. I donât want to hear his voice right now. Somehow, texting seems to be the better option.
Everything you said is ricocheting into my bones and it wonât fucking go away.
Can we talk? Meet @ panda tomorrow at 9?
I read his text then turn off my phone. I donât want to see him. Ivy and Wren get back a few minutes later and we continue to watch the sun fall out of the sky and the neon lights seem to overtake the world.
I fall asleep tasting dirt on my teeth.
I wake up before Ivy and Wren, the clock on the wall telling me itâs 8:53. I donât think. I just pull on my black jeans and my shoes. I take the elevator to the lobby and hurry out of the building and down the sidewalk towards the shopping centre.
I walk into Panda Express at 9:15.
Niall is sitting at a table by the window, glancing at his phone constantly. I almost turn around. Save myself from all of this. But I walk to him. I sit in the chair across from him and look at him without a word.
âOh my god. I thought you werenât going to show up.â He smiles.
âI almost didnât.â
âWanna get food? Iâll pay?â
I shake my head and he relaxes in his seat.
âYou told me to come here so we could talk. So talk. If I remember correctly, you are very good at that.â I cross my arms and he takes a breath.
âI need you.â
âYouâve already told me that.â
âI need you because you make me feel less dead. Everything makes sense with you.â
âThis was a waste of time.â
âWait.â He grabs my wrist and the look on his face makes me sit back down. âI screwed up, I admit that. But I just need you to listen to me.â
âFine.â
âOkay. Starting at the beginning. I was at your show. I saw you standing by your tour bus talking to fans and I was going to go over to talk to you but I was afraid of what that might lead to. Youâre the only person that made this whole world feel real to me. I was too comfortable to have you come around and change my whole existence. So I left. I missed your call because I was getting high with some of my friends.â
âWell at least youâre being honest.â I mumble and he frowns.
âLike I said yesterday, I freaked out and when I saw that you were calling again I let it ring then blocked your number until I could figure out what was going on. By the time I unblocked you it was too late. You were angry and getting over me. I didnât want to call so randomly. Then I saw you at the club and the mall. I had to talk to you. Then I heard which hotel you were staying at and that someone saw you at the pool and I had to go see you.â
All this information is making my head hurt.
âI will do anything to make you happy. I donât care what I have to do, youâre my girl and I want us to get through this.â He leans over the table, touching my face.
âAlright. Iâll go with it. But we are just going to start treating each other like acquaintances, okay?â He smiles at my proposition and nods. âIf you make the littlest of a fuck up I will allow Ivy and Wren to murder you.â
âPreach it.â He holds up his hand and I roll my eyes.
âI should get back though. If they find out about this, theyâll kill us both.â He nods in agreement and we agree to part with a smile. Not taking it any farther.
Once Iâm back in the hotel room, I see that Ivy and wren are awake and watching tv.
âWhereâd you go?â
âPanda. When I got there, I realized I wasnât hungry though.â Wren nods and I sit next to her on the bed.
âBecause John was there?â
âHow do you guys know everything?â Ivy shrugs in response and I lie back on the bed. âHe wanted to talk so I let him talk. I agreed to be civil to him. Thatâs it.â
âBeing civil in public leads to being civil between his sheets.â
âI donât think thatâs completely accurate.â
I roll my eyes and return to my room. Ivy and Wren ask me about our 'dateâ. I tell them not to refer to it as such and I turned him down every time he brought up wanting to kiss me. That made them feel better, I think.
Iâm watching TV when he calls. Stupidly, I answer.
âHey.â He seems caught off guard. Like I wasnât suppose to answer.
âHi.â I sit on the floor by the window and stare out at the city.
âI miss you.â
âAlright.â I almost whisper, not wanting to wake my friends.
âCan you just say something that will help me fall asleep?â
âLike what?â
âDo you miss me?â
Oh god, yes.
âI miss your pride, and the way your fingertips left traces of flowers in me. You touched me and I grew. I miss that.â
âYou know, I havenât kissed anyone since I last kissed you.â I rub the spot above my right eyebrow that is beginning to ache as we get into this again.
âI feel like you have told me this.â
âItâs true. You left traces of your lips on my own and I fear that I might wash it away if I try to wash you away and let people crawl inside me and build a home so it seems like I have a warmth inside me.â My stomach flips and I take a breath.
âYouâre tired. You need to sleep.â
âI love you.â
âGoodnight, Niall.â
âBye, baby.â I almost donât hear him before I hang up.
Ivy and Wren wake up before me, leaving the hotel to pick up a 'surpriseâ for me. At least thatâs what the text I woke up to said.
Iâm sitting in the hotel room alone until 2:30 when I decide to wander downstairs and outside. I walk in the blistering sun, my hat shielding my eyes from direct sunlight until I get to the Hard Rock Cafe. I walk up the stairs and to the cafe. I am looking at the signed guitars on the wall when a tap comes to my shoulder.
âUm, are you Seventeen? The singer?â
âYeah.â I smile and she looks at one of the other waitresses and nods.
âWould you mind playing a song for us?â
âOh, I donât have my guitar.â
âWe have one, just go over there and we can bring it out.â
I walk to the corner by the windows and stand next to the little stage they have, set with a chair and a microphone. A tall girl with an accent hands me a black acoustic guitar and I sit in the chair.
âUm, hello. I am Seventeen. Uh, I wrote this song with my friend Luke on the last tour we did and yeah. This is Ghost.â
As soon as I start singing, the room becomes quiet. As soon as Iâm done, everyone claps and I thank them.
They give me my fries for free.
When Iâm back downstairs and walk The Strip again, my phone vibrates in my pocket and I answer it without even looking at the caller ID.
âI see you.â
âYouâre such a fucking freak.â
âCome with me, my darling.â His voice comes from behind me rather than over the phone. I hang up and turn around.
âFine. But only because my friends ditched me.â
âArenât we friends?â
âNo.â
He shrugs and leads me across the street, over a bridge, down stairs, across another street, across another bridge, and through the parking lot of The Luxor.
âSo this is where youâre staying?â
âYep.â
The hotel is a lot larger than it looks. I learned that when I saw that the rooms are only on the walls. while the middle is filled with little buildings. I also got that from having to walk to the opposite corner that we came in through to get to the elevator and then having to walk directly across from the elevator to the other side of the hotel to get to his room.
I sit on his bed while he changes.
âWhere are the guys?â
âThereâs a show they wanted to see. Zumanity, I think itâs called. Itâs the one with all the posters of naked people.â He shrugs. I shrug and glance out his angled window. He has a great view of Mandalay Bay.
Once heâs changed, he tells me to follow him downstairs. I look over the edge, even on the 16th floor, some of the buildings almost reach up to where we are.
In the elevator, we stand across from each other and I have a heart attack while the elevator moves sideways.
âThese get stuck a lot because if they donât move the perfect ratio of down and over they get snagged on the side.â
âShut up.â He laughs and I throw my hat at him.
âAt you really going to waste all your money on that?â
He grins while I fold my arms and frown at him.
âI might just win,â he says. The dealer starts handing out cards to each of the hungry eyes men and John making me roll my eyes.
âGo try to win that car, then come back so you can see me win.â
âShut up.â I walk through several clouds of smoke from cigarettes and flavored hookah in my journey around the hotel. I walk up the escalators and to the second level. Thereâs buildings surrounding me, exhibits and recreations of Egyptian buildings with carvings on the sides. I pass The Chapel and arrive at the food court. Thereâs a LA Subs, McDonaldâs, a chicken place I had never heard of and another burger place I have never seen before. I get in line for some chicken tenders and read over the menu.
She Looks So Perfect starts playing and I smile, grabbing my phone to text Luke. But heâs already calling me.
âHey, howâs Vegas?â
âGood. The Luxor is actually huge.â
âWhy are you at The Luxor?â I bite my tongue and shrug.
âI told myself I was going to ride the elevator to the top of every hotel.â
âThatâs a weird promise to make but alright,â he mumbles, âdid you go to The Hard Rock?â
âI did, they recognized me.â
âReally?â
âYep. Today when Wren and Ivy left me alone in the hotel alone and I wandered around The Strip and had lunch there. I got dragged into playing Ghost for everyone.â
âIntense.â
âHold up,â I take the phone from my ear, ordering my 3 piece chicken tender meal.
âOkay. Iâm back.â I take the buzzer from the guy and sit in a booth while I wait for my food.
âWhat are you doing?â
âGetting food. Thereâs a food court in the hotel.â
âThatâs so cool, what the hell?â
âI know, right?â
âI should stay there when we come over there.â
âWhy would you come here?â
âThe iHeartRadio festival is the day after tomorrow.â
âWow, I totally forgot about that.â When my buzzer starts going crazy, I tell Luke I have to go. I take my white bag of food back to the casino downstairs and to the poker table where John is sitting.
âDid you lose?â
He frowns at me and I start to laugh but he holds up a paper bag.
âWhat is that.â
â5 grand.â
âHow the fuck-â
âI am charming, remember?â He walks past me and I stare at a slot machine.
âHow does that get you $5000?â
He shrugs and continues walking.
I follow quickly behind him, still trying to figure out how he got so much money.
âIâm going to win this car.â He stops walking, staring up at the car on the spinning pedestal.
âAlright. Whatever.â
âYouâre going to help me.â
âI donât know how to play this.â
âPress the button and hope for the best.â He sits me down beside him and inserts a $10 bill into both our machines. I frown.
âI will help you but I wonât enjoy it.â He smiles.
After emotionlessly my pressing the button to stop the spinning over and over, the machine prints out a ticket.
âYou can redeem $20.â
âThanks, baby.â He kisses my cheek and grabs my hand, pulling me with him. Past the exhibits, past the Egyptian statues, and out the front entrance. He doesnât even let me ask where we are going before he opens the door of a cab and motions for me to get in.
âWhat are you doing?â
âNothing.â Itâs almost midnight, so not a lot of cars are driving around, but a shit ton of people are still walking around. We leave the main part of the strip and I frown, wondering where heâs taking me. He pulls my hat down over my eyes, telling me that I canât look until he says so. I feel the car stop and Niall get out then open my door for me. He holds onto my arm, pulling me out of the cab and leading me up steps then down some steps before he sits me on a bench.
âStay.â
I sit still on the bench, deciding to just go with it, and 3 minutes later he is grabbing me again. He holds into my elbow, guiding me to wherever. I hear the bell of an elevator and Niall pulls me inside.
âAre we just at my hotel?â
âNot quite.â
I frown, leaning against the wall. I can feel in my stomach that the elevator is moving but it seems too long. When my ears pop, I turn to where I know John is standing beside me.
âWhere the hell did you take me?â He laughs and I hear the door open again. He pulls off my hat as soon as we step off the elevator, and I look around.
âNo. No, no no no no.â I try to turn around but he grabs my waist, pulling me around to a booth next to the window. He sits across from me and smiles.
âIâm going to pass out.â
âAlright.â I frown at him and he returns a smile.
âIâm afraid of heights.â
âI read that in a magazine.â
âThen why did you bring me here? To manipulate me when Iâm 2 feet away from falling out a 108 story window?â
âI thought we have a romantic dinner next to the stars.â
âYouâre an asshole.â
âIâm sorry.â He stands up, walking to the counter and ordering us food. I glance out the window. Looking at the horizon doesnât let it seem any closer to the ground. Curiosity gets the best of me and I lean over, glancing at the ground below us. I let out a small whimper, sitting up extra straight and away from the window.
âDo you think the stars put us here to punish us?â He asks. I jump, not realizing he was back. âOr, maybe the stars are just stars and donât have anything to do with what fucks up in our lives.â
He doesnât give me a chance to answer.
âIt doesnât matter. Iâm just glad I have you.â
âYou donât have me.â
âWell,â he pulls his sandwich out of its wrapper and glances up at me, âI wouldnât mind if we collided with the sun then.â
âThatâs a bit morbid.â
âI lost everything when I lost you.â He shrugs and takes a bite of his sandwich.
âYouâre being a little bit of a bitch, you know that? Youâre the one that left me. Youâre the one that didnât answer when I called.â
âBecause Iâm a disgusting asshole that romanticized your voice and your voicemails. I didnât want them to stop. I felt like if I answered, you would censor yourself and what came out of your mouth wouldnât be as raw and honest.â
âThatâs not a good enough excuse.â He doesnât answer, rather he just continues eating.
âI was at your show.â
âYou keep saying that, but I donât believe it. Nobody saw you there, you werenât there.â
âYeah, I was. I stood in the back while you performed. Then I almost met you at your tour bus when all the girls had left, but I choked and you were already leaving with that guy.â
âSure.â
âAfter everyone left, the drummer boy picked you up and you laughed when he carried you into the bus. The blond lead singer has a crush on you, you know.â
âI know. Heâs my boyfriend.â
âYeah, sure.â He laughs and wipes of mouth with the back of his wrist. I find it disgusting how gross he eats but I look back at his face. I almost stand up, but he grabs my arm.
âYou donât want to ride the elevator back down alone, do you?â
I stay sitting, watching him eat.
âI wrote a song about you,â he continues. âFantastic.â I take a breath, realizing how bitchy I am being. âSorry. I just feel like Iâm going to pass out.â
âItâs alright.â He shrugs, âWant some.â
He holds his sandwich out to me and I take it.
âI just want to make it better.â
âNothing can really make it better right now.â
He frowns and stares at me while I pick at his sandwich.
âI know that if Luke and I find reasons to hate each other I will crawl back to you. Not now, obviously. But make me feel like Iâm on fire and I like to taste the flames, I guess.â
âThatâs not healthy.â
âNothing about either of us is really all that healthy.â
The next afternoon, Ivy and Wren still arenât back from their night out, I assume they crashed out in some cheap motel instead of coming back here, and when I sit on the bed to watch TV, Niallâs name comes across my phone screen. I answer without hesitation.
âDo you think I look like a furby?â He sounds distressed. Almost fidgety.
âWhat the hell? Yes, yes you do.â
âI just got a DM on Instagram about it. Who has that kind of time on their hands to realise this.â I can hear it in his voice that heâs walking around. I assume heâs alone in his hotel room because thereâs no background noise.
âThey are doing godâs work, man.â I walk into the bathroom and put it on speaker. I wash my face while Niall talks about how he does not look like a furby and itâs insulting that someone would even think such a thing.
âNiall.â
âYeah?â
âYou look like a furby.â
âI know.â
âIâm going to take a shower.â
âWait for me, Iâll join you.â
âShut up.â I hang up on him.
After my shower, Ivy and Wren are back with a box. I sit on the bed and they watch me with grins on their faces.
I pull out a black dress and Iâm not sure what the occasion is but I thank them anyway.
We decide that hanging out in our hotel room watching tv all the time is a waste of our stay here, so we decide to go out on The Strip. I sit on the bed spraying dry shampoo in my hair while they get dressed.
Thereâs a knock on the door, itâs rushed and almost nervous. Wren tells me to get it, so I do. When I open the door, nobody is there. Rather a bouquet of pink roses. I bring it into the room and sit in the middle of the bed, grinning as I smell the flowers. I grab the card thatâs sticking out the middle and read it to myself.
âBaby doll, I finally got a chance to buy you those flowers.â
I know who theyâre to and from as soon as I read the nickname.
âWho are those from?â Ivy sits beside me and I quickly hide the card.
âProbably just a fan.â I shrug and brush it off as if itâs nothing. She smiles, smelling them.
âThey definitely love you.â
âYeah, maybe.â
When we return back to the room after our 2 hour, mile and a half, wondering of The Strip, we return with 2 bottles of Fireball and Viniq. The three of us lay around the room, drinking and drinking.
âSev,â Ivy slurs, âyou are my best friend.â
âOh my god, Ivy. Youâre my best friend too.â Her eyes fill with tears and she holds her hand over her mouth then her heart.
âDude, I love you.â
âBro, I love you too.â
âYou guys should- should get married.â Wren says, falling on the bed.
âYOOOOOO YES!â The three of us stumble out of the hotel room, down to the lobby and into a cab. The driver is annoyed by the time we get out at the little chapel because the three of us were yelling the same line of Chapel Love the whole drive. Ivy treats the driver like a puppy and tells him to stay, pointing a drunken finger at him. He rolls his eyes and turns up his music which is our signal to run inside. The room is small, white chairs set up leading to an alter.
âI wanna get married to my best friend right now.â Ivy slams her hand on the table, bringing the attention of the Elvis and a girl in a pencil skirt to us.
âAlright, come on over.â
After all of the paperwork is signed and in order, Ivy and I stand facing each other next to the man dressed up like Elvis while Wren sits in the front row sobbing.
We say our dramatic âI do"s and our vows sound like "Ivy remember when you had green hair and I told you it looked good? Iâm sorry I lied it didnât look goodâ and âSev, Iâm sorry I smell like salsa so much I just really love salsaâ.
The three of us gather into a group hug, recruiting Elvis to join us.
âElvis, I never really liked your voice but tonight I learned you are a pretty cool guy.â I hug him again and he walks us to the cab.
We have the cab driver take us through a McDonaldâs drive thru to get ice cream cones to celebrate our marriage.
âSev, what are you going to do when whatâs his name proposes?â Ivy asks, gasping at her ice cream.
âIâll be like oh no Iâm married to Ivy and then we can live happily ever after.â
âThatâs so real dude.â
âWe are so real.â
As promised, the Australians are knocking at our door at 10 the next morning. We all have raging headaches and drool all over our faces. I open the door, my eyes still closed and I know itâs them when they yell, engulfing me in a hug.
âHello, hi.â I pat their heads until they let me go when I walk back to the bed and lie down beside Ivy.
âI heard you got married.â
âWhat?â
âYou and Ivy got married?â
âWHAT?â
We both sit up and Ashton digs his phone out of his pocket.
âThereâs a Sugarscape article about it,â he says, âThe Singer/Songwriter got eloped to her best friend, and Actress, Ivy- I have no idea how to pronounce her last name, last night in Las Vegas with their friend, Wren- what is with your friends and weird last names? Itâs been reported that the trio was intoxicated beyond recognition and I doubt any of them will remember it tomorrow.â
âWow. Intense. Well is safe to say we donât remember it.â
They laugh and Wren finally sits up. She looks through her phone for a second.
âOh, that makes sense.â We all gather around her phone and watch the video of Ivy and my drunken vows.
We hang out in our hotel room for a while, then Ashton says he is tired and wants to take a nap and politely refuses when we I offer to kick Ivy off the bed she has to herself.
âWeâll just pay the $30 to check in before 3.â
âI donât want to wait in a line, though.â Ashton rolls his eyes at Michael and frowns.
âFine. Come with me to drop off the bags and Iâll check in. You guys do whatever you want.â They agree, inviting me, Ivy and Wren to come walk around with them.
âI need a shower.â I tell them. They tell me theyâll miss me and we should have dinner together when theyâve settled everything with the hotel. I agree. Then I am alone.
I turn on the first playlist on iTunes Radio before I step into the polished stone tub. A Front Porch Step song plays while I submerge myself in the pink water. The water is hot, but I donât mind it. I lay back and close my eyes, breathing in the cinnamon of the bath bomb.
A slow acoustic guitar sounds through my speakers and I am about to reach for my phone when he starts singing. I sit still, almost frozen. I should change the song. Skip it and pretend I never heard it. But I keep listening. I miss hearing him sing and hearing him laugh. I do miss him. Thereâs a break in his voice and I slump back into the water.
âYou tied up your silver hair and left this town.â
I stare at the ceiling, closing my eyes again. This is the song he was talking about. My body tingles and I donât know if itâs from the scorching water or hearing Niall sing about me. When the song is over, the next song plays. As if nothing happened. Life goes on.
I pull the plug and stand up, grabbing my towel off the rack.
Since everyone left, Iâve found myself being lazy, not really even checking my phone. Theyâve been gone for 4 hours and it took me 2 hours to even get into the bathroom. I have watched several episodes of Glee today, though. I dry my hair off with my towel as I walk into my bedroom, accepting the fact that I am alone.
When I sit on the bed in just my underwear and sheer thigh high socks, my phone starts ringing. Lukeâs contact photo covers my screen, a picture Michael sent to me when they got drunk.
âYes, Luke?â
âIâm bored, are you busy?â
âI mean, I just got out of the bath.â
âCan I come over?â
âWell, if you would like.â I decide to wait until he gets here to ask what happened to our friends.
âOkay, Iâm coming.â He hangs up and I scramble around my room in an attempt to find clothes before he shows up. I find my denim mini skirt halfway under the bed and my t shirt on the armchair by the window. Luke knocks as Iâm tieing up my shirt.
âWe were in the m&m factory and they wandered off without me so Iâve been alone all day and thereâs nothing to do when youâre alone in Vegas.â
âI have been watching TV and bathing, that isnât very fun.â
âBut itâs with you, so Iâll be fine.â
we decide to go out together so I find my shoes and grab my wallet then we can leave. Luke rambles about an idea he had for new song while I press the button for the elevator.
âDo you think itâs a good idea?â
âYeah, I canât wait for the finished product.â
He smiles and I pull him into the elevator with me.
We walk for a while, not stopping to go into any stores. Itâs not as hot today, barely 80 degrees.
âOh, hey. Letâs go in there.â Luke points at a small shop in front of us. Touch Vinyl. My pase is that of a sloth compared to Lukeâs eggerness. I follow him inside and as soon as I open the door a burst of cool air hits me. The front of the store is short aisles full of vinyls and the back is tall shelves filled with books.
I see Luke standing in the farthest right vinyl aisle.
âWhat are you looking at?â I grab the record out his his hands and frown.
âYouâre so in love with yourself.â I set down the Good Girls vinyl and pick up a Vampire Weekend one instead.
âYouâre so in love with Ezra.â
âFuck off.â He giggles and holds up a vinyl to me. Itâs too close for him to be trying to show it to me, so I assume heâs doing something else.
âWhat the hell are you doing?â
âYouâre Elvis.â
âYouâre an idiot.â
He puts it back and stands beside me, browsing the vinyls. I glance up for a second, seeing someone pass us out of the corner of my eye. It turned out to be an employee that walked past us but I got a glimpse of someone else.
âShit.â
âWhat?â Luke looks at me and I look down, positioning my hair to cover my face.
âOkay, donât be mad.â
âWhat did you do?â
âI said you canât be mad.â He sighs and looks at me.
âIâm not mad. You know me, Iâm too oblivious to be mad.â
âOkay, you remember the magazine guy?â
âYeah, what about him?â
âHeâs right over there.â He glances into the corner where Niall and Harry are standing talking.
âWhy would I be mad about that?â I clear my throat quickly and mumble a response.
âWell, funny story, I, um, maybe have told him that youâre my boyfriend.â
âWHAT?â I reach up, covering his mouth and turning him so heâs facing me. His back is now to Niall and Harry and his body is covering me so they canât recognize us if they were to look over here after Lukeâs outburst. I glance around him and see that neither of them seem phased at all and I can breathe a little easier.
âOkay, you need to chill,â I tell Luke. He takes a breath and looks down at me.
âYes, I have reached chill. But Iâm sorry, what? Iâm your boyfriend?â
âI panicked. He was trying to get me to fall into his arms and love him eternally and I didnât want to and he brought you up so I lied and said we are dating.â
âHow long ago was that?â
âUh, like 2 days ago?â
âDo you think he thinks we are still together?â
âIt was 2 days ago, Luke. He kinda didnât believe it in the first place, anyway.â
âWhat? Why not?â
âI donât know? Because heâs possessive and thinks I canât find anyone better than him. He thinks heâs god basically.â
âOh, really? But, baby,â he mumbles, grabbing my hips and pulling me to him, âwe are the king and the queen. There is not God in the world we own.â
âWhat the fuck?â I stare at him. He smiles down at me and I roll my eyes. âI donât like you.â
I hear Niall laugh and I hurry away between two bookshelves. I stand at the end of an aisle, texting Ivy whatâs going on when I hear Luke.
âOh, shit. Sorry.â
âItâs fine, dude.â
My stomach jumps into my throat and I round the corner.
âLuke? Babe?â I call out and meander between the shelves. I pick up a book, flipping it over before deciding I want it.
âYeah? Where are you?â
I reach the end of the aisle Iâm on and almost run into Luke.
âHi.â I smile up at him.
âHey, baby.â He leans down, kissing my nose and I look past him and right at Niall.
âOh, hi.â
âSo, youâve been dating for like 10 minutes now? Whenâs the wedding?â John asks, licking his back teeth.
âSeptember, 17th.â Both Niall and I look at Luke when he says that.
âYeah?â
âYeah, in a meadow outside of Seattle.â
âWow, nothing stops you, huh, Sev?â
âIâm out of control.â
âGotta love her though.â Luke wraps his arm around my shoulders, pulling me closer. âSo, uh, you two know each other?â
âYeah, hung out a few times after you and I met. Before the tour,â I answer, looking at Niall but then glancing up at Luke.
âYep. Only then. This is the first time I have seen her since.â Niall stares right into me and I move farther into Lukeâs chest.
âYeah?â Luke smiles down at me, then looks at Niall who looks beyond annoyed.
âShe ever talk about me?â Luke asks. Something about him is making Niall livid and I donât think his arm around me while he chews gum is really keeping him calm by any means. Luke looks like the best asshole in the room and Niall hates that.
âNo, never. Itâs like you didnât even exist.â Niallâs sour tone goes straight over Lukeâs head. Instead, he chuckles at his comment, resting his chin on top of my head and I can hear his smile when he starts talking again.
âWell, sheâs been the best year and a half of my life, really.â Luke takes the book out of my hands, holding it up with his arm still around me so he can read over the back.
âYear and a half? When you were still into me?â
âI got over you rather quickly. Assholes donât hold much substance in me.â
âOuch,â he sucks his teeth.
âMy baby is such a bookworm,â Luke tells Niall, seeming like he wasnât even present in the conversation, âdonât you wish you had a girl like mine?â
Luke returns his arms around my neck, leaning down to plant a kiss to my cheek. I giggle, leaning into him.
Niall stares at us, frowning.
âYeah.â
âAnyone who treats her like anything less than a queen deserves an execution, French Revolution style, huh?â Luke laughs while I bite my cheek. Niall sucks in a breath and looks away.
âWell, I better get going. Send me an invite to the wedding.â He walks off and starts talking to Harry. I turn around, leaning into Lukeâs chest again. I look up at him and heâs leaning down to look at me, the sight is probably adorable.
âOkay, so he is going to look back over here and we need to seem really in love.â He nods and I blink. âLuke, Iâm going to need you to kiss meâ
âNow?â
âNo, not now. That would be too staged, ya know?â
âYeah, alright.â
âDo it when he looks like heâs about to look over here and the moment seems right.â
âAlright.â
âOkay. Also, remind me to get to the store and buy shampoo and conditioner.â
âAny specific kind?â
âI like the creamy strawberry-â he cuts me off, cupping my jaw and smashing his lips into mine. Itâs hurried at first, but we fall into a zone of comfort.
âNice. Good, alright.â Luke stands up straight and runs his hands through his hair.
âGood?â
âYeah. I enjoyed it, did you?â
âYeah, 100%.â I nod and he looks around the room.
âOkay, yeah. Good. Letâs go.â
I grab his hand and we walk up to the counter. I pay for the book then hurry outside.
âDonât forget conditioner.â
âThanks, Luke. Itâs been 3 minutes, I havenât forgotten yet.â
âTrue, sorry.â
I call a cab, finally allowing us to make it to the grocery store and I make Luke push the cart around while I put stuff in it.
âDo you really need all this dry shampoo?â He picks up one of the bottles and laughs.
âI canât wash my hair a lot or else it will fade to a gross green. Get with it.â
He throws it back in and continues to follow me around the store.
When we get back to my hotel room, he helps me put away all the groceries before we turn on the TV and realise we probably arenât going to be doing much until dinner tonight.
âThanks for pretending to be my boyfriend.â
âThanks for letting me pretend Iâm your boyfriend.â I smile at him and he winks.
We are halfway through an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians when the door opens. Our whole missing group of friends walk in and Ivy sits at the end of the bed, staring at us.
âYeah?â
âWould you care to explain to me why thereâs photos and videos of you and Lucas making out in the middle of a library?â Everyone is sitting around the room, staring at us. I glance at Luke before I reply.
âIt was a record and book store.â
âThatâs not answering my question.â
âHeâs a good kisser I cannot stop that.â
âSeventeen.â
âNiall was there and I told him Luke was my boyfriend and we had to go with it.â
âWell your faces are everywhere and your fans,â she points a shaky finger at Luke, âare going insane about the whole thing.â
âAlright. We will lowkey clear it up.â
âOkay. Good. Letâs get some dinner.â
We all walk down to the lobby, stopping to take some pictures with some fans, then continue outside. A limo is waiting and as soon as we approach it, the valet opens the door for us. Ashton and I are the last to get in. I am squished between Luke and Ashton but I honestly donât mind it. A James Bay song is playing quietly through the speakers while I look out my window, watching the cars a around us.
Cold air blows on my knees and when Luke grabs my hand, I donât feel cold. My heart doesnât jump, rather it settles in my chest and I can easily breathe in the humid air.
Ashton and him talk about something but he keeps his thumb constantly running over the back of my hand. When the car stops, we get out and I laugh when I see that we took a limo to a Dennyâs. Ivy and Ashton get us a table and everyone but Luke and I wait inside with them.
âAshton told me to make a girl fall in love with me I need to make her laugh.â
âThatâs some cute advice.â
âYeah, thereâs just one problem.â
âWhat?â
âIâve made you laugh countless times and all its done is make me fall more in love with you.â
I look at him, thinking of what to say. To accurately bring my feelings towards him together.
âYouâre not in love with me, and it fucking tears me apart every time we do something like this,â he kicks a stray rock from the gravel behind us into the parking lot.
âWho said that?â
âWhat?â
âWho said Iâm not in love with you?â
âAre you?â
I donât answer, so he frowns. But he still leans into me and he still tangles his fingers in my hair. I pull away, pushing my hair behind my ear.
âWhen do you go back to Sydney?â
âNot sure.â He shrugs and I continue staring at my feet. I hear a shutter and I frown looking at Luke.
âDid you take a picture of me?â
âYes.â
âYouâre an idiot, you know that.â
âI know.â He smiles and I lightly push him. We both glance up at the sky and I take a deep breath. The air isnât quite cold yet.
âIt takes 10 years for light from Sirius to get to us,â Luke says, glancing at me.
âWhat?â
âYeah, itâs so far away it takes that long. Most- if not all- of the stars up there are dead or dying.â
âAnd we donât even know.â
âWe are barely aware.â
Michael tells us that we are being seated and I follow him through the doors and to a corner booth. I order mozzarella sticks and a pink lemonade, laughing at Michaelâs jokes. Everything is muted to me for a while. The world moves in fast forward, but I still find myself able to enjoy every minute.
We drop the guys off at their hotel and as soon as we are back at our own, I get a goodnight text from both Luke and John. One is more sarcastic than the other.
The iHeartRadio music festival is today and the guys invite us as Ÿ of their plus one guests. We sit in their dressing room though all of the sound checks and when the performances are about to start, we stand on the side of the stage to watch. When they get on to perform, we cheer louder for them than anyone else. I get struck with a sadness, missing our tour. The beginning of it all. At the beginning, I was head over heels in love with John. I guess beginnings and ends are similar, because that night I find myself walking to Johnâs hotel. I am shaking in the elevator but I ignore it. I want to see him. I want to feel the rush of being with him. The excitement of toying with him. He is my guilty pleasure. I wonât let myself be deprived no matter how bad it is for me.
But people donât change. Situations change. Views change. Personalities donât. A boy with a pretty face and flowers growing in his teeth will spit seeds down your throat and from that will grow roses and lilies and dahlias and hydrangeas that will wrap their roots around your veins. That pretty boy will water them with pretty words whispered into your neck and soft touches when the sun rises. As those flowers grow, they make their way into your rib cage and you feel as though your lungs will collapse and theyâll burst through your skin but they donât. Eventually those flowers will fill you and your fingers and toes will be taken over by irises and each moment is passing by like a highway 70 miles an hour with your windows down.
Those pretty boy will make you feel special. Thatâs his game. He spits beautiful words down every girl he gets his hands on that can make his dead eyes glow.
I walk down the hallway of floor heâs staying on, fixing my hair to cover the tulips I feel running down my spine. Turning the corner, I see them. Theyâre 4 doors down and in plain sight. Sheâs up against the wall and his hands are all over her, her hands in his hair. I hear him call her beautiful and I can taste the cherry blossoms in my teeth begin to wilt. The door behind them opens and I watch curly brown hair walk out. He looks at me and when our eyes meet, it seems to lock me in place. He taps on Niallâs shoulder which earns a fuck off from him. After the third tap, he looks at Harry who points to me. As soon as I start to see him turn to me, I turn around and run.
âSeventeen! Wait!â I hear his heavy steps behind me. I get to the elevator when he is rounding the corner. I keep hitting the button until the doors open and I slide in. I hit the close doors button as Niall gets closer. They cut him off just in time. I hit the lobby button and stand in the comer, too numb to react. When the doors open again, I stumble out and see the doors to the stairs fly open. I run as fast as I can, but his legs are longer.
âStop.â He isnât anywhere near loud, I doubt anyone actually knows whatâs going on right now.
âWhat?â I violently wipe the off my cheeks
âLook at me, baby.â He leans down, holding my face between his hands. His voice is shaking almost as much as his hands. âBaby, please. Iâm sorry, oh my god.â
âThen why do you keep doing it? If youâre so fucking sorry all the time?â
âI donât know. Iâm a fucking asshole and an idiot, but I need you. Youâre my favorite color, baby,â he mumbles, touching my hair, âI honestly think Iâm in love with you.â
âIf youâre so fucking in love then why the hell are you trying to fuck everyone and everything with a pulse?â I scream at him.
âIâm sorry! Okay? I canât say anything else but Iâm sorry and I need you. I need you, Seventeen. Please.â He starts out yelling but he calms down to his inside voice. He keeps pulling me back into him and I keep pushing him away. We are both crying now. Heâs afraid heâs going to lose me and I just watched him spit down a showgirls throat.
âBaby, please.â My arms are tired, and he takes that opportunity to take a step into me, holding my face in his hands. He keeps whispering the same thing over and over again.
âPlease, Iâm sorry. Iâm so fucked up. Iâm sorry.â
He brushes his lips over mine and I close my eyes. My head hurts and it takes all of my strength to push him away again. I donât want this anymore. I donât want this cycle of him hurting me and I try to blame myself for it all. I donât want any more seeds shoved down my throat no matter how good the daisies on the tips of my fingers feel.
âNo.â
âSeventeen-â
âNo. Iâm not going to just keep crawling back to you all the time, okay? I donât deserve to be ignored then cheated just because you think youâre being poetic for never truly settling down. Fuck you. Fuck you. Fuck. You.â
âBaby-â
âStop! Stop calling me baby, and stop touching me! Stop treating me like an old t shirt you donât want to wear anymore then paint me new again whenever you want me. Stop using me.â I push him one last time. Iâm surprised I made it through all of this yelling at him, my voice is shaking and I canât even keep my head straight.
"I know thereâs something wrong with me but baby, please. I love you and Iâm afraid of losing you again. Please, baby, donât leave. I need you.â Niall whispers, this time he doesnât touch me.
âI need to think, Niall. I donât know if I want to let you explain to me why you felt the need to kiss a girl that looks vaguely like me after you spent the last week trying to get me to forgive you for the first time you fucked up.â He stares at me, the bags under his eyes make him look tired and sad. "Iâll see you later, Niall.â
I turn around and walk out of the hotel lobby, trying to keep myself from looking back. I can feel him trailing behind me, but I donât stop until I get into a cab. I look out the window, seeing Niall staring at me. He doesnât move, but I watch him mumbling something. I assume heâs repeating the word fuck over in different variations but I know Iâll never know. I pull out my phone and I block his number, deleting him as a contact. I taste something sour as I take a breath. My head is spinning and Iâm lost for words but now I can say. Iâm over him. Ivy and Wren were right. My mom was right. Everyone was right.
Entering my contacts again, I scroll down. I click on his name and hold my phone to my ear. I cross my arms after I wipe my cheeks and I feel like Iâve traveled back in time. Iâm crying over the same boy a year later.
âHello?â I feel petunias in my throat.
âLuke? I need you.â
Our reactions were delayed. But then again, we were unaware of the timing.
Light from stars take years to make it into our view and if a star was to die tonight, we would still cast our wishes upon it because we are unaware that it has ceased to exist. Stars that were in the sky the night his teeth crashed into mine are not in the sky tonight. They burned out a long time ago and everyone was unaware of its death.
Maybe thatâs what happened with Niall and I. We burned out a long time ago and we didnât know until last September.
âKeep your eyes open.â
âWhy?â I open my eyes.
âTheyâre magnificently beautiful and I just want to stare at them.â
I made a Niall version for all the people who thirst for lil Niquil and i need to stay tru to my thirst
I have a nasty habit of romanticizing anyone who is remotely kind to me in any form, itâs very subtle most of the time. I donât notice when I keep thinking about the boy who checked me out at the grocery store and smiled and called me Miss in our short interaction. My mom said Iâve always been this way; falling in love with strangers. She said I have always had a vivid imagination and gave all my lovers beautiful back stories. The boy at the shoe store said he liked my eyes and despite my obvious knowing that it was just a sales tactic, I talked about him for the next year and a half. I never even learned his last name but I was set in being his wife. Even at 20, living the life most could only dream of, Iâm constantly in love. I fall in love with every new city I visit, every new person I meet, every new shade of lipstick I find and every song I hear on the radio. I love to experience new things and new places; I always have. Thatâs one thing Iâm sure Iâll never going to grow out of. Whenever my mom was asked to describe me in 3 words she would always say happy, hopeless romantic, beautiful.
I donât think of myself as a hopeless romantic, I think thereâs hope. If you have a great outlook and love the little things in life and in people, it will reward you in one way or another. Iâve always made sure to be known as the nice one, be the best version of myself, and now Iâm the girl travelling the world making enough money to be financially stable and do the thing I love with people who I love. Even though I love my job, it calls for me to travel a lot which requires me to spend a lot of time in airports and tour buses. I donât mind it though. I find airports to be oddly romantic and road trips just make me endlessly happy.
So I sit sideways in the wide black chairs with my knees tucked to my chest and my denim jacket as a pillow for resting my head on the back of the chair. My purple backpack sits beside me and my guitar rests in its case against it. Itâs 1am and my plane to Seattle flew into a blizzard in Boston which damaged one of the wings so they have to fix that and send us another plane instead of attempting to fly it to England in technically spring but it seems winter wanted more time for itself. My crew has wandered off; some trying to wake a bit more, most looking for food. My guitarist, Jack, is asleep in the corner not too far away charging his phone beside him. I canât quite fall asleep even though Iâm exhausted beyond definition because one, itâs freezing in this place and two, these chairs are not as comfortable as they seem.
âCold?â I open my eyes and see a blond guy sit down beside me. I sit up and notice 4 other boys sitting down behind us, they all automatically cuddle together and close their eyes, hoping to sleep.
âWell Iâm not wearing much clothing.â He smiles and covers me in a thick black coat. He must have just taken it off because itâs warm and I basically melt at the beautiful feeling. I return to my previous position and close my eyes. âOh god, thank you.â
âYouâre welcome. So why are you all alone at an airport terminal at 1am?â
âIâm not alone, heâs with me.â I point in the direction of Jack and I hear the guy laugh. His laugh has a smooth crescendo and at its peak, he squeals and his voice falls into buttery descent. âOur plane is very delayed. Whatâs your reasoning?â
âWe just like to travel at odd times to avoid being recognized.â This time, I laugh. He smiles at me and covers himself in a blanket.
âYouâre very prepared for this,â I comment and he shrugs.
âIâve done it a lot. Where are you going?â
âSeattle, you?â
âFuck me sideways, Iâm going there too!â My heart stops and I stare at him in disbelief. He has a huge grin on his face and he has turned to face me.
âNo way.â
âNah, weâre going to Paris.â I frown, I was kind of excited for a second there. I close my eyes again. âKeep your eyes open.â
âWhy?â I open my eyes.
âTheyâre magnificently beautiful and I just want to stare at them.â I feel myself turn red as I smile at him. I keep my head resting on the seat and look at him, fluttering my eyelashes. âKeep that up and I might have to switch flights.â
My smile remains and my stomach feel like thereâs a hole burning through me. Itâs a weird but good feeling somehow. His smile is comforting and his eyes are a muted blue color. I have also always had a weak spot for boys with brown hair.
âWhy are you going to Seattle?â
âHome, I was here for work.â I shrug and he nods.
âWell, I donât know if you realized this; but I, too, am a foreigner,â he explains like I didnât notice how rough and jagged and obviously not American the words he speaks are. I nod along, pretending this is new information to me. âI just might happen to live here in England.â
âI live down the street from the airport, so I can just get off the plane and sleep.â He smiles and says he is praying for me to be able to sleep soundly if I ever get home. âWhy are you in Seattle then going to Paris if you live in London though.â
âBusiness trips.â He doesnât seem to want to say anymore about the subject, so I donât pry. I stare at him and think. We could potentially be cute together I mean we both like each otherâs eyes and I like to think blue and brown hair could possibly work together quite nicely. Heâs so fucking cute why did he show up when Iâm such a mess.
He gave me his coat without me even asking what does that even mean.
My phone vibrates against the chair and picking it up I see a text from my drummer, Oliver, asking if I want a drink. I tell him a warm drink preferably from Starbucks because theyâre the only ones I trust with my hot drink needs. When I look back up at the guy, he is just staring at me.
âYou could be taken as very creepy, you know.â
âDo you think Iâm creepy?â He moves over in his seat so heâs closer to me and I close my eyes and pretend to go to sleep instead of answering. âReally?â
âYou seem nice.â I open my eyes, sitting up and trying to not smile at him.
âNice doesnât mean not creepy though.â I look away trying to avoid answering him and I see Oliver walking with drinks in his hands.
âHey, look at that! I gotta go.â I stand up and bring his coat with me and hug Oliver then take my drink back from him. I thank him and he smiles and leans down to press a kiss to my cheek before walking over to John. I sit back down and cover my lap with his coat again.
âSo you have a posse of males then,â he states and I shrug. âYou could be taken as a groupie.â
âYouâre in the same boat as me, asshole.â I sip my drink and he takes a deep breath. âWhat your name, anyway?â
âNiall, yours?â
âI mean some people call me some things and other people call me other things my mom calls me a disappointment.â He laughs and I smile. âIâm kidding, my mom is nice but she did decide naming her daughter Seventeen was a good idea.â
âLike the number, seventeen,â he asks completely serious. I nod and he smiles. âThatâs so fucking groovy!â
âThatâs what makes me so indie.â He smiles and a cough interrupt us. I look over and see my manager standing looking at us.
âI see youâve made a friend,â he comments looking at Niall. âWhere are the others?â
I point in the corner and he whistles to get their attention and wave them over. Everyone gathers together a foot in front of where I was sitting and Aaron stands back and starts to explain what the plan is. I stand beside him and pose every time his voice pauses. Niall erupts laughing and everyone turns to him. He immediately shuts up and looks at me. Aaron continues telling us the plane will arrive in an hour or so and we will have a 3 hour layover at JFK. When he is done, I sit back down beside Niall and cuddle into his jacket.
âWe have another hour together, my love.â I sigh and he sighs with me. We are quiet for a minute, I almost think has fallen asleep and Iâm on the brink of sleep when he speaks.
âHow old are you?â
â20. I keep my eyes closed.
âThank god.â I smile and I can feel him moving closer to me.
âTell me a story,â I say.
âWhat? No, why?â
âPlease, just keep talking.â I can just hear him breathing.
âFine. Uh,â he clears his throat. âSo I was going to this festival with these losers and Harry was driving and I was in the passenger seat because I obvi get superiority-â
âDid you just say obvi?â
âYes, shut up. So we were trying to find a place to park and we ended up at a four way stop and I was on my phone and he took a right onto this four lane street and when I looked up I just saw four lanes of headlights coming for us and I was like this is it; this is my death. And everyone was blind because the cars had their brights on and Harry just swerved onto the side of the road out of the way and I was like this is it this is my life. Then this police officer on a bike was riding towards us yelling obviously trying to act tough because bike cops are the loser cops letâs be real and he was like yo this is a one way street what the hell do you think youâre doing? And I was like what the hell do you think there were no signs for this I could have died and Harry was like sorry we didnât know. So we sat there for a few minutes until the cars stopped coming and he turned around and we were back on track and everything was good again and i was living my life correctly.â Iâm in a fit of laughter by the end of his story and when I laugh too hard, I get hiccups and everything goes downhill from there.
âWhen was this?â I ask through my hiccups.
âLast week.â
âOh my god.â I cover my face with my hands and he continues to laugh. I hiccup again and take a sip of my drink. Niall stares at me and I readjust my seating so my legs are over the armrest and I can freely kick him. His whines turn to giggles fairly quickly though.
âHow old are you then?â I ask and he smiles.
â17.â
âWhat the hell? No youâre not,â I say same glaring at him. He smiles and leans back in his seat.
âYou got me, Iâm 21. Iâm old and I might die next week.â He stretches his arms above his head and smiles at me.
âYou couldnât pull off being younger than me.â
âIt was a joke, you know, because your name is SeventeenâŠ. 17.â I roll my eyes and he pulls a pack of gum out of his pocket. He unwraps a piece and shoves it in his mouth before holding it out to me. I take a piece because well itâs 1am and my breath isnât all that beautiful right now.
He slouches in his seat and stares up at the ceiling, chewing his gum. Something about looking at boysâ profiles to me, I find them to be the best view for some reason. You would think I would prefer to look someone straight on. His jaw intrigues me somehow, and he looks so adorable and I guess you could say innocent. I stare at him, trying to hold myself back from asking the only question on my mind.
I have never been very good at biting my tongue.
âWhat made you want to come have a conversation with me?â
âWell, I saw you sitting here and I was like holy shit she looks so cool so I was like câmon man you can do this the worst she can do is turn you down so I went out on a limb and did it. What Iâve leaned in my many years is that if you want to talk to someone, you canât wait for them to make the first move because, odds are, theyâre waiting for the same thing. I donât really think that was the situation with you though, you wouldnât have even noticed I was here.â
âI might have noticed, when I sat up or something.â He smiles and shrugs.
âI donât know where Iâm gonna be five years, but I hope itâs somewhere with a beautiful view aka you.â
âThat rhymed, Iâm impressed.â
âJust doing my job, baby girl.â
âOh my god.â I face forward and lean against the arm rest separating us. âI take it you like nicknames.â
âYeah, thatâs why Iâm offended you havenât given me one yet.â
âWhatever, Twinkle Toes.â He grins and pinches my cheek. I push his hand away and laugh.
âYou have an adorable laugh, it makes me smile every time. Actually, your smile could have probably ended the Bubonic plague had you lived in the 1400s.â He winks at me and I smack his arm.
Iâve never met someone like him. I doubt ill ever will find someone just like him. Heâs so intriguing, and I canât fully grasp the way i feel when he looks at me with his blue eyes and his lips slightly parted. His confident and somewhat cocky demeanor, yet complete lack of judgement makes me want to open up to him in a heart beat. All i crave is his laugh and his eyes to glisten as he sees me, just the way Iâve always wanted someone to look at me.
I donât realize I had fallen asleep until someone is poking my cheek repeatedly. I open my eyes and blink a few times before the world comes into focus and I see Oliver standing over me. I then realize the situation and Niallâs head is definitely on my shoulder.
âThe plane is boarding.â I sit up and that causes Niall to wake up. He rubs his eyes and looks at me while I stand up.
âYouâre leaving me?â He pouts and I shrug.
âSoz, babes.â
âIâll miss you, my love.â He grabs my hand and sighs dramatically. I smile and and pulls me closer to him. He hugs me while he is still sitting down so his head is on my stomach but then stands up. I had no idea how tall he was. He is around a foot taller than me and standing next to him, the top of my head only reaches a about his collarbones. He hugs me tight, kissing my hair and rocking us side to side. He smells like something spicy and I recognize it to be his cologne. Our embrace is broken up when the loudspeaker announces again that our plane is now boarding. He looks down at me and I take a step back and look up at him.
âBye.â He smiles.
âBye.â
When I was 18, I fell in love with a girl that smelled like cherries and drank smoothies when she was tired. She had a dream of dating the front man of a band and living in a big city. We would hang out at the juice bar downtown after school and she would tell me about her plans. She would graduate and go to community college to get her associates degree and then go off to Seattle and study art. I never got the nerve to tell her some people are artists but I think she is art.
When I was 15, turning 16 the next week, I was wandering around the town looking for a place to have my party. My aunt insisted on throwing me one. I passed the ice cream shop and stood outside the movie theatre and across from the bowling alley, trying to decide which lame party I would prefer. She ran straight into me, knocking me into the postage box behind me. She threw out apologies left and right, asking if I was hurt or needed ice or a doctor. I told her I was fine over and over again, trying to assure her that I am no where near in need of medical assistance. She smiled and I couldnât breathe. My aunt showed up and asking if I had decided and invited the nameless girl to my 16th birthday party. My aunt asked for her number and said she would call her and inform her of the details. The next week, I was sitting in the bowling alley with my aunt and little brother, 15 minutes after the time on the invitations. I had told her to not throw me a party, nobody would show up. But the girl showed up. She was wearing shorts and socks that reached her knees. Her converse were dirty and her red jacket had the logo of my high school on the left side; a C with an angry looking bird on fire. She paid for her own and greeted me with a smile and a quick happy birthday.
âMânames Niall.â
âI know.â She smirked and tied her shoes. I sat beside her and scrunched up my nose.
âThatâs not fair.â She laughed and sat with her foot on the chair so she isnât leaning over anymore.
âYour aunt told me when she was giving me the details, also itâs on the wall.â She points at the Party City streamers my uncle hung up. In shining blue letters is, happy birthday Niall. I frown and she stands up. We had an unspoken competition as to who could get the most points and she brought out the metal thing that kids roll their balls on to get it to go straight. There was only one and she claimed it as her own so I wasnât allowed to use it. She helped my brother with his since he was only 7 and decided he wanted to show off and use a 13 pound ball. I learned her name when we gave her a ride home. She hugged me goodbye and just said a simple, Lux. At the time I was confused but then it sunk it a few days later.
After that Christmas, the semester ended and classes were switched up. We ended up having English class together and she willingly sat next to me. We sat together for the rest of the year. I wrote and she doodled. I told her our assignments at the end of the period and we worked on them at the juice bar after school. She would draw me and I would write about her. That was our perfectly comfortable cycle. Nobody could change our cycle. I fell in love with her during our cycle. I loved the way she would bite her straw when she was doing homework and sipping on a smoothie. She would glance at me, taking notice of my staring, and she would smile.
âDonât look at me, Iâm doing math.â
âWhat does you doing math have to do with me looking at you?â
âBecause I actually have to think during math.â
âYouâre adorable when youâre thinking,â I said. She smiled once again, her pink straw between her teeth, and looked back at her paper. The best part about being friends with Lux is that she never pried into why I lived with my aunt and uncle, I donât even think she ever asked.
Lux took up night classes so by the time we graduated, she Ÿ of the credits she needed to her her associates degree. She was determined to get out of here, taking Econ and Gov online our sophomore year. She didnât care it was a senior level class, she wanted out and she was tackling the hardest classes first.
Her love for Seattle, the indie city that rained more than not, may have swayed my opinion on where I wanted to go to college. I wasnât sure before, she just helped me decide.
3 weeks before graduation, I got a letter in the mail. I called Lux to come over before I even told my family. I sat on my front lawn and waited for her. She rode her bike into the grass, jumping off and falling to her knees in front of me in one movement. At first, I thought she was hurt, but she grinned and help up her own envelope. We opened our letters together on the lawn, giving each other pep talks on how itâs alright if we donât get accepted. I opened mine first. I got accepted to University of Washington and she was accepted to Seattle Pacific University. She hugged me tight and my aunt came out to see her all over me. She invited her to stay for dinner. When summer came to an end, we thought it would be easiest to just get out of the small town in North-West Washington that nobody has ever heard of and it worked. Seattle was only about an hour away with traffic but neither of us could stand another minute in that sad old town. We got a cheap apartment but it felt as if it was the coolest place we have ever lived- could ever live. Lux covered the place in potted plants and kept them alive with every ounce of her. Those plants were an extension of herself. We took the trains to class and had enough space for ourselves. Everything was perfect. I was living in the big city with my best friend, a girl who could actually stand me. I was in love.
For her 19th birthday, I got us tickets to see a new band playing in a small venue down the street. I hadnât ever heard any of their music but a girl in my creative writing class told me about them and said they were really good so thought I might as well give them a chance and Lux loves music. The show was on a Wednesday night and about 30 people were there, all around our age. After they played, the front man was at the table where theyâre selling their merchandise.
âAsk him if I could have a picture.â She stands on her toes and whispers to me.
âWhat? No! Ask yourself.â
âNiall, please.â She frowns and somehow makes her eyes sparkle. I canât resist her and its damn irritating. I made my way to the table and he looked up at me.
âHey, man. Whatâs up?â
âCould I have a CD.â He nodded and grabbed it from under the table. âCould you sign it?â He nodded again and ripped the plastic wrap off then signed the case.
âAnything else?â He asked handing me the disc and I handed him a $5.
âYeah, my friend wants a picture with you.â He looked up for a second then peered around me to see Lux. He smiled and finally stood up straight. He was 4 inches taller than me and when he stepped out from the table, I felt like I was becoming even smaller. He had a presence I lacked and I doubt Iâll ever be able to achieve that. I used my phone to take pictures, the way Lux hugged him made my chest tighten and my throat close. She smiled so big, she looked so happy next to him. I felt like I was going to throw up when he called her babe. After the picture is taken and Lux buys a sweatshirt, we made our way outside.
âThey were so good, thank you so much!â She smiled and hugged me. âThis was so fun.â
âYouâre welcome, Iâm glad you enjoyed it.â She stood on her toes and kisses my cheek. She grabbed my hand and walked in front of me.
âIâm tired, letâs go home and sleep.â
A few days later, I was over Lux and the front man, I wasnât upset over it anymore. After our classes the next Friday, Lux and I met at Juice Bar on the corner of our street. She sat at the table with her ear buds in and reading a book.
âHey,â I said. She looked at me and smiled.
âHii!â She hugged me.
âOkay, so Iâm listening to Undressing The Words,â she started and and I frowned, âand they have this song and itâs literally so good.â
She had me listen to the song and I tried to not be bitter. The following days were just her and that new band. I felt a sense of pride because Iâm the one who introduced them to her. That pride dissipated when I got her text during one of my lectures.
ITS TIME
That just meant she wanted me to meet her at the juice bar by our building. I didnât think anything of it, so after my lecture, I met her there. She was grinning and hugged me as soon as I walked in. She told me she had a story and to get myself ready. I sat on the stool across from her and she couldnât stop giggling. I just smiled, she was so fucking adorable when she was happy.
âSo I was at the store buying dish soap and picture frames,â she started with a deep breath. âI was checking out and he just walked up behind me!â
âWho?â She shushed me and told me to let her finish.
âSebastian! From the band? Anyway he was like are you going to frame the picture of us and he was chewing gum and his teeth are literally so straight it harms me emotionally.â I frowned but continued to listen to her.
âAnd I was like oh yeah and long story short, he asked me on a sort of date tonight like he didnât really say it was a date but friends donât go to dinner and a movie for no reason.â
I mean we do that all the timeÂ
âTrue,â I say.
âAre you alright?â She asked slowly.
âYeah, Iâm just tired. The lecture was long and boring.â I shrugged and she brushed it off. I was just tired, she understood that.
I went home and she said she had to pick up one more thing so we parted ways. I fell asleep on the carpet in the living room and woke up when she sat on my spine.
âI have to show you something.â She stood up and ran out of the room. I sat up and rubbed my eyes.
âLook!â She came out smiling.
âHoly shit,â I mumbled. She spun around and sat in front of me all in one movement. The skirt of her red dress followed slowly behind her every move.
âI bought a dress! I used up all my extra money and it will probably be ratty by the years end, but I donât care. Iâve got a pretty dress!â I smiled and looked at her.
âYouâre a paragon of beauty.â
âAm I? God, I hate living with an English major. What does that even mean?â I shrug and she stands up. She said that she needs to shower and get ready then needs a ride. I agree with no hesitation, she didnât tell me where she needed a ride to.
After she emerged from her room in her new red dress and her black low heels she only wears on special occasions, I put the piece together.
She needed a ride to her fucking date.
When we get in the car, she tells me sheâs meeting him at the cafe across town.
âWhy didnât he pick you up?â I asked.
âHis friend has his car.â
âWhat guy takes a girl to a cafe for their first date?â I took a left turn.
âI think itâs cute and stop being a bitch about it. Itâs not like Iâm marrying him,â She snapped making me frown.
âSorry, Iâm just grouchy. Havenât slept much.â She accepted my weak and total loser apology and crossed her arms. I saw Sebastian sitting on a bench in front of the cafe. He had a black suit on and his hair wasnât sticking up from running his fingers through it too much like it was at the show. Instead, slicked back and he was holding a bouquet of flowers, looking around nervously.
âHe looks like an asshole.â She punched my arm as I stopped the car by the curb in front of him.
âGo home and sleep, alright? I can get myself there.â She got out of the car and shut the door. I watched him stand up and smile at her. He held out the flowers and his smile grew when she says something. She turned around and ran back to me, opening the door.
âTake these home and put them in the vase thatâs under the sink.â She handed me the collection of red roses.
âYou hate red roses. You like pink ones.â
âHe didnât know that, and it was sweet. Get some sleep.â She shut the door and he said something which made her giggle and shake her head when she looked back at me. It started to rain halfway through the drive back to the apartment.
Lux stumbled back into the apartment at 2am.
âNiall,â she whispered crawling into my bed.
âYes?â
âYou were wrong. He isnât an asshole.â
âOh?â
âHe paid for my food and gave me his jacket and we had a really deep talk and he kept complimenting me and when it began to rain he said that I made the sky sad because it will never be as beautiful as me.â I had done all of those things except the sky part, I never said anything that slick. I closed my eyes and tried to ignore the burning in my chest. âHe compared me to the sunset and the sunrise and he was so nice, Niall.â
âThatâs cool. Go to sleep, Petal.â She got up. I took a deep breath and rolled onto my back. A few minutes later, the bed dips down again and she mumbled a good night.
She let me forget about him for a few weeks. We hung out like we used to and I got to ignore the burning in my chest and forget about the pit of sadness resting in me. She didnât talk about him and I made myself forget he was even real. I was doing okay.
When we were at the zoo with my 4 year old sister, Iris, it all came back.
I was carrying Iris on my shoulders and Lux was walking beside us. Iris was telling us about her babysitterâs new puppy when Lux gasped and I just got a glimpse of her running out of the corner of my eye. I wish I didnât look because I just get a front row view of Lux running up to Sebastian and him picking her up with a laugh.
âShe is talking to a giant,â Iris said.
âYouâre taller than him now, did you know that?â She smiled and demanded to go over to them to prove sheâs the tallest giant. I focus on Iris so I didnât have to look at Lux and Sebastian. I set Iris onto the ground and looked at my phone. My head hurt and it felt like there was something stuck in my throat.
The next week she dragged me to another one of their shows. I have to admit, theyâre really good at what they do. Lately, Iâve been full of bitterness and hatred for everything which makes me feel like an asshole so I am projecting that hatred onto myself and I think it has just been radiating off of me because as soon as Sebastian came off stage, he notices.
âYeah. Just a headache.â I shrugged and he nodded looking at Lux.
âDid you like it?â She nodded and hugged him. I looked at them for a second then made a b line for the restrooms. I was hunched over the toilet when Sebastian walked in. I sat down with my head between my knees and tried to breathe.
âNiall? Dude, come here.â He helped me stand up and gave me a water bottle and a piece of gum to wash the taste out of my mouth. âLux is waiting outside for us, come on.â
Since we walked to the venue, we got in Sebastianâs car. A black truck.
âSorry, itâs my dadâs. Heâs letting me use it until I save up enough to get a new one,â He apologized. I lied down on the bench in the backseat and Lix sat up front. He drove to Walmart and dropped Lux off at the front door to grab sprite and saltine crackers. He parked the truck and looked back at me.
âYou alright?â I nodded and sat up. âLux has been worried about you, she always talks about how youâre always so tired and down.â
âSchool is stressful. Lots of big words.â
âI donât think Iâve ever heard you say a full, nowhere near vague, sentence.â He chuckled and I rolled my eyes. âShe talks very highly of you though.â
Lux came out a few minutes later with a bag in hand. She gave me the bag and told me it will make me feel better. The food didnât help me stop hating everything and feeling like the most useless person in the world.
I found it disgusting how much power I had given Lux over me. She stayed completely oblivious to the fact that I was obviously undoubtedly in love with her. She controlled every aspect of my emotions and I donât understand how I got to that. Maybe I had just gotten too comfortable with her. It had just been us for 3 years and 3 years ago I was a loser. She basically grew up with me even though I had own her for all that long. She was there to help me when I was actually getting to know myself. She helped me get through high school and my teenage years, and it felt like I was losing her. If sheâs gone, I had no one else.
I began to find fault in everyone and everything. As time went on, I began to be nastier and nastier. Sebastian and Lux were patient though. The semester was coming to an end and they assumed it was the stress of being in University. For Christmas, Sebastian flew home to Arizona for Christmas with his family and Lux and I went back home. The town somehow got sleepier in the 18 weeks we were away. The snow covered everything in a thin, sticky, sheet. The pink roses Lux planted in our front yard had frozen over and snow covered those as well. Our families even Christmas dinner together, we were never apart.
âSo, howâs Seattle!â My aunt asked us. I shrugged and smiled, filling my mouth with food so I didnât have to talk. âMeet anybody?â
I shook my head but Lux grinned.
âHis name is Sebastian; heâs in a band.â I put down my fork. âHeâs 21 and studying music.â
âExcuse me.â I stood up and exited the room while everyone gushed over her and her boy toy. I finished my dinner in the kitchen.
Iris sat on my lap and we watched Barbieâs Rapunzel on the couch.
âNiall?â
âYeah?â She turned around and stood on my thighs. She looked right at me, her small hands on my shoulders.
âWhy are you sad?â
âOh, baby.â She sat back down and rested her head on my shoulder. âIâll be okay.â
âMommy was sad, too.â I could feel my throat close and I looked at her.
âI promise Iâll be okay, alright?â
âAre you sure?â She stared at me and I nodded. âOkay. Would it help if I have you a kiss?â
âSure,â I smiled and she quickly kissed the center of my forehead. âThank you.â
She smiled and fell asleep halfway through the movie with her head on my chest. Lux walked in a bit later, sitting beside me. She smiled at the sleeping Iris and then at me.
âYou missed dinner,â she said.
âI wasnât that hungry.â She frowned and I think she was about to say something else but stopped herself. She left it at that and excused herself for bed. I put Iris in her twin sized âbig girl bedâ and she mumbled for me to sleep with her so I wasnât sad all by myself.
Lux, Iris and I played in the snow everyday for the rest of our holiday. Being home wasnât the breath of fresh air I had hoped for. I couldnât breath any easier here. I wasnât as thick as the city, but it didnât cure the constant pain in my stomach. I started to think maybe itâs my ribs, but I tell myself I am 19 years old and actually do know where my stomach is. Iris gave me a false sense of happiness when she was giggling and we make a snowman family. I forgot about everything for a while but if I was not constantly busy, my smile faded and the pain came back. I was not exactly sure why my stomach hurt, I only remember this happening once before. But that was 3 years ago and I got past it. When I had to leave, Iris made me promise her that Iâll be alright and I had to seal it with a kiss. I was glad sheâs so young, she still had time to have no worries. It made me feel like a horrible person for making her worry about me. A four year old shouldnât have to worry what will happen if she lets someone be alone when their sad.
Lux and I took the train back into the city and I stared at the window.
âIâm sorry.â
âWhat?â She looks at me.
âIâm sorry Iâve been so sad and distant and vague, I donât k ow whatâs wrong.â She moved closer to me and rested her head on my shoulder.
âItâs fine, donât be sorry. Itâs okay. I think seeing Iris was good for you.â I nodded and rubbed my face. She told me about how Sebastian wanted to hang out and she was really excited.
âCool.â
âAre you going to go?â
âWait, he wanted to hang out with me?â
âYeah, he said him and his friends are going to Camano Island and he invited you. Theyâre going up his uncle house and he invited you to hang out up there.â I stammered but managed an answer eventually.
âAlright.â
A few days later, I found myself in the passenger seat of Sebastianâs truck. Itâs about 90 minutes from Seattle to the island in the snow and his friends were meeting us there.
âSo how long have you and Lux been friends?â
â3 years, what about you? How long have you guys been dating?â
âWe arenât really dating per say,â he looked at me. âI donât know how to ask her. Like I want it to be up to her standards and not like a middle school relationship you know? Like the âoh I like you wanna be my girlfriend?â shit.â I sat back and listened. âCould you help me?â
âIn all the years Iâve known her, Iâve never seen her say yes to a guy asking her out.â He frowned and his shoulders slumped. I started to feel bad about saying that so I try to save myself. âBut they were all losers. She likes music so like sing her a song or something. That is your strong point, correct?â He nodded and thanked me for the help. I meant it when I told him to not mention it. I had a specific hatred for him and it was just one of those situations that I hated him for no obvious reason. I came on this trip because I knew it would make Lux happy. He turned on the radio and mumbled along until we get to the house. There were 2 cars in the driveway and I grabbed my things from the backseat. The house was filled with yelling and laughing and I guess this wonât be so bad. We found 4 guys playing an intense game of air hockey In the basement.
âGuys, this is Niall. Luxâ best friend and roommate.â They greeted me with weird bro hugs and then I caught onto them being drunk. The first night was awkward and I slept on the couch but when we go onto the lake loosened up. It was completely frozen over and we skated around in our sneakers until we thought we are going to die of hypothermia.
âClimate change is real but it just fluctuates at a regular rate. It goes up and then it hits a peak then decreases and goes up again and itâs just a constant process.â The 5 of them stared at me before laughing and joking about how I was the smartest person in the room and they needed a pocket sized me with them at all times. I couldnât help that I state random facts when Iâm uncomfortable.
The weekend getaway helped me respect Sebastian but there was still something stopping me from actually liking him. His friends were cool though. It was nice to have a break from Lux. I may have been in love with her, but Iâve been constantly with her for 3 years and I needed time to get myself sorted out. I needed time to figure out whatâs wrong with me.
As classes started again, they got harder and it was easier for me to be distracted. I always had an essay to write so I never noticed Lux and Sebastian leaving together. I stayed in my room more and it seems like they began to forget about me. It didnât bother me after a while. I got used to it. What did bother me was when I get a call at 11Â pm and all I hear is Iris sobbing.
âIris? Baby, are you okay? Whatâs wrong?â She told me through her hiccups that she heard Aunt Alex and Uncle Jack talking about how I died. I calmly asked to talk to Aunt Alex.
âWhy the fuck did you say I was dead? Do you know what she already worries about? She doesnât need to think her big brother died!â
âI was talking to back and said that I hadnât heard from you in a while and maybe you died, it was a harmless joke!â I walked into the kitchen and roll my shoulders trying to collect myself. Thatâs the conversation that got me to have Iris move in with Lux and I. We put all of her clothes and shoes in my room and kept her toys in a closet off the living room. Since I have a Queen sized bed, she decided she just wanted to sleep with me at night. I was alright with it. On the days Lux and I had class, Sebastian would watch her. She thought Sebastian was so cool and his name kept her in a trance because it was more than two syllables and in her four years, she had never met anyone that that has happened with. I try to pretend I donât hate him for her. She was just so fond of him, I couldnât bring myself to hate him like I did before.
It was still really weird being around Lux and Sebastian. I looked at Lux and I couldnât help but smile, but my limbs would start to hurt and I couldnât breathe. Looking at Sebastian, my whole body bubbled with jealousy. He was tall, he had the straight teeth, the nice hands. He is undoubtedly a genuinely good person and he is in a band. I was just the boy who Lux was friends with that liked writing. He was a 10 and I was a definite 4.
When February came around, the snow melted and the rain poured. Sebastian came over and sought the help of Iris for something and I finished writing a paper in the living room while they hung out in my room quietly giggling and tip toeing around the house.
âNiall? Do we have scissors?â Iris stood in front of me with her hands behind her back. âYes, but have Sebastian grab them. Theyâre in the top drawer of the desk.â She nodded and ran off. A few minutes later the two of them came out of the room.
âIs it alright if she comes with me to the store?â I nodded and he put on his leather jacket and walked out the door leaning down holding her hand.
I finished my paper 10 minutes after they left and I tried to find something to do. I decided to go get some food for the 4 of us since I knew Lux will be home soon and probably Iris and Sebastian.
I left a note on the counter and walk down to the juice bar. I grab us all our preferred smoothies and pick up some food from the Chick Fil A across the street. I carried all the food home, staying under the cover of the stores all the way to the lobby. I had to lean down to press the elevator button and open my front door with my elbow.
âNIALL!â Iris ran and hugged my legs as soon as I walked through the door. The apartment smelled like cookies.
âHey, baby. I need to set this down.â She let go of me and grinned when I walk into the kitchen. There were cookies lying across a cooling rack and she pulled me over to them.
âI made the hearts and Sebastian made the letters.â She smiled and picked up a sugar cookie with a big pink heart on it and handed it to me. âWe made these for you!â
I set all the food into an empty space on the counter and knelt down to look at her.
âThank you so much, I love them.â She smiled and hugged me again.
When Lux got home, Sebastian was on the balcony and she had to take a shower so Iris and I sat in the floor of the living room eating our lunch.
âWhy donât you like Sebastian?â She asked. Her question took me back but I quickly recovered.
âI never said I didnât like him?â
âWell you act like you donât like him, like you donât ever talk to him and you wonât look at him and I think heâs nice and I think youâre nice and shouldnât nice people like each other? Donât people only not like mean people?â She looked up at me and I sighed.
âItâs not that I donât like him, I have been avoiding admitting this, but Iâm jealous of him.â
âItâs not good to be jealous.â
âI know. I donât not like him, I donât like that I donât appreciate him as much as I should. I mean he watches you and heâs nice and he makes Lux happy, so I donât know why I donât like him? So, I think itâs because I like Lux and him and Lux are basically dating.â
âYou shouldnât not like someone because of a girl. Girls arenât that cool, but like grown up girls. Iâm the coolest girl.â I smiled and she began to talk about what she and Sebastian did.
I guess Iâm just selfish and Iâm in love with her and I doubt that will change for a while.
Thereâs something about watching the girl youâre in love with fall in love with someone else. When he buys her white roses on Valentineâs Day and recruits your 4 year old sister to help him ask her out, it burns. It burns in your throat and in your chest and stomach. When she says yes, everything hurts, from your head to your feet. I smiled and congratulated them on finally getting together, we all knew it was inevitable. They were just too perfect for each other.
Thinking about them made me sick, Lux told me to call a doctor, Iâve been sick for too long. I told her Iâm okay, it was just too much candy.
I felt a sense betrayal when they left together at 9Â pm. I felt it in the tips of my fingers and I ran my hands together trying to get rid of it.
It didnât stop raining for a week.
Undressing The Words had a few more shows and Lux, Iris and I went to them all. I paid attention to the lyrics, Lux the actual music, and Iris said she was going to marry Sebastian. The months went by and I just got used to the thought of them. It didnât hurt, or at least I didnât notice it. For Irisâ 5th birthday, it was raining like her birthday made the Gods angry, so we went bowling. Sebastian and all of his bandmates were there. I sat next to Lux and she smiled at me.
âMemories,â she mumbled. She was was smiling so big, I just looked at her.
âMemories,â I agreed. Iris teamed up with Mickey to go against Jackson and Aaron. They let Iris win and Mickey bowled for Iris every time. When the 8 of us sat down to eat pizza, Iris fell asleep with her head on my lap. I guess having a birthday party with a bunch of people 15 years older than you was really tiring.
The spring passed by fast, it was just rai and a lot of concerts. Undressing The Words had their first American Tour, and they were gone for 2 months. They have 2 shows in Seattle, one to kick it off and one to close. I spend my days in my laptop. Iris always asks me to write her stories so I have a folder just for the stories she has requested. I wrote about Lux a lot. I accidentally sent the file wrong file to my creative writing professor and he emailed back asking for the real paper. I was so embarrassed that I just sent the real paper and didnât speak to anyone in that class for a month.
In the beginning of May, he called for me to stay after class. I was in a hurry to get out because Iris was at the neighbors apartment until I get home and I donât want to have Miss Caroline to watch her for too long.
âMr. Horan, do you remember that email you sent me a while back?â I nod and mumble, yes sir. âWell, I read through it and thereâs a writing contest is coming up. Well, not really a contest, you just need to submit your work to the publisher and they will publish the best one. I think yours could very well be published.â I stared at him with wide eyes. The idea that I could be a published author was completely out of my standards I had set for myself. I had never thought I was good enough for that and even much less expected to have my work published.
Nobody questions my actions anymore, nobody says anything when I leave the apartment in the middle of the night. I, myself, donât even notice that I donât speak very much. I say everything in my head so I canât tell that I say about 7 sentences a day. I was calm on the outside but constantly thinking.
I canât look at them. I could feel my flesh ripping from my bones when I saw her. I found myself blaming her more than I blame Sebastian. I couldnât look her because I hate myself for hating her. She didnât do anything to personally offend me; she didnât wake up one day and think wow, I want to destroy Niall in the most vial and disgustingly painful way. I want to ruin him. At least I hoped it didnât happen like that.
The semester ended and we had a 3 month break until classes start again and I had to enroll Iris in kindergarten. We didnât have any plans for the summer, but Sebastian invited us to visit them on tour. We go to the more local shows, Vancouver and Portland, because thatâs all we could afford as traveling goes.
The worst thing is loving someone you know you canât. I only have one piece of advice to everyone, stay away from the ones you love too much. They will break your ribs and rill your lugs with beautiful flowers and it will only hurt when you try to breath.
But maybe surrounding yourself with books isnât healthy either. No matter how many times I read Edgar Allen Poe or Harry Potter, it wasnât going to change the fact that Lux was happy with Sebastian. I immersed myself in literature to block me from the idea that I was a useless boy with nothing to offer her. She liked tattoos and I could never decide on what I wanted to permanently mark myself with, while Sebastian had several and he looked great with them.
I took Iris to the art museum downtown and her favorite part was the T-Rex exhibit that they let kids play on. She sat in the ribs and smiled down at me.
âI love you, Niall.â
âI love you, too. Are you hungry? Do you need lunch?â She nodded and we walked to the juice bar on the corner of our street. She developed a love for their BLTâs because they cut it into triangles for her and she though that was just the coolest thing in the world and I donât see anything wrong with feeding her love.
Lux and Sebastian were in Portland so it was just me and the 5 year old for a few days. Iris was actually quite intelligent for being 5. She understood more, caught onto more things that happen around her. Sheâs caught onto the fact that Lux and Sebastian have been dating for 4 months now, but it feels longer. 4 months isnât even a semester, they hadnât technically gotten credit for their relationship yet. Iris also knew I had a crush on Lux and that any possibility of âusâ was dead and gone.
She doesnât say I love you anymore. She said it makes her feel like sheâs betraying him. I knew that theyâre together, but I donât think giving your friend the reassurance that heâs loved isnât being unfaithful. But, it was her 20th birthday and we were celebrating in London. Sebastianâs band was hired to play at the Leeds Festival for some reason and Iris was at my auntâs house so it was just the three of us in a new and foreign country. Our first few days were spent being jet lagged tourists and our Wednesday night was brought to a club. Sebastian and Lux danced together in the middle of the room and I sat awkwardly 3 feet away from them, sipping some water.
âNiall! Dance with us!â Lux smiled. I stood up from my stool and Sebastian excused himself to the restroom.
âThat blonde girl at the bar is staring at you,â She said. I tried to turn around and look for this blonde girl but Lux grabbed my chin and stare at me.
âDonât you dare look, just keep your eyes on me.â
âWhy?â
âGirls love what they canât have.â We danced for while and when Sebastian returns, I turned around. Lux was right. A blonde girl sat at the bar and winked at me.
âNiallâs got an admirer.â I heard Lux say quietly. âHeâs too shy to talk to her, anyway.â I rolled my eyes and walk straight up to the girl.
âHey,â I said. She glanced at me and smiled.
âHello,â
âIâve come to uh,â Oh, fuck, âbuy you a drink.â
âDarling, you seem really sweet,â she started and I frown. Oh fuck. âBut Iâm not into small talk.â
âWhat?â
âThe thing about English girls is that theyâre just in it for the sex. The horniest fuckers on the planet, I swear to you.â
âAmerican boys are too.â She laughed and stood up. âIâm actually quite cool.â
âSorry, bub. But if youâre trying to make that girl you were dancing with over there jealous, Iâll play along.â She dragged me to the girlâs bathroom and locked the door. She messed up her hair and roughly ran her hand through mine. She bunched her dress up in a weird way and smeared her makeup before applying pink lipstick and handing it to me too.
âThis will make it look like we just sucked the life out of each other, trust me.â I trust her and apply it the best I can. It makes my lips tingle and burn for a second. I asked her what it does and she shrugged. âItâs a lip plumper.â
It definitely worked, because when I exited the bathroom, Lux and Sebastian stared at me.
âWell, fuck me.â Lux laughed. âYou did that, you just did that.â
I shrugged and sat back down on the stool. I switched my water for vodka and every time I took a shot, I gagged. But I keep drinking, I want to forget everything. I donât know how many I drink, but I vaguely recalled Sebastian sort of carrying me outside and into a cab. I remembered mumbling but I donât know what but I clearly remembered Lux talking.
âWhat happened to him?â
Loving Lux came so naturally to me, so maybe that was why it hurts so much knowing I had to stop. She was a habit I couldnât break. She was a drug to me and I was just another fucking junkie. The thing is, they have patches and gum that make you stop smoking; I canât just chew gum and magically not feel anything when I look at her. When people are trying to get off a drug theyâre hooked on, they pick up new habits so they donât go to the drug. I didnât know how I was going to break my addiction.
We went with Sebastian to the festival and Lux wore new overalls she bought and I ended up in jeans and a t-shirt. What do you wear to a music festival? The eight of us, Lux, Me Sebastian and his band, wandered around the grounds. We watched bands perform and Lux and I got the privilege of standing in front of the front row to watch Undressing The Words. Sebastian had a fantastic stage presence-well a great presence in general- but he seems his happiest when heâs on stage. He was making people happy, so he was happy. After their last song, they continued to play while Sebastian looked out at the crowd and smiled.
âOkay, so this the part of the show when I do my best to try and leave yâall on a positive note and give you a little bit of personal experience and my personal advice, okay? So, I woke this morning, like I do everyday, around 1Â oâclock.â He giggled. âAnd, I rolled on out of bed, got myself a little coffee. I have to start the day right, right? Yeah, anyway, we are obviously from America. And in America, thereâs thing called the American Dream: its the dream of complete and eternal happiness, or at least thatâs what I think it should be. In every american movie, thereâs a happy ending. That is the American Dream. So I was drinking my coffee, sitting on my hotel bed, and I see my beautiful girlfriend come out from the bathroom. She was brushing her hair and I love her hair, it always smells like cherries, and she sat beside me and we just watched Spongebob together and a little while later, our friend Niall-who was asleep on the floor-woke up and we all just watched Spongebob and then Fairly Odd Parents and I think thatâs the dream. The dream is being happy with people you love and waking up in the afternoon because you were out until the sun rose and you watched it rise over the buildings from your hotel balcony. So, be happy and once again, âIf youâre feeling dead, youâve got to find a way to be aliveâ, and my way is to be with my loved ones. Try out different ways to make yourself alive, donât let yourself be bitter and sad. Find a way to be alive, fulfill the American Dream.â He stepped away from the microphone and shouted a âTHANK YOU LEEDS FESTIVAL!â Then they all left the stage.
His speech got me thinking, I was probably silent for a good hour, just thinking. I finally got it when we were watching Lorde. Sebastian was aiming that towards me.
The summer ended and Iris is back with us. We moved into a different apartment because our lease was up so we end up two streets over in the real heart of the city. We found a cute little place that will fit 4 of us for the days Sebastian spent with us. Iris got her own room now that she was starting school, she thought sheâs almost a grown up. I told her to never grow up and always stay little and happy. She smiled and kissed my nose then hugged me. I took her to her first day of kindergarten and she hugged my legs, not wanting me to leave her alone.
âIris, if you stay, Sebastian and Lux said they will pick you up and take you to get ice cream and then go to the park.â She instantly agreed, running to the corner where they have paper and water colors. I was grateful that everyone was busy then, I could talk to my professor about the publishing and it could still stay a surprise. When I got to the university, I met him in his office. He gives me all the details and his creaky old voice makes everything sound so morbid. I kept my focus on the painting hanging on the wall behind him, barely paying attention to what he is saying.
ââŠcongratulations, Niall. Theyâre going to publish it.â
My breathing stopped but I stayed collected for the rest of the meeting. As soon as I was outside, I ran. I ran to the bus and then from the bus home. I was going to be published.
I hated the idea of being average, that Iâll never make a difference or have any impact on anyone or anything. I wanted to watch the sunrise on a beach with my friends while we sip on nasty-not worth the $4 a cup we paid- coffee. Instead I was stuck being average and not being able to just live and enjoy my life. I assumed i would end up a high school English teacher and stay hating everyone who walked through my door because I will blame them for my lack of impression on the world. Sure, I was getting published, but that was just a step. People have to like my book. I was terrified of being average but I couldnât escape. I was average and Sebastian wasnât. Sebastian was the one who proposed to Lux and the one Lux agreed to spend her life with. They had been dating officially for 8 months, unofficially a year, and he had done more than I have in 4 years.
âIâm so happy, Ni,â She smiled.
âYou deserve to be happy.â
âYouâre the first person either of us have told. Not even our parents know; neither do his friends.â She told me every detail about how he did it. They were walking around downtown and random people just began to hand her single pink roses. They were strategic and came out of nowhere. They eventually go to the park and he sat in the bench with his guitar. He began playing a song he wrote, apparently beautiful and slow and called Take Me Dancing. She said she fell in love with the title. After the song ended, he set down his guitar and smiled at her.
âSo you like pink roses?â
âTheyâre my favorite.â She was still confused about the roses but didnât question it until in the middle of one of her sentences, he was on one knee.
âLux Nicole Hendrickson, will you please fucking marry me?â That was all it took. From what I had read, this feeling was heartbreak. I didnât necessarily agree with that. Breaking something, like glass, makes it break into smaller pieces. After impact, youâre left with only fragments of what was once whole, I wasnât experiencing my heart being shattered, it was still whole. It wasnât sudden and horrible, I wasnât screaming. It was gradual and it hurt like hell, but the pain came slow enough it didnât bother me much in the outside. I was perfectly collected. What I felt is like the sand from an hourglass falling into the pit my chest. This pile is what makes my heart feel heavy and full, but it was not broken.
Feelings donât go away because you wont let them. You refuel them with memories that just keep recycling over and over again. That was why I couldnât get over Lux, I wouldnât stop remembering the reasons I fell in love with her in the first place. I always remembered my sixteenth birthday party and all those days after school at the juice bar. Those days that she was drawing me and I wrote stories about her. I didnât let go of them, i kept them as the days I fell more in love.
When they tell Iris, her first question is if she can wear a pretty dress.
I was finally 20 and everyone thought I was a single dad with Iris. Her teachers gave me sympathetic smiles when I dropped her off and during parent teacher conferences, Iris would sit on my lap.
âSheâs an adorable little girl. Sheâs very sweet and social.â
âThatâs a surprise.â I lightly pinched Irisâ side and she giggled. âThatâs good through.â
âDoes she have a mother figure?â Her teacher asked slowly, like sheâs afraid I would start to cry or maybe break something.
âMy friend and her fiance are there, yeah.â I looked at the teacher and she nodded.
âIâm sorry, I had to ask.â
âItâs fine.â After conferences, I promised Iris we could walk downtown to the toy store. The store was underground and 3 stories of just toys. It went under the street itâs on and Iris thought it was the coolest thing ever. She picked out a new barbie doll she liked and I spoiled her by buying it. Sebastian came over for dinner since he had a week off from touring and Lux made chicken and rice. The whole dinner conversation was all about the wedding. They were planning for September and Lux was going to go dress shopping next month. We only had 10 months until the wedding, there was so much to plan. We needed her dress, the venue, the date, his clothes, the best man and maid of honor, the music, and the invites. Everything needed to be perfect. I was just kind of numb about the whole thing. I kept my focus on my book most of the time, but sometimes I was sucked into the wedding talk and I contributed just enough that nobody thought I was being rude about everything. I helped Lux look at dresses and venues and Sebastian went back on tour. Lux graduated and I finish up my associates, I wasnât as careful with my high school years as she was so she was 2 years ahead of me. She brought Iris and I with her to get her dress adjusted, neither of us having ever seen it before, we knew we were in for a surprise. Iris sat on my lap and we wait for the curtain to open and for Lux to come out. Iris played a game on my phone and I watch her continuously have to restart because she couldnât figure out how to match them together correctly.
âGuys.â I looked up and my stomach drops. She looks about 6 inches taller because the dress is so long. It had long lace sleeves was tight fitting until her knees and when she turned it revealed that there was no back to it.
âHoly shit, you look amazing.â
âAunt Lux, I think youâre very pretty,â Iris stood up and walked over to her, âbut Sebastian should be marrying me.â Lux smiled and hugged Iris.
Iris fell asleep on the drive home and I just looked at Lux, she hadnât stopped glowing since the announcement of the engagement. Itâs disgustingly cute that their wedding is on the 2 year anniversary of when they met. October 17. The months passed by with just rain and plans for the wedding and more rain, then it was my birthday and even more rain. Iris got me a journal with the help of Lux and made me a cake also with the help of Lux. I was grateful for them both, and even Sebastian. They had done so much to help me and to help Iris and theyâre both so fucking nice and cool and it was annoying. They were obviously perfect and it pissed me off because how could two people be so perfect and be even more perfect together. I bet if you Googled âpower coupleâ, all the results would be about them. The months passed and I was pissed off then as their wedding came up and everyone and their dog came to Seattle to see two people come together, I was content. Me being an asshole wouldnât change a thing. It wouldnât stop the wedding, it would just stop me from being the best man. Iris was the flower girl and Maid of Honor because she called both spots and we wouldnât let a six year old not get what she called dibs on. The wedding would take place in an old brick building which used to be an all girls boarding school but is now just a beautiful building with green vines growing up around it. The sky was predicted to be overcast like it was today and tonight was the night. It was the end of the tour and the night before the most anticipated day of the year. Itâs the night before Lux and Sebastian tie the knot and commit their lives to each other.
After the show, Sebastian took Iris with him to meet the fans while Lux and I sat on the curb outside. It was not raining, but the air was thick, it was going to rain. There was something so lovely about the night, everything is better once the sun is down. Conversations have more meaning, snacks have more adventure, driving is more reckless and free. Showering at 3am has more substance than if it was 3pm. It is more inviting to deep and disturbing thoughts. All you can wonder is, what is keeping them awake? What happened that theyâre leaving with the car? The air felt as if it was getting thicker but it was not from the rain.
Lux sat on the curb and pulled out her lighter. Somewhere in this whole mess, she had taken up smoking.
âIâm in love with you.â She looked at me and removes the cigarette from between her teeth.
âNo, youâre not.â It was more of a command, like if she says it, it wonât be true.
âYes, I am. I know what I feel, I love you selfishly and obviously. I love you in a fucked up unhealthy way. I would just off a bridge if you asked.â Even in the darkness I could see her lip quiver.
âI would never ask you to do that.â I ignored her and continued with my train of thought.
âDonât worry though, Lux. I wonât ruin your wedding or anything like that. I thought, maybe it I say it- you know, Iâll be able to get over you. Itâs not healthy in love like this with a soon to be married woman.â
âNiall, donât-â
âI just had to tell you. Iâm not going to act on it and all that stuff that happens. If you want to revoke my invitation to your wedding, itâs okay. I wonât show up tomorrow and make a scene, I wonât stand up and tell you to run away with me. I just want to get over it and not be so sad when I see you and Sebastian together. Iâll be honest, I would marry him too, given the chance.â She smiles and I looked at the cement. âI think Iâll always be some kind of in love with you. Donât worry about it though, we can just pretend I never was and we will keep living our lives and you will be with Sebastian and Iâll have Iris.â
âYouâre only 21, you still have time if you want to get find someone and married. Iâm sorry I couldnât be that somebody.â I shrugged. It was not her fault. âAnyway, I bet bringing Iris up through elementary school will be a fun experience. All those parent teacher conferences.â She smiles. I could still love her smile.
âOh, I know she will be a hassle, sheâs already set on marrying your fiance and sheâs only 5.â She laughed. âBut, itâs okay. I like Sebastian, Iâve realized heâs cool. For a while I hated him because he had you and I thought you were going to leave and forget about me and Iâll have no friends and all that, but itâs okay. I need to have a career set and Iris settled before I even think about the stress of having a significant other. I wrote a book and itâs getting published, Iâm really excited.â She hugged me and congratulated me on getting published and she kissed my cheek and told me she loved me.
I still loved her, I probably wouldnât stop for a while. But I was okay, I would be okay. I would go to her wedding, I would support her in this huge event in her life. She hadnât stopped talking about the day she would get married since the day that we met. I was glad she was happy. She was happy, so I was happy for her. I was happy she was marrying a guy like Sebastian and I was happy she still wanted to associate with me after I just told her Iâm in love with her.
I wanted her to know that I will always be there. When they were fighting or if they decided things wonât work, I would be there. She was still my best friend and I loved her to death. She was the type of girl that youâre given early on in life so you can never let her die. You will never want to forget any aspect of her, something about her will always be on your mind. Whether it be what her perfume smells like or picking up some groceries and seeing her favorite flavor of gum. She will always be in your memory, I would always remember her as my best friend and the girl I was problematically infatuated with for a while. Her flowers always grew back when they were stepped on, and so would I. I loved her, I was glad she was happy.
Lux and I were basically a work of art, but some works of art deserve tragic endings.

I smile and congratulate them on finally getting together, we all knew it was inevitable. Theyâre just too perfect for each other.
Summary; Niall Horan is an asshole but he is good at what he does. He only appreciates what he finds to be perfect, nothing less, which explains why he is such a great photographer. Whe his father is tired of his shit, Niall is pressured into teaching a photography class at NYU and meets a girl less than perfect that makes his bones ache

A photograph has a deeper meaning than shallow words. It could tell you a story in a minute with silence and clarity while it would take sweaty palms, a scrambled mind, a dry mouth and a hole in your stomach to explain how completely and utterly in love you are with someone.
Iâve always been infatuated with the idea of it- photography. I would never have to speak to express how I feel, I can make people think about what was going on in my mind when I created a masterpiece. The perfect lighting, the perfect centerpiece? Beauty is born. I like beauty. I donât enjoy looking at things that arenât beautiful, I fill my home with beautiful things. I have a beautiful black couch and beautiful photographs hanging on all my walls. I have a beautiful crystal chandler in my foyer and astonishingly beautiful marble floors. My shower is beautiful white marble and glass, my bed? A red and black Egyptian cotton sheet and comforter set. The most beautiful and expensive kind out there. Beauty is just so enticing. It keeps people interested, everyone loves to look at beautiful things. Itâs human nature to be drawn to attractive things, so I donât see why itâs seen as bad to do so. Beauty sells. Beauty made me a millionaire.Â
I guess I donât appreciate what I have? Whatever. My success isnât a blessing from god, itâs my hard work and pure talent. It just helps that Iâm beautiful. My father, the one who steered my success to the top, says that Iâm taking advantage of my talents and gifts.Â
âYou could use your knowledge to help people!â He said. No. Why would I do that?Â
âCâmon, son. Just a semester, itâs extra money for practically doing nothing! They already agreed to you doing it!â So 3 hours and a long talk with my small mother later, I gave in. How could I say no to the 5â0 strongly Irish woman who gave me life? I may be an asshole, but Iâm a huge mamaâs boy. Whenever my parents would fight, I would make sure to help my mom in the kitchen and make her happy even though I detest dishes. I have always preferred her over my father, she was the better parent.Â
âNiall James Horan. You could help a lot of people by doing this! And you need to learn how to interact with actual people without being so mean! I didnât ask for a bitter son!âÂ
She is just amazing at making me feel guilty about things I normally donât feel guilty about.Â
So now I stand in the parking lot of NYU just staring at it. Why did I agree to this? Iâm going to be surrounded with people who arenât beautiful. I wonât have the perfect lighting in some dull lecturing hall. I might as well just sit in the street and wait for a taxi to run me over because that would be a lot less torturous and painful than this.
But alas I start to walk.
My hands start to shake as I carry my stuff inside. Earlier this morning, I received a call. They explained the job to me and asked me to come in today with all my stuff and just go to my class which is in the Visual Arts Building. Third floor, room VA309.Nice.Â
I open the door and look around. My left hand twitches when I see it. Itâs set up like a normal classroom. 2 of 4 walls are huge windows with just cheap white blinds and no curtains. The sunlight seeps in through the cracks and illuminates the room in a way that makes me feel lighter. My stomach fills with butterflies and I pull out my camera and get the perfect angle before capturing the moment and admiring my work then heading to the front of the room where a dark wooden desk sits. The rolling chair is obviously $30 from Target and it just wonât do. I need my $1200 chair imported from Greece, my ass and back donât deserve such poor treatment.Â
âAre you the new teacher?â I look up and almost burst into tears. In the doorway stands an awkward looking woman in bell bottom jeans and a loose shirt with her hair in a bun and thick black glasses on her nose. I resist the urge to say something rude and reluctantly nod. I need more money, I canât get fired on my first day by telling someone how unattractive they are even if it is the truth. I can save the truth for another day.Â
âOkay.â She grins. âStaring today you will have a class at 11:00am sharp, it should end at 12:30 but can run longer. Enjoy, they should arrive any minute.â Shes trying to sound cute, I can tell. Sheâs twirling the hair that fell from her bun as she speaks and bites her lip, if only she knew she wasnât up to my standard.Â
She was right though, because 2 minutes after she leaves, a group of students walk in and sit down. I donât know what to do so I spin around in the ugly uncomfortable chair as I text my curator about a new exhibit. When I look at the time again, itâs 11:05. I stand up and look at the class, thereâs a few people with potential. I can see a few girls whispering to each other and then looking at me as they nod and giggle. I smirk, leaning against the desk. At least some people recognize my beauty.Â
âOkay. Iâm the new photography professor, Mr. Horan.I guess I can answer any questions you have.âÂ
I call on a few people and they ask if Iâm single and if Iâm a virgin which I mean okay does it look like Iâm the type to stay in a faithful committed relationship where we pray to our almighty God to be forgiven of the sin that is being horny? Come on people, use your brains.Â
âAre you that rich photographer?â
âYes, I am. Have you seen my work?â I stand up taller and cross my arms across my chest looking at the girl who spoke.
âNo. My mom hates you.â My eyebrows knit together and I frown. Whatever.
âAlright then, it looks like our time is up! Leave.â

These children donât know shit. Theyâre just uneducated, what they say doesnât affect me one bit. Itâs not my fault people hate me because Iâm better than them.Â
They donât understand photography like I do. They think of it as getting behind a camera and bam there it is. No, I understand that itâs work. Itâs effort. You have to work for a perfect photograph. You have to work for things to be perfect. Perfection doesnât just happen.Â
My apartment is dimly lit as I slip on my leather Saint Laurent shoes and pull a mustard colored scarf off the hook by the door. I lock the door and take the elevator to the lobby. The waterfall that flows between two large slabs of glass in the middle of the room is still flowing gold colored water from the ceiling to the floor despite it being almost 1am.Â
âHello, Mr. Horan.â The manager of the penthouses smiles walking towards me. I have yet to remember his name which, I honestly donât really care. Heâs just here to keep people like me happy and under control. Heâs a small old man with a moustache, probably about 5â6 and around 45 years old. He isnât beautiful.
âGo get my Lamborghini.â He smiles taking my keys, nodding and hurrying off. His loyalty keeps me comfortable. I can rely on him for all of my needs, I admit that I have sent him to the store several times and heâs my go to man when I need 12am tacos from the Taco Bell down the street. I scroll through my email deleting the unimportant messages until I hear the purr of my beautiful car. I wink at my reflection in the sleek black polish of the hood before tipping the manager and getting in the drivers seat.

Beauty is safety. Beauty protects you from basic struggles, any beautiful person could get a steady income, nobody wants to hurt a pretty face. Thereâs always that line that makes everyoneâs hearts go soft, âyouâre too beautiful to be hurt/be sad/blah blah blahâ. If you can create something beautiful, you will get a blanket wrapped around your shoulders to keep you safe from the world. Someone will defend your every move, people will go to endless places to defend what they love.
"Alright, sit down." I clear my throat, "Today is the day you get to present the assignments I gave you last week. I just want to see where youâre all at and I guess go from there. Just know you will have come up here and have to talk about it in an educated manner and I will fucking rip your work apart." I sit at my desk with my new Armenian leather chair and set my notebook on my lap. I hold my pen between my teeth and call up the first person. For the students that seemed like they didnât try at all, a meaning not showing itself in any manner, horrible quality/lighting, bitter attitude ect., I say nothing to them and just tell them to sit down when theyâre done. That happens to be about 3/4 of the class. I like to rip apart the good work so they can improve since they seem to actually want to be successful.Â
âWhatâs the meaning behind this photo?â I ask staring right at her with a dull expression. She wipes her hands on her jeans and takes an obvious deep breath before forming an answer.
âWell, I titled it âFake Friendsâ. So itâs basically friends can and will stab you in the back.â She explains looking at me completely terrified. I set my book on my desk and lean forward.Â
âThatâs good, but photographs should be open ended. That is clearly the meaning- you made your point- but when you see something there should be that feeling of not knowing. The viewer should have no fucking idea what your piece means to you. Let them find their own meaning. And please, never title your word something so â12 year old trying to be coolâ sounding, okay? âFake Friendsâ? Call it âThe Knifeâ or something, please.â
I let them go so I can sort out the opening of a new art museum Uptown. When I finally leave and get to my car a girl from my class walks up to me.Â
âIs this your car?âÂ
âYeah, thatâs why I was just about to get inside it.â She giggles and tilts her head to the side looking like sheâs trying to crack her neck. She could be seen as beautiful, but the way sheâs chewing her gum is bothering me.Â
âSo, do you offer rides?â
âNo, the seats are $10,000 imported leather. Nobody touches these seats.â She laughs again and I just stare at her.Â
âIâm not kidding, the only people who have ever sat their ass in my car is myself and my most trusted employee. So laugh all you want, youâre not getting a ride.â Her lips twitch and she stands up straight and smiles.Â
âWell I better go. See you tomorrow Mr. Horan.â She walks away and I unlock my trunk. I set my things inside and slam it closed.
âSo why drive such an expensive car to a university?â I jump and close my eyes, leaning against my trunk trying to breathe correctly again. What the fuck is with these college girls?Â
I turn and I do see a girl, but she looks older than my students- less interested in me and more so in my car.Â
âI like this car.â I look at my car then her again. Why did I say that? I sounded so stupid. Wait. Why am I worried about what I said to a girl? I hold myself back from sticking my head in the door and slamming it repeatedly and actually look at her. She isnât perfect- it makes me itch. She has a pale skin with freckles that look like someone just splattered them on her carelessly that makes her red hair look even redder and thereâs something about the way her green eyes look framed by the brown eyeliner and that makes my knees shake. What the actual fuck. I should probably see a doctor.Â
âOkay. Alright.â She steps closer to me and looks through the window for a second.Â
âIt suits you.â With that, she just walks away. Do I have any vodka at home?
